Considering that the first film made over $500 million worldwide, precious few details have leaked regarding "Madagascar: The Crate Escape," save for a rumored plot line which supposedly follows Alex the Lion (voiced by Ben Stiller) as he meets others of his kind on the African mainland.
Forget all that, David Schwimmer joked, calling "Madagascar 2" less another fish-out-of water story as it is a romance. Wait...what?
"There's a little love story between the giraffe, my character, and the hippo [voiced by Jada Pinkett Smith]," Schwimmer laughed. "That image of them dating – it's disturbing."
If they're gonna mate, they better get cracking. After the worldwide success of the first film, it was rumored that Melman the giraffe, Gloria the Hippo, and the rest of the jungle crew would become the next flagship franchise for Dreamworks Animation, with another sequel every year or so to compliment "Shrek."
That's news to Schwimmer, who insisted that there are no plans beyond the series' second entry.
"Boy, that's the first I've heard of that," he said when we asked if there was a possible third film coming. "I hope so. Not only is it a blast to do but I can't tell you how many kids come up to me and just talk about Melman, that giraffe. So the more the merrier. But that's honestly the first I've heard of that."
But what if they came to him for an idea? What would Schwimmer's dream plot for a third installment be?
"Maybe them returning to New York and something happening in New York," he mused. "Bring it back, you know what I'm saying? Bring it back home. Full circle!"
