In the Stephenie Meyer novel “Twilight,” many scenes compete for the most romantic moment, but many agree that the winner is when Edward Cullen sits down at a piano and plays a heartfelt song written for his love Bella.
With the film version on its way, an army of fans have been lobbying Meyer and director Catherine Hardwicke on the songs they think should be used as “Bella’s Lullaby.” Now, we finally have an answer – and as life imitates art, it should get Twilighters squealing in anticipation.
“Yes, it does exist in the movie,” Kristen Stewart told me while I was interviewing her and Robert for the article that just went live here, on the topic of “Bella’s Lullaby.” “And cutely enough, Rob is writing it on the piano as we speak.”
For those unaware, Robert Pattinson has a musical background; as such, Hardwicke has asked the 21-year-old to come up with an original composition. “I was doing music before I started acting, so I still have bits and pieces, and I’ve been playing in Portland [during the shoot],” he revealed. “I’ve been trying to write an album for years and years.”
“I told him he should write one, and let’s see if we can make it work, because that would be really cool if it was Rob’s song,” Hardwicke said of the lullaby. “He’s a beautiful musician, a very creative soul, very similar to Edward. He just totally reads the most interesting stuff, and sees the most interesting movies, and is very introspective and diving into his existential self.”
When I interviewed Meyer separately, she was delighted but surprised by the news. “That’s something I didn’t know,” she admitted. “I’ve never heard him play, so it’s kind of hard to say [whether his lullaby will be as I imagined it]. If it worked out right, it would be really cool.”
“He can play piano, so it’ll be great,” Stewart promised. “It’s going to be really good.”
In fairness, however, Hardwicke said she can’t commit to Pattinson’s song until he presents her with the finished product. “Maybe Rob’s song will win the contest,” she cautioned. “Or, maybe another song will.”
Meyer might welcome that scenario, as the author/music lover said she’d always hoped the gig could go to the lead singer for her beloved band, Muse. “Personally, I don’t think anybody could do a better job than Matthew Bellamy, because he is an amazing composer and his instrumental stuff is just the way Edward should play, because its so complicated,” Meyer observed. “It almost sounds like you’d have to have two people playing to get that level of sound. So, that would be my favorite.”
“But,” she added, keeping an open mind, “If Robert could write a lullaby, that would definitely add to some of the mystique of the movie, wouldn’t it?”

Even if it is ‘not as good’ (though i’m sure it will be lol), i think fans will appreaciate ‘Edward’ making it up rather than some other person….

Oh wow yeah…I would actually be really interested to see what Bellamy could do with it. Muse has such hauntingly beautiful songs, I think it would compliment the Lullaby quite a bit!
I’m sure it would be fine with Rob writing it…but wow, I think Bellamy would be really phenominal.

I’d love to hear his perspective about that. I mean, I think that Edward express all his feelings for Bella in that lullaby (from love and devotion to the fact that he doesn’t want but is tempted to kill her) and it would be awsome if he could express that in her own way.

I have always wanted to hear Rob’s music ever since knowing that he has a band, and I think this is the PERFECT opportunity for Rob to show us what he’s got. On top of that it would make this key scene so much more romantic and meaningful, bringing it up to a whole new level!!

OMG! RPattz composing Bella’s lullaby would be fantastic! It makes it so much…sweeter? More sincere and more romantic! I mean c’mon! It’s Edward!!! Sure, it’d be great if Bellamy would compose it but it wouldn’t be the same!

Bellamy would make a better job in my opinion.
Robert may not make a good piece and a crappy one would just kill the whole scene. Robert does not have the trajectory that Mathew has. We shall give Robert a chance to attempt it but i doubt they would use and if they do it would be out of request of fans. I think they should have Bellamy compose it and Robert too but in the scene go with Bellamy’s and also added to the soundtrack or DVD of the movie should be Roberts version.
Pattison’s version should be interesting though, hearing how he feels! Really intersting but he is just the actor and from what little i have seen i doubt that he feels strognly for Kristen so he would be incapable of producing a piece of music so perfect. Rather Mr. Bellamy might do a better job because most of his music goes/fits well with Twilight and rest of books. Mrs.Meyer certainly thinks so.

Oh my god. If Robert actually composed a song for Bella I know that for sure I will cry while watching the movie! The song is one of the most important parts of the movie. I mean the song is for HER, and it would be so awesome if he write it himself.
Either way I know that this will be a tear jerking movie and with Robert’s lullaby it would be even more amazing.

I’d definitely go for Robert. Not just because I’m one of his fans (although I am a bit biased.. haha. Since he’s playing the character, I think it would probably bring out more emotions from him if he would play what he wrote.

Well this would be the perfect bit of news. I have been backing Robert as Edward from day one and now this has come to light he may be our perfect Edward and write the wonderful piece that has all us women/girls melting our hearts when we imagine how wonderful it would sound! I like others have said would like it to be on the soundtrack even if it isn’t chosen to be the lullaby (which would be a real shame)

I think that if Robert wrote it, it would be like Edward himself writing it because for the past few weeks he’s had to think and act and…well not BREATHE exactly but he’s had to become Edward. So I think if he writes a song in ‘Edward-mode’, it will be perfect. No offense to Matt but there’s just no competition with a 108-year-old gorgeous vampire.
