Brendan Fraser On The ‘Superman’ Movie That Never Was

Brendan FraserAs much as we love reporting on the superhero films that are in development, we go nearly as crazy as the ones that never will be. For instance, how would you have liked A “Superman” flick directed by Brett Ratner and starring…wait for it…Brendan Fraser.

When I spoke with Fraser over the weekend at the NY Comic Con, he revealed all. “I wore the suit,” he admitted about his screen test for Ratner. “They were so top secret about it. Somewhere probably in a vault is my screen test.”

And apparently he nailed it in Ratner’s eyes because he says he had the part. “First they offered it to me. Then they didn’t offer it to me,” he laughed. “Then a huge swath of guys came in to put the suit on. We acted scenes as Clark Kent and [Superman].” (Watch video and more after the jump)

Fraser said the script at the time was the one by “Lost” creator J.J. Abrams and described it as ” really really really cool.” So in the end did he really want to join the ranks of George Reeves and Christopher Reeve? “Oh yeah. Everybody did. Everybody in town was up for this,” he said.

Watch him recall it all below.

So did they make the right choice? Would you have preferred to see Fraser over newcomer Brandon Routh? Make the call below.

You can skip to the end and leave a response.

Hmm, I really don’t think I could see him playing superman.I love Brendan but I like the guy they picked, Brandon Routh.

  2. vaterite Says:

I love Brenden Frasier as well, he was awesome in Looney Tunes. But can you imagine a superman movie that played like the Mummy? *shudder*

  3. maz Says:

I can’t play this video. It says it is inaccessible. Help!!!!

  4. Dan Says:

Brendan Fraser is a good actor. He is absolutely right when he said that they did what they always do with the role of Superman. They pick an unknown actor. This is the right choice. Pick an unknown with great acting ability to play the role of Superman. Brandon Routh is absolutely the right guy to play the role of Superman.

  5. xanzder Says:

brandon routh was amzing, fraiser would have been horrible he is too goffy for even bumbling clark kent, so i think he has the body for superman but not the caapacity to play him

  6. Egg Salad Says:

Read the JJ Abrams sqript…it’s awful.

  7. Archangel Says:

Brandon Routh was nothing more than a boring cardboard imitation of someone who trying to play Superman for Halloween and eye candy for Singer. HE WAS THE WORST SUPERMAN YET!!

  8. Whoopie Cushion Dough Boy Says:

The biggest problem I saw for the new Supes was the choice of an unknwon who was youthful. Brendan Fraiser might have been as unlikely as Nic Cage, but in the Marvel camp the majority of their actors bringing the superheroes to life are older and more experienced. They have had a number of films under their belt or have been theatrically trained. Routh was a soap hunk farmboy with little or no experience. Chris Reeve came from the theatre and had character driven experience. Anyone at DC reading these comments *hint, hint*

  9. Kelly Says:

Fraser as Superman would have been so awesome! He has such the perfect look and build. Routh was a frail stick figure and a stiff actor. He was such a disappointment.

  10. maz Says:

Brendan Fraser would have been good as Superman. He’s an experienced actor and would have been able to play Clark Kent too (since he doesn’t mind playing a geeky character).
CAN SOMEBODY PLEASE TELL ME WHY I CAN’T ACCESS THE VIDEO!!!!!!????? Is it because I’m in England?

  11. Rick Says:

Routh was terrific in a good film that was just to long. That and the kid thing I could do without. Fraser maybe ten years ago had “the look.”

  12. Tom Says:

I don’t know what was worse - Routh, or the snorefest that was Superman Returns. Nobody could have saved that abortion of a film, especially a dull, lifeless actor. Routh was awful. No spark, no charisma. I hope he never dons the Superman costume again. There’s got to be better actors out there who also have a charming, Superman-ish vibe Has to be. I don’t think Fraser particularly looks the part, but at least he’s a halfway decent actor. This isn’t rocket science peeps.

  13. Ben Says:

i really like Brandon Routh cuz he look of alote like christopher reeve but i can,t picture Brendan Fraser play by superman and clark kent and he dosen,t look of alote like christopher reeve

  14. Angela Says:

Routh is only qualified to do the tv biopic of Christopher Reeve. Leave the movies to actors with charisma, depth and imposing body like Brendan Fraser.

  15. Tobey Says:

Routh has charm and innocence that he shares with his comic-book counterpart. Routh looks like the sweet kind of friendly guy that was part of Clark’s essence. He looked like a perfect incarnation of Superman when he donned the suit. Brendan Fraser is an okay actor, but Routh was much more like Superman.

  16. Get real Says:

Routh was a stick-thin weak Unsuperman. Fraser could snap girly Routh in half with his pinky.

  17. Get real Says:

Routh was a stick-thin weak Unsuperman. Fraser could snap girly Routh in two with his pinky.

  18. Lalo Says:

Brendar Fraser as superman in a Lost-esque film? It would have been awesome.

I would be better than “Stalker Superman”, don’t get me wrong, Brandon is cool. But the “superman Returns” movie was boring as hell.
