‘Star Wars’ Live-Action Show To Reveal Galaxy’s ‘Greasy, Seamy Underbelly’

Hayden Christensen in 'Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith' If you thought the cantina in Mos Eisley was a “wretched hive of scum and villainy,” well you’d better be cautious because an upcoming journey back to the “Star Wars” universe is going to reveal the “greasy, seamy underbelly of ‘Star Wars.’”

That’s what Steve Sansweet, Lucasfilm’s Director of Fan Relations, revealed to MTV News at New York’s Comic Con yesterday about the much anticipated live-action “Star Wars” TV show in development. Confirming that the show will “involve some characters we know” along with new creations, Sansweet said the show would be “of epic scale.”

As for how Lucas and company are going to approach such a massive undertaking he said “it will take advantage of everything George has learned about digital.” I guess that means it will at least look a little better than that that “Star Wars Holiday Special.”

Sansweet said the initial writers of the show have been selected and “they’ve had their first couple sessions working with George and [producer] Rick [McCallum].” So when can we expect all of this? “We’ll see it in production probably sometime in 2009. Hopefully the series will be on by 2010,” said Sansweet.

A “Star Wars” series that’s “greasy” and “seamy?” I guess that means there won’t be too many Ewoks dancing around. How does that sit with you, fellow “Stars Wars” fans?

Wow, is all I can say. Star Wars and live-action in the same sentence? I love this, but I wonder if any of the cast will be returning for cameos. Will this be merely based on the lower sections of Coruscant or Mos Eisley's spaceport? Will there be other worlds to see and all the "hives of scum and villany"?

I, for one, am looking forward to this. After the Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones, I had just about turned my back on this franchise. However, with the arrival of Revenge of the Sith, I was back in the fold. With the exception of a few clunker scenes (Vader screaming "Nooooooooo1" upon learning of Padme's death) I thought the film brought us back to what Star Wars was like in 1977.
Lets also remember that this franchise has always been at its best when the episodes where helmed by different directors (ie. Kirshner, Marquand). George knows how his galaxy operates, and is at his best when he leaves the directing to more capable hands. I think it's a genius move to bring in new blood for this project.
Take a look at the run of the SciFi Channel's Battlestar Galactica. The original series was unbelieveably campy, whereas the new series could also be described as "gritty and greasy."
I will definitely be there, in front of my flatscreen when this series debuts.

Plus, maybe we'll get a spinoff... "Jar Jar and Squiggy" anyone?

I cant wait for this...Hopefully the show will avoid the big names and focus on the secondary characters....starwars has a lot of potential for storylines that could last for yrs

"Greasy, seamy underbelly," should we assume much of hte arc will be carried by Bobba Fett? He seems to be the best bridge for the twenty years between the trilogies. He can also be played by anyone, assuming he stays in the helmet. Maybe we will also find out exactly why Darth Vader singled him out, admonishing, "No disintegrations."

A few things to know about this project. It will have NO Primary SW characters. Sorry Allie, no Obi-Wan (and I'm sure Ewan has a ten foot pole ready for this one anyway). Also, Lucas will be writing the majority of the first few episodes (perhaps the first season). Translation: There will be horrible dialogue in the first few episodes (perhaps the first season). The show sounds great in theory, with the success of Battlestar Galactica. But, be careful of what you expect from this live action show. It was hard enough to stomache the dialogue in the prequels...imagine 100 episodes of it. See Steve K's comments above.

I for one, love the ideal of live action star wars, would rather have the third trilogy made, but I would settle for this, I think with the release of the clone wars, there would be many story lines to explore such as how many jedi survived order 66 and how they played a role leading up to "a new hope", or what happened to ankin's padwan, and the hunt for obi wan by darth vader, with the digital age any one can sound like james earl jones. even do the prequal thing with han solo and how he chewie met up. Even with the possible klunkness of what the first season was for battlestar, how much worse can star wars be? I've loved all 6 movies and yes I can pick them apart but I will always be a true fan. If most of you remember back in the late 80s we already knew about how vader cam to be and pretty much the plot of ep3, but we still went and saw it any how, or how many of you read the orginal scrips of "luke starkiller" when uncle owen was written as luke father or the script where luke had 11 brothers, I can see this develope into something great, we as fans just have to stand behind lucas and let this develope like the orginal scripts.
