‘Twilight’ Author Stephenie Meyer Sees J.K. Rowling As Kindred Spirit

Stephenie MeyerBoth were mothers who, around the time of their thirtieth birthday, first imagined a fantasy franchise that would bring them fame, fortune, and a loyal fanbase. This winter, both will provide Hollywood with an eagerly-anticipated blockbuster.

So, when I was interviewing “Twilight” novelist Stephenie Meyer this week for the story that just went live over on MTV.com, I had to ask: Has she ever met J.K. Rowling?

“No,” the affable author revealed. “But I would love to; I would love to sit down and talk with her.”

Once Meyer’s first non-”Twilight” book, entitled “The Host,” arrives in bookstores May 6th the comparisons might dwindle a bit. But while both continue to rule the world of teen-lit, she understands that they’ll always be compared to one another.

“I can see that,” she explained. “The interesting thing about the comparison is that I think you can compare my fans to her fans more easily [than me to her]. I do think that we both have people who are just really really enthusiastic, and will come miles to see you and be involved, and everybody really cares about our characters. But the ['Harry Potter' and 'Twilight'] stories are just so different.”

“J.K. Rowling’s audience is everybody, so that means we all have a piece of her audience,” Meyer laughed. “It’s terribly flattering to be compared to her, but there’s never going to be another J.K. Rowling; that’s a phenomenon that’s not gonna happen again.”

Still, Meyer insisted that if she ever did meet the “Potter” mastermind, they’d have plenty to talk about. “I’d like to hear her thoughts on her fans; I know she has this big group of people who say ‘Oh no, Harry should have ended up with another girl,’ and I wonder how she feels about that when they think they have a better ending than she does,” the writer said sympathetically. “I’d also like to hear her thoughts on the movies, and what things about them she enjoyed, and how she feels about privacy and e-mails and fan letters and that whole experience as a popular writer.”

“We have a few things in common,” she laughed. “It would be fun to share that common ground.”

Stephenie Meyer or J.K. Rowling: Whose writing style do you prefer?

  3. there's no competition.
I'm sorry, I love Twilight but I'm for Harry Potter all the way.
'Potterverse' has an incredible amount of sub-plots, isn't just about the main character and is so in-depth you feel like you could bump into the characters on your own doorstep. It's a nice break from the love-sick teenagers that are everywhere in Twilight.
I've made myself sound like I hate it, damn.
But the difference is, whereas Meyer's book is for total indulgence (you know it's true), Rowling's is just pure, oringinal, creative genius.

I'll leave you to butcher me now, hack away...
  4. comparing meyer to rowling is an insult to rowling considering meyer's stories are mediocre at best. as much as i love her twilight series...i cannot see the comparison.

meyer's stories are simplistic...it seems like it's written by a fifth grader. rowling's stories, the language is so much better
  5. M.Heart,

    1) do not compare books that you've never even read. the movies does not do HP justice 2) the reason why rowling's can NEVER be compared to meyer's work is because of skill. what you described...with "background information" is called talent. anyone can write a shallow romance novel....but to write 7 books with such great detail and connect it all is called talent and imagination. rowling literally created a world of her own....meyer? please, she took old myths and gave them a twist. all of rowling's ideas are her OWN. not to mention...meyer's works are utterly predictable.
  6. That's easy. Jo of course :)

I'm reading Twilight at the moment and I have to say the firs half could've been more interesting. It was a kind of boring start but I'm really getting into it now :D It's exciting.

With Harry Potter, I can't put the book down.
  7. ok guys there is no comparisent so why are you saying these heartful thnigs about stephanie but sure the book was easy reading but thats what made it great!! and yes before you go babbiling your mouth i have read harry potter and it is asoume but there isnt comarison i love both series
  8. I have to say I read the first Harry Potter and I got bored and didnt read the second or any of the rest. To be honest that was the first book I had ever read. My sister in law turned me onto this book and I was pretty skeptical. Me read? ya right. She told me to read the preface of the first book and I never stopped. I am now on chapter 6 of the third book and dream about it at nigh. I literally cant put this book down. its interesting how emotional I get with htis book and how I close my door at work to read instead of work (I should be saying that).
  9. To compared both J.K Rowlings and Stephenie Meyer is stupid! Every young adult likes to read different kinds of books! Some love romances like Twilight and others love action like Harry Potter. So, it really is up to the readers to choose what kind of books they like to read! Personally I love both books and both authors are amazing! I'm fan of both books! The readers really shouldn't judge a book by it's cover! I think we need to respect that everyone is different and likes different authors and books! This is my personal thought. We teenagers are different and read what you like to read and not what people say to read.
  10. Hi , I think the song ''innocence by avril lavign'' would be a perfect song for when the movie new moon comes out.. i think it would be good to put in the scene where Edward leaves. Listen to the song and then picture the song playing quietly in the background while Edward is telling bella he's leaving in the woods and then it gets loud when Bella starts to try and follow Edward in the woods when he dissapears , this is what the song says when it gets loud : '' its so beutifull it makes me wanna cry'' and then the song ends when bella lay's down in the woods :D .. just an idea . Thanks
  11. Oh and .. i could never really get into the HP books but i'm not saying JK isnt a good righter i just prefer SM . Go Twilightt! xD
  12. i believe that jk rowling's writing style in terms of creativity is so much better than stephenie's... i mean i luvvvvvvvvvvvvvv twilight don't get me wrong.....however anyone could talk about being in love...however no-one could quite create the wonderful world of witchcraft and wizardry....that is hp....i mean hogwarts, voldemort and all of the characters are so brilliant!!!!!!! anither thing 2 is that i believe that twilight has less conflict than harry potter i mean yes the volturi is great but they don't intimidate you as much as voldemort and the death eaters do 2 the readers of harry potter....i mean seriously if edward was not in that book i believe that the series would be quite dull cause i am in loveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee with edward!!!!!!! i mean.... HE IS HOT.... but i grew up with harry an i experienced all his trials and triumphs and i would definately have to choose the entire harry potter series.... i still love twilight though.....
