‘Twilight’ Co-Star Rachelle Lefevre Talks Treetop Controversy

Rachelle LefevreIf it’s possible to create a riot in cyberspace, “Twilight” star Kristen Stewart may have done just that a few weeks ago, mentioning a scene in the upcoming movie in which “[Robert Pattinson as Edward] throws me over his back, right before he’s going to tell me that he’s a vampire, and then he runs over the treetops.”

Some 1,600 comments later, the debate rages on, over whether the scene strays too far from the book’s depiction. Naturally, when we landed the first-ever on-set “Twilight” interview with Stewart’s co-star Rachelle Lefevre, we had to get her thoughts on whether those treetops would be tweaking “Twilight” too much.

“There’s a scene where Edward reveals to Bella that he is a vampire, and he doesn’t just reveal that he’s a vampire, he reveals all that that encompasses,” Lefevre said of the script. “It’s almost a demonstration, and I think that scene is going to be amazing.”

The actress, who plays the vampire Victoria in the flick, added that the cast has spent the past few weeks training for such stunts. “I haven’t seen all of the stunts specifically, but I did see a setup of that while I was doing my wire work,” she revealed. “I would imagine that [Stewart's statement] is exactly what they are going to do.

“They’re talking like it’s really going to happen,” Lefevre added. “We did a rehearsal at one point where [director] Catherine [Hardwicke] was like, ‘They went up in the tree, but we’re not doing that today.’ I think we are really doing that.”

Before you post your comments below, Lefevre wants you to consider that the treetop-running thing does happen at other times in the “Twilight” series, even if not in the moment when Edward reveals himself.

“I think that there is a scene where a character ends up in a treetop in the book,” she explained. “I don’t want to say who, but there are treetop scenes in the book. But there are also things that are described in the book — the stunts that we are going to be doing, as far as I understand it, are very accurate to what’s in the book.

“You want to put as much action and excitement into the movie as possible,” Lefevre said of the controversy. “So sometimes things get heightened.”

So, twi-hards: What do you think?

  1. UGH WITH THE TREETOP BUSINESS. Obviously she hasn't read the books or her reading comprehension is worse than my eleven-year-old sister's because she has read the books and knows that there is not a single scene where they are in a tree. Not one. And I've seriously read this series at least 20 times (I plan on being a writer and I thought Stephenie Meyer was excellent, so I was analyzing her writing style) and they seriously didn't go up in the trees. UGH UGH UGH they should just take that Peter Pan crap out of the movie. It makes the whole vampire scenario even less credible.
  2. I think that people need to realize that this is a book...which is stirckly from Bella's view...being made into a movie...where they have to show many different points a views. They can't make a movie strictly focusing on Bella and having her in every scene like a novel would read. So yeah Victoria doesn't acutally say anything in the book but of course there is going to be lots of things that are said in the movie that aren't in the book. The book is a monologue..Bella's story. The movie will have to show what James and Victoria do when Bella and the rest of the Cullens aren't around, so yeah don't get your panties in a bunch just because Victoria actually has some dialogue in the film. It's a movie, it would be very boring if they took the script directly from the book and made it into a movie because you would only see and hear what Bella sees and hears. They have to create dialogue for when Bella isn't around so that the story can be better understood from a film point of view.
  3. I cant wait to see the movie! Twilight is my favorite book!
People need to understand when a book is made into a movie, not all the facts in the book are going to be in the movie, it happens, for example Harry Potter. So people should just be happy that they are making this amazing book in a movie. I hope it turns out great, cause i can't wait!
  4. And also...stop ragging on Rachelle just because she hasn't read the books doesn't mean that she doesn't know what she's talking about. She's read the script and this interview with her isn't the first that i've read about a "tree-top" scene, so obviously the scene where Edward is running with Bella on top of his back through the woods the director has decided to create it as them running on top of the trees. Will people please just stop whining about the fact that there is NO TREE-TOP scene. Everyone knows that, the fact that you've read the book 20 times doesn't prove that you know anymore than someone who's read it once. I've read it a few times and after reading it the first time I could have told anyone that they ran through trees...not on top of them. I think that the actors and anyone that has anything to do with the movie should not even bother telling us what's going to happen because anytime they do, there seems to a b***h fest going on about how the actors don't know what they are talking about, and i've read it 20 billion times and i've never read that. I can't wait for the movie because I realize that the movie business is a whole lot different than the literature/writing business and you may have to change things when you take a book and make it into a movie. I will agree with the people that stated that the "Port Angeles" scene and the scene where Bella "tricks" Jacob into telling her about the "Cold Ones" most definitely should be in the movie because they are very key points in the story.
  5. Ok I thought that Bella tells Edward her "theory" After the thing in Port Angels and how could Edward run on a tree unless he could fly. I don't think I get what she means. But whatevs you shouldn't always believe everything you hear i guess. Anyway I am going to stop anyalizing and be excited (and grateful) for the movie...
  6. One more thing I'm Sooooo happy that there is going to be a movie and I don't care that it is not the same as the books, but Jacob has to be the one to tell her about the cold ones because as we all know Jacob becomes a trivial part later in the book and I think that scene is important especially if they are going to continue with the movies
  7. what these people need to realize is that it NEVER works when people change movie adaptations from the book. NEVER. NO EXCEPTIONS. sure, the director may think "this is a cool thing to add" or something, but if it's not in the book, DON'T DO IT. that means none of this "james being the mortal enemy" thing, no tree-top stuff, and KEEP AS MUCH STUFF THE SAME AS POSSIBLE. If you must change something, change something minor that no one cares about - like the scenes with Mike Newton or something. Don't change big stuff like the Port Angeles scene, because that WILL cause everyone to hate the movie. Look at what happened to the Da Vinci code! They changed so much stuff and it sucked. Don't do this to Twilight.
  8. Whoa whoa whoa!
    Time out!
    :o
I just read on one of the comments that Laurent and James are going to be mortal.
    WTF!?!?!??!?!?
Excuse the French please, but seriously.
    THEY CAN'T BE MORTAL!
Is this true? Someone please clarify. I will NOT see the movie if they are. That is just retarded. I don't like this anymore. At all. Stop saying for us to be grateful because it's our hard-earned cash that is going to pay for the ticket to see such movie. So if I don't like the trailors, I won't watch it. End of story. I'm not going to watch a movie that will ruin the image of the book in my head. Sorry, but no.
  9. Oh. Nvm. Misread. My bad. :]
  10. ok this is awsome!!!! and also the whole character in a treetop thing. it does happen, i think sorta, when edward is taking bella to the field to see the game (twilight) and after the fight with victoria when he takes her back to everyone else because the volturi are coming, pretty much the scene where he tells her that jacob is hurt. yea i know i just got to specific there but im sorry, ive read the book four times, sue me. alos, rachel will play an awsome victoria. whoooo!!!!
  11. ok, response to -edward's brand of heroin- person. UMM, yea u kinda to have to add things to scripts when ur adapting a movie from a book, i know it tweeks but dude honestly u can't make a movie EXACTLY how it is in the book, u have to understand that people's intrepration of books differ, so if u don't like the fact that their changing a couple of things, then don't go watch the flippin movie!!!
  12. ok, response to -edward's brand of heroin- person.
  13. I only have one thing to say. Be Thankful that they're trying to stay true to the book, and this isn't gonna be another Blood and Chocolate.

Shutup about trivial matters, if you're going to be that ?*?~ retentive, the don't go see the movie, because I guarantee it will be something like this:

Victoria: 'I love it when men chase me'
Annoying twihard flipping through book in theatre: SHE NEVER SAYS THAT WTFOMGWORSTMOVIEEVERRR.
    Cool twihards: -facepalm-
  14. NO! They Should not do something that wasnt in the book!!! That would be very upsetting!!!!!!!! AND THERE ARE NO TREETOP SCENES IN THE BOOK!!!!!!!!!! I MABYE JUST ANOTHER OBSESSED CHARACTER BUT THAT WOULD RUIN THE MOVIE COMPLETLEY!!!!!!
  15. Well, coming from someone who researches EVERYTHING, it kinda bothers me that she hasn't read the books. Victoria is a tiny part, but I know that if I were to be acting a movie, I'd at least read the book first.
  16. i've read the series more than three times, at least. not one time have i read about someone in the treetops. Edward's not superman. and if Edward's just gonna tell Bella he's a vampire, then what's Jacob for? They can't not have a Jacob, if they want another movie. Jacob pretty much was the book New Moon.
  17. They don't run on the tops of trees, they look at them. This is after he tells Bella but it isnt on the same day.
  18. ok people..
quit whining about Rachelle being "illiterate" and all that other crap.
RACHELLE was not the one to originally state the facts about the treetop-running scene
KRISTEN was the one who said that
Rachelle was just commenting that there was another part in the series where such a thing occurred

btw, to all of those who continually say: "theres never a treetop running scene in the book, blah blah blah"... YOU CAN STOP SAYING THAT NOW!!! please, read other comments and see that about a gazillion other "twi-hards" have said that
it gets just a teensy bit redundant.
JUST BE GRATEFUL THAT THERE'S ACTUALLY GOING TO BE A MOVIE!!!!!!!!!!!!
  19. Ok, yes I know they need to pump up the movie more..but it sounds like they are cutting out the scene where they are riding in the car back from the dinner in Port Angles (spelled wrong)..and that is a VITAL scene!!!
  20. I agree w/ Cara, they should really get their facts straight. we aren't called 'twi-hards' for nothing. (i had nvr heard of that til now tho. actually the name is kinda degrading and totally doesnt display the level of commitment.)
Maybe they misinterpreted running THRU trees as actually being up IN THEM. THEY'RE ON THE GROUND!

i bet stephenie meyer culd tell u if she got any say in the movie
  21. The treetop scene is in Eclipse, toward the end.
  22. In this case, if people b*tch, it's because Rachelle got her facts wrong. There are several instances when Edward runs through the trees, and I can definitely see how she could take as running up in the branches. But there is no PHYSICAL description of them in the branches or treetops, whatever the actresses are saying.
And even if people do b*tch about the treetops and that whole plot sequence it's because Port Angeles IS an important part of the plot! It reveals so many things about the characters as well. Like someone said, it's pivotal.
  23. Oh, and I reread the last ten chapters of Eclipse, and I didn't recognize anything describing tree tops. So if you could point out the specific chapter that you found this in...?
And also, this has cropped up in several people's comments, but where on earth is this Myspace interview where Stephenie talks about Edward climbing up a tree? I look on her wesbite, the Lexicon, and her myspace, but I couldn't find it.
  24. As long as they don't completely butcher the story line. I'm fine. Sure I would like for it to follow the story line as much as possible. But it's impossible not to have a few changes... I'm just hoping that it doesn't stray as far from the book as say, "Ella Enchanted" or on a supernatural note "Blood and Chocolate." Both movies butchered the books. But from what i've read Stephenie Meyers seems to be okay with how they are portraying the book and since it is in fact her book, I'll accept that she knows what she is talking about. haha.
  25. There is no tree-hopping in the book, though naturally it's possible. As others have mentioned, Edward is briefly in a tree (watching Bella in the yard) - I'd imagine that this is what Rachelle is referencing.

What the scene is taken from, on the other hand, is no doubt Edward circling the meadow in an instant, tearing a bough from a tree and hurling it at another. This has probably been replaced/supplemented with the tree running to make it more cinematic. Not ideal, but not the end of the world.

Far more important than all of this are Rachelle's comments in her other interview - that the actors are all highly committed to their roles, and that the director is investing time in physicalising th vampires. Extremely promising!

Best wishes to all the cast - I think Rachelle will be a fantastic Victoria.

(oh, and the 'twi-hards' thing is most amusing. A little patronising in intent, perhaps, but I'm sure we can take it in a good way)

    Proud Twihard! ;D

    J

PS If I'm not mistaken, Rachelle may have started the next controversy by quoting that very un-bookish line...I can't imagine where in the film it will be, but I'm sure they'll make it amusing rather than tacky. Others may be less forgiving, judging by the record thus far...
  26. Ok so I have been waiting for this movie but people have to remember that the reason they are even making a movie is being made of Twilight is because the BOOK was so popular. All movies are either written by playwrites or are books that have been turned into movies. When I read Blood and Chocolate I was excited about seeing the movie but when I watched the trailer I could tell that it wasn't similar so I didn't see it. I hope that this movie is good otherwise I will be sad as will many other people I know and if it doesn't stick close to the storyline I have a feeling MANY people will be dissapointed. So let's try to hope that they stick to the book because I know that since everyone has read it they have been waiting for a movie to be made and if they #?$$? that up then the chances are high that we are all going to be pissed off. Also I don't remember any treetop scene, I remember the field scene where Edward showed Bella how scary/strong he can be but no treetop.
  27. i'm pretty sure there was nothing about tree tops in any of the books. the only thing i can remember about action with trees is when edward breaks one to show bella his strength.
  28. Well, I've seen a scene of the script where they really run over some tree tops... but I'm not sure if the scrips was faked, I hope so...
  29. ok where in the book does it say that edward tells bella. bella figures it out on her own after her weekend at la push when she meets jacob black; and whats with the treetop thing? that never happened in the book and i kinda would know cuz ive read the trilogy five times and im reading twilight again. maybe the director or the screen writer should read the twilight trilogy a couple of times so they can get the story right.
  30. The only problem I have with the treetop scene is that I'm not sure if it would be believable. It wouldn't make sense, in my mind, for Edward to get up in a tree and run/jump through them. Perhaps they're just not explaining in the right way to make us understand, or we're just too stupid to understand what they're saying, haha. As for some people saying we should be grateful, I disagree. We don't need to be grateful that a certain actor or actress decided to join the cast. They get PAID for it. Since when should a person be grateful that a person is just doing their job (unless they save their life or something, then I'd understand). Now I'm done "ranting". And please don't take anything into offense that I've said. I've meant everything with sincerity.
  31. that scene deviates way to far from the book. bella's intuition about stuff, including figuring out the cullens/hales is a vital part of the entire series. **spoiler alert** bella finds out,and edward demonstrates his awesome powers, but both occur after she falls in love with him. it just wont work if they do it this way; she has to figure it out for herself.
  32. If I recall correctly, Bella officially knows that Edward is a vampire on the ride back home from Port Angeles, when she tells him about her theory. She only sees the true extent of his powers in the meadow, which I am assuming is when the scene Kristen Stuart talks about occurs.
So basically this information tells me that they're totally rearranging the events in Twilight. My hopes aren't high.
However, if Stephenie has some expectations for the movie, I won't give up all my hope just yet.

My fingers are crossed. (Please don't *@?@~ up the Twilight movie the way the Harry Potter movies were butchered!)
  33. I can't wait untill the movie comes out! i'm already obsessed with the books! the movie will be fine with a tree top scene in it! although when she (rachelle lefevre)said that there's a treetop scene in the book that isn't true, in an interview she does need to have her facts straight, if she wasn't sure then she shouldn't have said anything because it doesnt' make her look good!! but it's alright to slip up!! everyone makes mistakes!!
  34. OMG!

    2 things:

    1) Rachelle Lefevre is going to be soooooooo good!

    2) I have read the twilguth series 15 times (not kidding) and there is absolutely NOTHING about any characters running on trees. I hope the movie is great!
  35. i have read twilight four times, and there has never ever been apart with a treetop in it! i hope they don't ruin the movie, cause if they do, the whole series will kinda in a way be ruined.
  36. I'll trust the movie people and Stephanie Meyers not to do anything truly awful; but if, before the movie comes out they choose a gorilla in a pink tutu to play Jacob or something equally as painful (hard to imagine, I know) then watch out! Hell hath no fury like a fangirl scorned!
  37. OK i for one have read Teilight 12 times and i do NOT recall any tree-TOP.. parts in it! Did i miss somthing in those twelve times??.. Im going to go back and read it again ... I mean its no big deal if it snot exactly like the book guys.. though i understand you concerns. I for one, do not want them "ruining" the movie.. but i think putting Edward and Bella up in the trees will be .. more thriling .. than doing it in the forest..Just think how fast he realy must be running to stay on top of the trees!! Yes i do belive that the twaks in the movie will bring out good.. as long as they dont over step there bounds. I dont think we have any cause to worrie ... they wil do a gret job... i hop. Xoxo Nena
  38. ok so heres my thinking..
    1) I've read the series so many times it unreal (I'm a nerd about it, I admit it) and theres def. no tree top running anywhere
    2) Who cares if they add it in the movie? Adding more cool stunts will just make it more exciting, and thats just fine with me! we all know that theres no way the movie will ever be exactly what the books are, but the fact that it's coming to life at all is good enough for me : )
  39. OMG!!!!COULD WE JUST STOP OSESSING ABOUT THE F**KEN TREE TOP SCENE IN THE MOVIE OR BOOK!!!goSH!IT'S SO ANNOYING!!LIKE A GAZILLION PEOPLE KEEP ON FREAKIN OSESSING ABOUT IT WHEN IT'S A FREAKIN INSIGNIFICANT PART! *@~#! (EXCUSE MY FRENCH)JUST STOP IT RIGHT NOW OR I GONNA HAVE TO SMACK SOMEBODY. IT A FREAKIN BLOG PEOPLE WHY ARE YOU B***HES WHO KEEP ON OSESSING WASTING YOUR TIME TYPING ABOUT SOMETHING NO ONE CARES ABOUT!! AND IF YOU'RE THAT PISSED OFF THEN DON'T WATCH THE F**KENN DAM MOVIE!!!!!!!!!GEEZ, LIKE GO WRITE SOME WHERE ELSE ABOUT THAT SCENE WHERE PEOPLE CARE, BECAUSE I KNOW ALOT OF OTHER girls like myself don't give to hear bullcrap!!1
  40. ya i agree with annie i so do not recall any treetop scenes in the book..... sry... but in my opinion the movie is deviating from the book but i still want to see the movie, sounds like another great story...!!!
  41. Ok, so maybe they don't go into the tree tops. Big deal!! How many of our favorite books never make it to the big screen!! This is AWESOME!!!! I have also heard people putting down some of the actors and actresses because they don't look the part, but give them a chance! Seriously, it's not like there is someone who is as short as a hobbit, looks like Voldemort, or is as pale as a vampire! I can't wait to see what this movie has to offer. I only hope I can make it to December!
  42. I think everyone should be thankful for all the effort the producers/directors are doing to make this movie above and beyond good. Personally, I am thrilled at their determination to be accurate even though some things have to be heightened just to make it better (It's Hollywood people).I'm sure Rachelle will do a fabulous job as Victoria and they will find a way to make her more evil looking... but give her a break! Okay so she is in the movie and she got a fact wrong. Not everyone is as avid readers as us "Twihards" or whatever we're called.
  43. After reading the interviews with Rachel I am really happy about the cast.
She seems REALLY great and has a grasp on what people expect of her.
She has enthusiasm and spunk and her small hints at the stunts and movie sound really awesome. This movie is going to be epic. I can not wait.
I whole-heartedly agree with Rachel being cast as Victoria. She will be awesome.
  44. Ok,
you people need to stop freaking out about the damn tree top and start freaking out about the people that were chosen to play the parts.
    1. they look and have none of the essence of the characters from the book.
    2. they look older, when they are suppose to be younger.
    3. the most important thing is that they could've saved all of the above if they had only chosen the right edward....for this crap they shouldn't be making the movie at all.
everytime i go to stephenie's page, i just wanna cry and kill the damn writers, because it looks like they never read the book, only got the cliff notes version. if they had read it they would've noticed that "cedric diggory" was never, is not and never will be Edward.

thank you... those are my two cents.

ps. same thing goes for the damn actress playing bella aka:Kristen Stewart
  45. while I am worried about them straying too far from the book; that is always inevitable in movies made from books. I mean just look at Harry Potter.
While I am positive there is no Edward running through treetops scene in the book (having just finished reading it yesterday), I am also positive that if he wanted to, he absolutely could do it. He's EDWARD.
I'm sure I'm going to be dissapointed with a lot of the cuts, and changes to the storyline, but I think visually the film will be stunning. Really it should only enhance our reading experience, because after seeing it we will be able to read the book again with more of a visual idea of what things like sparkling in the sun and running a hundred miles an hour actually look like.
  46. wtf?
i dont think tweaking it is going to do much good. how far will they take it? how much will they end up taking out? theres a reason the book was a bestseller. i just hope this movie doesnt end up a disappointment.
  47. You know... Everyone is entitled to their opinion, we all can agree on one sure thing though, we love the book, and are all very excited about the fact that its being turned into a movie. I understand why some people would be up-set when you hear things that may suggest that the movie may stray too far from the book... me personally I was bothered by the tree top comment that kristen made as well not so much because of the tree top bit, but the fact that she said it was before bella figured out Edward was a vampire. I thought that was too far from the story line of the book, but its just one of those things that we have to just wait and see the finished product... till then we just have to hope they portray the love, passion and danger between Bella and Edward as accurately as possible.
  48. the way rachelle describes the treetop scene makes it sound pretty cool so i'm now anxious to see that. i hope they won't cut the Port Angeles scene since it's one of my favorites, but I understand in movies they can't keep everything the same. I remember how some people were freaking out over Harry Potter 5 since some scenes from the book weren't there but the book was the longest of the series, so they're not going to keep everything. Also, one question: where is everybody reading things from the script? I'd love to read some :)
  49. I'm pretty sure there /isn't/ a treetop scene... *sigh* I think they're really distorting the books. Part of me doesn't even want the movie made and to see it all messed up. =(
  50. I realize that no movie is ever going to be 100% true to the book it is based on, but some of the key elements HAVE to remain the same. Pivotal moments, such as when Bella realizes (Edward never really came out and said it, in the beginning at least) that Edward is, indeed, a vampire, have to be the same or it changes the sense the storyline gives you. Subtle details can be changed, a few extra events that are not central to the plot can be added or deleted, but I certainly hope they are not going to change the essence of this story. I, and many others like me, will be very disappointed. (By the way, I am in my forties, and although I do not usually get uptight about things like this, I have to admit I've been a big fan ever since my daughter made me - yes, she actually forced me - read these books; and being that I have been around to see several books-made-movies, I know what I and many other people besides me can put up with as far as straying from the original story goes)...
