In the Stephenie Meyer novel “Twilight,” many scenes compete for the most romantic moment, but many agree that the winner is when Edward Cullen sits down at a piano and plays a heartfelt song written for his love Bella.
With the film version on its way, an army of fans have been lobbying Meyer and director Catherine Hardwicke on the songs they think should be used as “Bella’s Lullaby.” Now, we finally have an answer – and as life imitates art, it should get Twilighters squealing in anticipation.
“Yes, it does exist in the movie,” Kristen Stewart told me while I was interviewing her and Robert for the article that just went live here, on the topic of “Bella’s Lullaby.” “And cutely enough, Rob is writing it on the piano as we speak.”
For those unaware, Robert Pattinson has a musical background; as such, Hardwicke has asked the 21-year-old to come up with an original composition. “I was doing music before I started acting, so I still have bits and pieces, and I’ve been playing in Portland [during the shoot],” he revealed. “I’ve been trying to write an album for years and years.”
“I told him he should write one, and let’s see if we can make it work, because that would be really cool if it was Rob’s song,” Hardwicke said of the lullaby. “He’s a beautiful musician, a very creative soul, very similar to Edward. He just totally reads the most interesting stuff, and sees the most interesting movies, and is very introspective and diving into his existential self.”
When I interviewed Meyer separately, she was delighted but surprised by the news. “That’s something I didn’t know,” she admitted. “I’ve never heard him play, so it’s kind of hard to say [whether his lullaby will be as I imagined it]. If it worked out right, it would be really cool.”
“He can play piano, so it’ll be great,” Stewart promised. “It’s going to be really good.”
In fairness, however, Hardwicke said she can’t commit to Pattinson’s song until he presents her with the finished product. “Maybe Rob’s song will win the contest,” she cautioned. “Or, maybe another song will.”
Meyer might welcome that scenario, as the author/music lover said she’d always hoped the gig could go to the lead singer for her beloved band, Muse. “Personally, I don’t think anybody could do a better job than Matthew Bellamy, because he is an amazing composer and his instrumental stuff is just the way Edward should play, because its so complicated,” Meyer observed. “It almost sounds like you’d have to have two people playing to get that level of sound. So, that would be my favorite.”
“But,” she added, keeping an open mind, “If Robert could write a lullaby, that would definitely add to some of the mystique of the movie, wouldn’t it?”
Would you like to see Robert sing his original song as the lullaby? Or would you rather have someone like Bellamy writing it? Cast your vote, Twilighters, and don’t forget that the people involved with the film read our boards!

Larry, you need to be promoted or something. You really do.
But anyway, I wouldn’t mind if Muse or Robert wrote it. I love Muse, and they’re extremely talented, and so is Robert. I’d love to see him write the lullaby.
April 22nd, 2008 at 2:42 pm
it would be sooo SWEET if Rob wrote the lullaby…
April 22nd, 2008 at 2:45 pm
I think Robert understands Edwards character and what kind of song he would write for Bella. I have full faith that Robert can pull off Bella’s lullaby. Plus it would just be that much better because “Edward” himself wrote it.
April 22nd, 2008 at 2:46 pm
Comin’ over from the Lexicon.
I think it’d be really cool if Robert wrote the song himself; it would add another special dimension to it all.
April 22nd, 2008 at 2:48 pm
I also wanted to say Larry deserves a raise!!! Seriously, he “gets” us fans! We at TwilightMoms love you!!!!
April 22nd, 2008 at 2:54 pm
Um while I think Rob makes a great Edward, Stephenie wrote the book and had a certain type of song in mind for Bella’s lullaby I think if she thinks Rob’s song is what she had in mind then great but since she is all for Matthew Bellamy I’m for him too
April 22nd, 2008 at 2:55 pm
I’d have to go with Matt Bellamy, his music is so hauntingly beautiful. Of course, I’m sure RPatt’s version could be awesome too, but for a piece of music that is such an integral part of the relationship, it needs to tug at the heartstrings…it would make much more sense to come from the creator whose music inspired Ms. Meyer in the 1st place.
Thank you Larry, your dedication to keeping us crazed (in the most nice way) Twilighters ectastic is inconceivable!
April 22nd, 2008 at 2:56 pm
Larry, great interview - you’ve got us swooning! I thought from the beginning that Robert had the perfect look for Edward. After watching his interviews, I think he has Edward’s sensitivity and compassion as well. It would be great if he wrote and performed the lullaby (although I may not make it through that part of the movie without having a total meltdown)!

Was directed to this by Twilight Lexington
The song I really like that I think should be the lullaby is “lullaby (goodbye my angel” the version by king’s singers - i think billy joel’s voice is too harsh as Edward’s voice is velvet. I just think its a beautiful tune and the lyrics fit in amazingly well with the book:
Goodnight, my angel
Time to close your eyes
And save these questions for another day
I think I know what you’ve been asking me
I think you know what I’ve been trying to say
I promised I would never leave you
And you should always know
Wherever you may go
No matter where you are
I never will be far away
On the other hand, the tune is not very complicated so perhaps Stephanie Meyer’s suggestion would be better
Finally, I also think if Robert Pattinson’s song work you should totally go with it because I think it would just fit so well and have much more sentimental value(which is important sometimes).

Go ROB!! Thats so cool he’s writing one himself. X)
April 22nd, 2008 at 3:01 pm
All I know is that he has to be able to hum it!
April 22nd, 2008 at 3:01 pm
I think it would be really cool if Rob wrote the song! it would make the scene seem more real.
April 22nd, 2008 at 3:03 pm
It’ll Be Great.
I just love how Kristen says it and then Robert repeats it.
I bet he was thinking, “Great! thanks for annoucing that Kristen. I wanted it to be a surprise. AND I AM NOT INSECURE. I just… yeah.”
Haha, just joking. I LOVE HIM!
ROBET NEEDS TO WRITE IT NOW! HE IS PERFECT.
April 22nd, 2008 at 3:03 pm
It would be so amazing if Matthew Bellamy wrote it. He is like my favorite musician of all time and I don’t think anyone else can really compare.
April 22nd, 2008 at 3:05 pm
ROBERT SHOULD DO IT!! lol. Seriously, though, that would be the cherry on the forbidden sundae
April 22nd, 2008 at 3:06 pm
Larry as I said before you’re amazing! Haha. I would love to see if Roberts song was the actual lullaby. That would make it even more meaningful
April 22nd, 2008 at 3:06 pm
I’d love to see Robert play his OWN lullaby!
April 22nd, 2008 at 3:11 pm
I’m just glad they are doing the lullaby xD. Can’t wait to hear it!!
April 22nd, 2008 at 3:15 pm
ROBERT!!
CAN I GET A HOOO- HA Twilight Tuesday!?!?!?!?
seriously this is the best idea Larry!
April 22nd, 2008 at 3:15 pm
that would be so hot if he wrote bella’s lullaby. he’s so cute
April 22nd, 2008 at 3:16 pm
It would be really cool if Rob could come up with a song that worked, but so far my fav for Bella’s Lullaby is called “River Flows In You” by a phenomenal pianist named Yiruma. This song moves me like nothing I’ve ever heard before!
April 22nd, 2008 at 3:17 pm
Aw.. Robert writing ‘Bella’s Lullaby.. that’s more I even ever dreamed about!
It would be more than wonderful..
Nothing against that Muse-singer, I’m sure he would do that job also well, but Robert absolutely IS Edward!
‘Bella’s Lullaby’ by him would make the whole thing complete
Go Robert!
April 22nd, 2008 at 3:22 pm
I would prefer that it was Robert Pattinson to write the song for the film. it would be fantastic!
April 22nd, 2008 at 3:22 pm
Awww, that’s adorable! I heard rumors that the lullaby wouldn’t be in there (or at least the part where he plays it for her), and now I’m happy. Well, I love Muse and I love Rob (I love Rob more, though, but it’s close), so either one works for me. Jeebus, singing it? *faints* Best of luck to him! I haven’t actually heard too many songs that people want for the lullaby, but I have heard songs people just want in the films. But I’d prefer it to be original, like made for the film.
Gawd, why did my brother have to move from Tennessee?! If he still lived there, I’d force him to drive me to Nashville to watch Rob play. Someone should bug him to come to Indiana. Namely the Indianapolis area. I can show him around our homey little cornfield of a state.
April 22nd, 2008 at 3:22 pm
I TOTALLY think Robert should write Bella’s lullaby!!!! Out of all the composers who could do it, who better than someone who understands Edward’s character?! He would do an amazing job.
April 22nd, 2008 at 3:24 pm
Haha - “It’ll be GREAT! It’s just gonna be so GREAT!”
April 22nd, 2008 at 3:24 pm
Yes, Robert should do it! It would show so much how he has transformed into Edward as a character.
April 22nd, 2008 at 3:25 pm
He Should TOTALLY write it, it would be AWESOME to have Rob play it!!!
April 22nd, 2008 at 3:25 pm
I think it would be so neat if Robert’s composition was the one that was used for the Lullaby in the film. I would love that. But I love Muse too. I am sure that whatever direction they decide to go with, will be what is best for the movie. I am just crossing my fingers for Robert, that he is able to compose the Perfect lullaby. And can I say that I am just completely ecstatic to know that they are keeping that scene in the movie. Thank you Summit. And a big thank you to Larry. You rock man!
April 22nd, 2008 at 3:29 pm
AHH im so excited that hes writing the lullaby and that its going to b in the movie!!
April 22nd, 2008 at 3:29 pm
Robert should do it!! He seems to have such a good grasp on Edwards character so I think he would really do it justice..
April 22nd, 2008 at 3:31 pm
First they put together the perfect cast, and now this?! I’m starting to wonder if the director/ people in charge are secretly trying to make us all implode from Twilight happiness. So yea.. it would be absolutely amazing if Rob wrote the song!
April 22nd, 2008 at 3:32 pm
Rob all the way!
April 22nd, 2008 at 3:32 pm
i want to hear rob’s version!
April 22nd, 2008 at 3:39 pm
It would DEFINITELY be a wonderful idea if Rob composes Bella’s Lullaby. Actually, I’ve never heard him play before. Has he EVER played enough that people over here have heard something of his? hmmm…
But, it would make the movie seems even more sweet and genuine if the guy who’s playing Edward actually makes up the song. WOOT!
April 22nd, 2008 at 3:41 pm
i dunno. i never really liked Muse, so i’d prefer it if Rob worte the lullaby (: after all, it would make it more ~romantic, right? haha.
April 22nd, 2008 at 3:43 pm
omgosh robert should totally write the lullaby- it would make the movie seem even more real (real meaning it adheres to the book).
April 22nd, 2008 at 3:44 pm
It would be awesome if Rob wrote it, he is Edward
April 22nd, 2008 at 3:44 pm
I would rather have Robert Pattinson write the lullaby.
April 22nd, 2008 at 3:44 pm
I think we should hear Robert’s song and here the alternatives, and then let the fans vote! Because we will be the ones who will listen to it over and over and over again! But it would be really cool to have the lullaby be a song that “Edward” wrote make it seem more real, you know?
April 22nd, 2008 at 3:46 pm
I love it. If Rob was able to write a song I think ti would be great and more meaningful when he plays it in the movie, but if he’s too busy or they decide to go another way that’s cool too. I’m just excited that the lullaby is going to be in the movie and that Rob can play the piano. I can’t wait.
I love how Kristen has a lot of confidence in him and is obviously impressed with his talent and has faith that he would do a good job. They both seem very humble about their own talents and very encouraging of each other. Thanks for this wonderful interview Larry. We were all wondering about this. I can’t wait to see what happens with the music.
April 22nd, 2008 at 3:50 pm
Okay at first hearing that Rob might i was like o that would be cool but then Matthew Bellamy is AMAZING and that would be really cool if Matt wrote it and MAYBE Rob played it idk!
April 22nd, 2008 at 3:50 pm
I think Matthew would do a good job writing Bella’s lullaby, but I would LOVE it if Robert’s song made it into the Twilight movie =]
April 22nd, 2008 at 3:51 pm
That would be so awesome!! That would make me swoon even further if that’s possible. haha.
April 22nd, 2008 at 3:51 pm
I would love to have Rob write the lullaby because it would add even more magic to the movie knowing that Bella’s lullaby was written by him. It would be more special if Rob wrote it specially for Twilight!!!
April 22nd, 2008 at 3:52 pm
seriously I live for Twilight Tuesday!
larry I love you…you are my 2nd choice for future husbands 1st place goes to Rob of course Lol oh and I would absofreakinlutley flip if Robert did the Lullabye!
April 22nd, 2008 at 3:53 pm
rob should right the song. no contest there.
April 22nd, 2008 at 3:57 pm
YAY! this made my day. I love how Kristen basically says, “oh I announced it so now you have to do it!” HAHAHA I love you RPATTZ! Plus hi Terra!
April 22nd, 2008 at 4:00 pm
Matthew Bellamy is a genius! I vote for Muse!
April 22nd, 2008 at 4:00 pm
I think Rob should!
I had already know he played the piano. I LOVE TUESDAYS!!!
It would be sooo much cooler if Rob wrote it, because he is Edward, and of course Edward wrote it for Bella.
