Hugh Jackman Looks Towards ‘Batman Begins’ For ‘Wolverine’ Inspiration, Talks Sequels

Hugh Jackman as WolverineAt the moment, you’re likely drooling with anticipation to watch “Iron Man,” “The Incredible Hulk” and “The Dark Knight” over the next few months. Heck, maybe you’ll even go see “Punisher: War Zone.”

But once these thrills have come and gone, what comic book movies will come next? It’s a question we’re all dying to know, and vague promises of “Captain America” and “Thor” movies aren’t cutting it. So instead, we hold out hope for a new take on a familiar hero.

“It feels different,” Hugh Jackman told us recently about “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” which he’s currently shooting with eyes towards a May 2009 release. “But I don’t think its going be night and day.”

After being the breakout character in three blockbuster mutant flicks, Logan will try and set a spin-off blueprint that could eventually yield a “Magneto” movie and more. “We are dealing with a character who is probably one of the darker comic book characters ever created,” Jackman said of the flick, which co-stars Liev Schreiber, Dominic Monaghan and Ryan Reynolds. “The movie has a lot of fun elements, but there are layers of pain and darkness to this character.”

“Tonally, I would put it more in the ‘Batman Begins’ sort of realm,” he said, distancing the flick from past “X-Men” movies. “That’s sort of where we’re headed.”

And if Jackman has his way, “Origins” won’t be the last time we see him wielding adamantium claws. “There are two conditions for me doing any more: One is will anybody want to see it, and the second is: Will I still have the passion for it?” he explained. “I really wanted to do this spin-off movie, because I felt we hadn’t truly found who this character was.”

“Right now,” Jackman added, fueling hope for the fanboys, “I feel like I could do another ten or eleven.”

Fanboys? Fan GIRLS. I’d sit through ten hours of Hugh Jackman as Logan, sulking and beating people up! I’d buy the poster!

  3. Janet Says:

I’m actually not that excited for it because I think when I’m watching it I’m just going to be wondering about the other characters and where they are. It’s hard to judge though since it is still so early.

  4. Morgan Says:

Wolverine was always my favorite character when I was a kid, and I’m a fan of Hugh’s–when he’s on, he’s really on, and he gives Wolverine the treatment he deserves. I’m trying not to get my hopes up too high after the train-wreck that was X-Men 3, but Hugh has a pretty good hold on this one with his role as Producer–not to mention working closely with a very capable Director and cast huge on talent. I’m pretty confident he can resurrect a cripple franchise and put some warmth back in my chestal-region.

Glad to see that the girls are showing love (or at least acknowledgment) to the comic/superhero genre… Even if it’s just admiration for Mr. Jackson.

  6. eric Says:

well knuckle guy is great, but i would like to see a more gore like scenes like the comics!!>)i would like to see more fights with his enemies!!>)

  7. Matt Says:

I’m tentatively optimistic about this, though I’m still scratching my head at the casting of Liev Shrieber as Sabertooth. Like most other superhero films that have to please a wide fanbase, it will either be really good or really bad. And as for where all of the other characters are, if they stick chronologically to the comics none of them should even be born yet. Because of his regeneration, Wolverine is a lot older than he looks, i.e. he fought in the Canadian Army in WWII.

  8. Spider Says:

This is going to be good stuff here I think only because Jackman has portrayed wolverine so well and I was always a fan of Wolverine as well when I was growing up…the only reason I saw xmen was because of him I could give two craps about the others.

  9. yatoy Says:

that will be great to see a solo wolverine movie
.. but why x-men origins? i hope the xmen isnt attached on it… but as wolverine an independent character.
i hope it will be more action packed.. and wolverine should move faster… more agile and wild… savage fighting skills to the fullest.

I’m looking forward to see Gambit in action than Wolverine. They need to shine more light on the other characters in the X-Men universe than just Wolverine. Less Logan and more of the “Ragin Cajun”.

  11. Nelly Jr. Says:

I want to see a Xmen, Origins: Beast. I will deffinately enjoy this movie but there are so many other characters that i’d love to see. Like Magneto, Professor Xavier, Storm, Jubilee…. I mean are they going to make an Origins for all the main characters. Well Last Stand already told the story of Dr.Jean Grey.

  12. Cosmic_Avenger Says:

If the movie turns out as well as I hope it does, then maybe there will be a sequal with Silver Samaria in it.

I was excited abour this movie, but then i heard ryan reynolds was playing Deadpool………possibly best casting ever for a role (forget the talk of him being the flash….crappy character to begin with for a film). With that said, ledger is looking like the best actor to ever take over a role, but that is another story.

just hoping that reynolds is a key character so i may get to see deadpool in more films.

  14. Tony Says:

Wolverine has always been my favorite character when i was a kid. This movie’s going to rock. Other characters i would like to see being made into the x-men origins collection would be: Rogue (w/ Ms. marvel cause that’s how she got her powers of flight n’ strength. fans would know.), Storm (someone taller than hallie with an accent), & Beast but please make him a scientist.

  15. Blanc Says:

IF they ever do the Avengers movie, it should include Wolverine, though I know he wasn’t a part of the original group. It would still be cool.

  16. Jason Says:

Hugh has done a great job, even though he is a bit to tall for my favorite mutant, and I think Ryan Reynolds will be a great Merc with a mouth. I don’t know about the sabretooth choice. I sometimes don’t think any of these producers, casting agents, or directors read the statistic cards or marvel encyclopedia resources that are readily available to the fans. It would be nice for them to show some interest. I like good acting but I would also like to see the characters I love come to life on the big screen. I still haven’t got over a non-mystical powered Juggernaut (he is not a mutant). The films could be just as good, maybe even better, if they stayed true to STAN THE MAN’s original consepts. I hope this movie doesn’t dissapoint like the last X movie did. I have a copy of every comic with Wolverine’s appearance that has ever been printed with the exception of Hulk 180 and 181. I really hope that this movie delivers!

  17. Kimberly Says:

Wolverine has always been one of my favorite comic book characters. I was very pleased with Mr. Jackman’s portrayal of the character. However, Fox is very cheap about making films. That is why the X-Men films were not true to the comics. I feel Mr. Jackman is very passionate about being sure that Wolverine is done so that it will please both fans and non-fans. But Hollywood has a way of corrupting things unless they are given a slap to the hand and told “no I’ll do this picture my way or not at all” A good example being Spiderman. If Sam Raimi hadn’t fought to make the film as realistic and true to the comic as possible, it wouldn’t be the blockbuster it is today.

  18. Dann~Fonda Says:

Wolverine is (to me) the greatest comic book character of all time. You, know, I was reading comments on another site and some jagoff said that Batman was darker than Wolverine….come on, dude! Wolverine:-Killed people he loved(he had to)
    -Lost his memory
    -Scientists almost turned
    him into a soulless killer
-He has to deal with what I call
    “The Rage Within” every $@#~$#$
    day
Batman: -His parents died when he was a
    kid….I can’t think of anything
    else!
I’m pretty sure this movie will deliver something pretty damn good..especially with Hugh Jackam as producer.

  19. Aim Shaurae' Says:

I always loved Wolverine! I did not know Hugh Jackman before he was Wolve, but he did such an incredible job that I am more than willing to watch this new movie more than once at the theatre just like i did the first ones. I am an inspiring performer, and i act and sing just like hugh and would love to work with him someday. He’s my idol and I support anything he does! I LOVE YOU HUGH!!!
