‘Twilight’ Co-Star Rachelle Lefevre Talks Treetop Controversy

Rachelle LefevreIf it’s possible to create a riot in cyberspace, “Twilight” star Kristen Stewart may have done just that a few weeks ago, mentioning a scene in the upcoming movie in which “[Robert Pattinson as Edward] throws me over his back, right before he’s going to tell me that he’s a vampire, and then he runs over the treetops.”

Some 1,600 comments later, the debate rages on, over whether the scene strays too far from the book’s depiction. Naturally, when we landed the first-ever on-set “Twilight” interview with Stewart’s co-star Rachelle Lefevre, we had to get her thoughts on whether those treetops would be tweaking “Twilight” too much.

“There’s a scene where Edward reveals to Bella that he is a vampire, and he doesn’t just reveal that he’s a vampire, he reveals all that that encompasses,” Lefevre said of the script. “It’s almost a demonstration, and I think that scene is going to be amazing.”

The actress, who plays the vampire Victoria in the flick, added that the cast has spent the past few weeks training for such stunts. “I haven’t seen all of the stunts specifically, but I did see a setup of that while I was doing my wire work,” she revealed. “I would imagine that [Stewart's statement] is exactly what they are going to do.

“They’re talking like it’s really going to happen,” Lefevre added. “We did a rehearsal at one point where [director] Catherine [Hardwicke] was like, ‘They went up in the tree, but we’re not doing that today.’ I think we are really doing that.”

Before you post your comments below, Lefevre wants you to consider that the treetop-running thing does happen at other times in the “Twilight” series, even if not in the moment when Edward reveals himself.

“I think that there is a scene where a character ends up in a treetop in the book,” she explained. “I don’t want to say who, but there are treetop scenes in the book. But there are also things that are described in the book — the stunts that we are going to be doing, as far as I understand it, are very accurate to what’s in the book.

“You want to put as much action and excitement into the movie as possible,” Lefevre said of the controversy. “So sometimes things get heightened.”

So, twi-hards: What do you think?

  1. omg, im so upset. where in the whole flippin series is there a tree-top scene? seriously!
i kno ppl just sound whiny, but honestly, they are ruining an art here. The twilight series has 2 b one of the best in the whole world, and i think that tweaking it is a little crazy. THERE ARE NO TREE-TOP SCENES.
im not upset just because of that though, its more of the fact that i love these books so much that ever since i read twilight i have LITERALLY made ppl become absolutely OBSESSED. you dont even know what im talking about. to ruin this, omg, its freakin blasphemy.
i know i sound crazy but honestly, every single one of my friends is pissed. im excited for the movie, but i honestly think id be happier if they just kept it at books....
  2. OMG!OMG!OMG!OMG!OMG!OMG!OMG!OMG!OMG!OMG!OMG!OMG!OMG!OMG!OMG!OMG!OMGOMGOMGOMG!OMG!OMG!MG!OMG!OMG!........... i have no idea why i wrote OMG! but whatever..... i think the running on tree tops would be great, but it has to be perfectly done like not corny or cheesy at all.... i'm excitd on what the young lady whose playing Victoria had to say, she makes herself and the other actors seem really pumped!! yay........I agree with Bella_twilight, i hope Jacob tells bella about the cold ones and his tribes ancient stories. My Jacob (i wonder whose playing him hmm)HEHEHEHE have a nice wait all you "twi-hards"!
  3. There is no scene in the book where any of the vampires run in the treetops. I guess for those of us who love Twilight dearly, it was a bit of a shock when the first sneak peek of storyline revealed something that didn't happen in the book. From my perspective, although I love Twilight and I am excited about the movie, I am also worried that it might not do the book justice. I HOPE that it does, I really do, but a small part of me is worried about how it will turn out. So, that is why I was annoyed when I heard this "treetop" storyline. If they can work it into the story so it doesn't look overdone - thats wonderful - but if this is the beginning of a whole bunch of differences in an already perfect storyline, then I don't care who disagrees with me, I won't be happy. I know that screen adaptations of a book are never the same, I just prey that they do a good job with Twilight!
  4. I found the casting sides online somewhere a few weeks ago and the "Treetops" scene was included. Apparently, according to this draft, Edward and Bella were in his bedroom (The scene is in the book...) but when they were wrestling, Edward wrestles her right out the window into a tree, and then he leaps from tree to tree... haha, the description said something about a "flying squirrel" and they get this really awesome view of the sunrise. It was actually pretty cute. And come on, people. You have to expect that they'll take some license with the book. I think if Stephenie's happy with the script, we should all be too. :)
  5. Btw, twi-hards? Who said that? I personally don't consider myself... "that." We are loyal fans and of course we're not conformist circus monkeys. What's wrong with that?

I'm not against Rachelle, I think she's perfect for the role (she'll be prettier than Rosalie hahah so I'm ok with that cause I don't like Rosalie.) But seriously, did she read the book? Because she seems that she wanted the role just because of the "vampire" thing.
  6. Well of course they've got to jazz it up for the big screen, but as long as they stay true to the heart of the plots I don't really think I'm going to be bothered by them taking some liberty with the stunts. To all you Teilight nerds who want it to be completely true to the book, sorry, but no way. They've got to be allowed to do something.

But to me it sounds like they're going to completley change how bella find out about vampires (maybe even getting rid of Jacob) and that will not fly. Besides, if they're going to do the rest of the books, Jacob is more than a little important.
  7. Well maybe she ment a different character, because in New Moon after Jacob sees Bella for the first time after changing he goes into the tree outside of her window. Maybe thats an instance that she was thinking about?? I'm really excited for this movie, but also very nervous. The Twilight Saga has really helped me in the last few months. It's almost like a comfort blanket for me. I just hope that the movie doesn't get too unbelievable. I'm interested to see how they show Edward sparkling in the sunlight in the meadow (my favorite scene!).
  8. There is not treetop scene in the books ........unless it is in BD. Then all those weird scenes being mentioned on the web would make sense. But then again movies are never the same as books.
  9. ok first of all did she even read the book? Im not trying to me mean at all but i am a little peaved because it seems that she might have just skimed it. Any one that has read the book at least three times each, like myself, know that there are no treetops. I think they should be trying to stay the true course of the book. Oh Well! Though i feel the effect will be awsome. I am looking forward to seeing that rendition of the story. I will miss seeing edward run through the forest.

PS vampires have to obey the laws of gravity too!
  10. Yeah, I am still a bit worried about this running over the treetops scene, but I'm confident it'll turn out alright...
hopefully it's just not too corny!

And as for the casting, everyone seems great!
    I can't wait for the movie! :D
  11. Having been part of this fandom since the beginning it upsets me to see incorrect information about us spread by media trying to cash in.

I have never been called a twi-hard and personally I rather dislike the name. We have always been referred to as Twilighters, Lexiconers, or Stephenites. I just feel that if you are going to report on a certain group of fans you should at least get their name right.

Also, I think the main reason their is so much controversy over this treetop thing is because it seems a bit excessive. Never in the series are vampires flying around or running on top of trees, sure it is probably possible for Stephenie's vampires to accomplish such a feat but still it is not in the book and why make things more complicated?

I feel that movies based off of anything with a rather large fanbase would do well to listen to the community they are going to be selling to. Sure, I understand that their still needs to be a commercial aspect, but really... if the book has sold the way it has why would a movie do any worse. Just by changing its medium it is bound to do better as more people in this day and age are willing to sit and watch a movie than read (sad but true).

My main point I guess is. As a whole listen to the fans. Talk to fans directly for their viewpoint and why. And please just get your information straight if you are going to report on a group of people.
  12. Haha, silly Catherine Hardwicke and Melissa Rosenberg. They end up UNDERNEATH the tree tops, not below them. Also, Edward reveals to Bella that he's a vampire in his stupid, shiny Volvo and last time I checked, this wasn't Jumper and there were no trees involved in that scene. Silly, silly. I mean really Melissa, did you even read the books?
  13. Sorry but, Robert is ugly.
  14. Okay, so this movie... It sounds like it will be a big hit and is very much anticipated by a lot of the fans. I am a fan myself, loving all the books aloooot.... BUT. I somewhat disagree with some of the casting, and I am very disappointed. This "Tree-Hopping" scene, it does sound entertaining and may be a fun-twist to the movie, but there really is no tree-hopping scene in the book...
The reason why I'm really kind of high-hoping for this movie is because, honestly, I was really disappointed with the Blood and Chocolate movie interpretation of the book, and Eragon. I don't want Twilight to become another disappointment. It may be acceptable for them to change some parts, but plleeeeeeaaaseee leave plot-cruicial points alone!!!
Also... no offense... but with the many other Twilight fans I agree. Get your facts straight.
  15. Um, I don't care so much about the treetop thing, which sounds cheesy but maybe it won't be, we'll see. I'm worried about the fact that they're making Edward tell Bella he's a vampire. That just is completely wrong!!! I mean what, he and his entire family work so hard to keep it a secret so they can stay in Forks, and then he just tells her and betrays his family because he likes her? He never wanted to her to find out, though in a way he did of course, but still! That is something they shouldn't change. GRRR.
  16. I fully agree with you Fayee.
  17. I think that they should leave the Port Angeles scene in and ditch the tree top scene. Just my opinion though..
  18. I do not worry about tree tops it will be really cool. No one has seem to notice how very important it is that Jacob tells Bella about the cold ones (that the cullens are vampires) why you say?? Because he breaks the treaty so in fact if Edward ever does bite Bella he is not breaking the treaty because Jacob already did. I hope no one forgets just how important this is to all the books and to the end I am sure. Also I love Robert Pattinson he is a amazing actor and I'm so excited he is going to play Edward they couldn't have picked a better and more talented actor to play him. And were are the side's you all talk about? you never said, please do share us other Twi-Hards need to know. bye for now and Thank heaven for Edward Cullen the sexist vampire ever!!!
    Lisa Cullen
  19. why is everybody so freaked out? this movie is gonna be so great, be glad they are even making a movie. it sounds like they have some great stunts for the parts in the woods. please, just stop complaining so much and judge it after you see it in december. i think the casting choices are perfect, and they are doing an incredible job making my favorite book into a movie.
  20. People are not so much "freaked out" by a tree top scene as they are about the possibility that they will stray from the book so much throughout the movie that it will only slightly represent it and that it will lose what makes it valuable. There is a tree top scene... in Eclipse. Jacob outside Bella's room. Is that what she is referring to? I just finished reading them for the (gulp) third time and there is NO OTHER TREE TOP SCENE. We all wish the actors and actresses were as...involved... as us in this saga, but they have a life.
  21. i say they leave the story line alone. it's perfect just as it is. they don't need to make it more exciting. ever time i read any of the twilight books there is so much excitement and adrenaline in me! it's plenty exciting. why mess with a good thing? and besides the port angeles scene is crucial to the story line. you can't just cut it out! i would much rather see that scene than edward running on tree tops. it just seems like too much. as a die hard twilight fan i say that they should nix the tree top scene and change only minimal things about the story line.
  22. Pg. 280..."There was no sound, no evidence that his feet touched the earth...But the trees flew by at deadly speeds, always missing us by inches." I'm guessing that this line is where this whole "tree-top" controversy is coming from. It's ambiguous, and allows for interpretation.
  23. i agree with cara, its not that fans are opposed to some changes, because we all know theyre inevitable
its the fact that people are trying to convince us that we are wrong. everyone here obviously feels very strongly about the books, and yea, edward was watching bella from a tree once. but he was not running on tree tops and the exagerration is probably making people nervous that the movie is going to stray to far from the book. also, if this scene is where edward tells bella he is a vampire, then the port angeles scene must have been cut, and to me and many many other die hard fans, that is an extremely significant and moving part of the series, i just feel that too many changes may portray edward as a different kind of person.
  24. I'm most definately NOT a "Twi-hard" we are called Twilighters, so MTV get it straight. Just because Michael Welch made up a name for us, does NOT mean that we're called that. There is NOT a scene in the twilight book with Tree Tops Rachelle. Just because you are playing Victoria doesn't give you the right to spread lies about the book. but on a different note. I can't wait for the movie...and i'll just bear with the differences.
  25. One more thing Robert Pattienson is very very good looking he is perfect to play Edward, those amazing eyes the whole package. go read what Stepheine said about him and his eyes on her page. Please be nice if you do not like him playing Edward and you do not agree he is atractive fine but don't post it for everyone to see its really childish and there is no need to be so cruel.
  26. Actually I think she's right about the treetops scene, I haven't read the books for a few months but I'm sure when they are fighting Victoria and her lackey in Eclips, one of them ends up in a tree and then throws themselves down to try land on Edward. I may be wrong but it seems familiar.

So she probably is right in the respect that the trees are involved in film, but the fact that it doesn't happen in Twilight but in Eclipse, doesn't make any difference, it is something that Vamps are able to do so lets just enjoy the final result.
  27. LMFBO, seriously people, I am so excited about this flippin movie; the cast looks great. I am actually looking forward to a fresh approach; I'd love to see hot vampires on treetops, wouldn't u?!
But I swear; one more complaint and I am gonna go shoot a tree or something. Environmentalists, beware!
I loooove Edward Diggory... I hope Jake's in here, too. I would die if not.
  28. I trust these people to do they best that they can adapting this book. It is not an easy thing taking a book and making it a movie. With writing, you can get very personal and the reader can get incredibly tangled in the characters...Carrying that same feeling(or trying to) on screen is a whole other arena

I think everyone needs to give these actors a break. Especially Robert Pattinson..I mean come on...Have you SEEN him act??? That guys got it down! : ) I have no doubts on the out come of his performance
  29. I'm happy that Twilight is going to be produced into a movie, but I truly don't want this movie to turn into another Eragon! Yes, I flipped once I heard about the tree-tops thing, because I've read it over and over again plenty of times...more than I should, but I'm an addict of Twilight...and there is no where that states that Edward is on a tree top...he picks up a tree and throws it in chapter 13...if i'm correct (not saying I am) in one of the books he flings himself from the tree in Bella's yard to get to her window (or was that jacob?)

I'm not really concerned about it really, if it makes Twilight look great that I'm happy! I just don't want it looking all corny. I'm happy with the actors to a point and I can't wait for December to come around! So let's get off of the bad foot and do the dance!
  30. I have read the books so many times that i have lost count and i can guarantee that they never once go up into the tree tops. Hope they make up to many ridiculous things that ruin the movie.

Who came up with the whole twi-hard thing? I have never heard that before, ever.
  31. vera, dont worry too much about the jake bit. ive read the sides and there is a small part where he hints at it. its not large, and no where near the same, but they havent forgotten him at least...i mean, he kinda gets important in NM and eclipse lol hope that helps you feel a little better :)
  32. I've been reading a few cast interview lately (namely Robert Pattinson, Peter Facinelli [I hope I spelled that right] and Ashley Greene and I'm so excited about the fact that the cast members are taking their roles so seriously!

I think we should all be glad that the cast is so dedicated to getting their roles as close to the real characters as possible and stop worrying about what happens in the movie. After all, it can't be exactly the same. Stephenie Meyer herself is really happy about the movie so I'm pretty much convinvced it's going to be good.
  33. Victoria, the twi-hard thing came up on Michael Welch (the guy playing Mike Newton)'s website. He came up with the name in a letter he wrote to the Twilight fandom and the name kind stuck. It's been popping up everywhere.
  34. They are never in a tree-top in the book. She doesn't know what she's talking about.
  35. Wait.. doesn't the whole 'im a vampire Bella' thing happen in port angeles?
  36. This sounds soooo good! I don't remember the treetop scene (and I am obsessed), but, as long as it's done well, I dont care!!!! Woooop!
  37. First, I have read this book my fair share of times and no one ever runs across a tree top. I am pretty sure of that. And second, please stop calling the fans "Twi-Hards". Do you have any idea how ridiculous that is? It makes us sound like a bunch of teenie-boppers. We are honest fans and we know what happens in the book. It's really ridiculous how no one seems to think we understand.
  38. I don't think there is a tree top scene in the book, the only tree scene was the meadow with Bella and Edward and when they're running through the trees...i could be wrong though LOL
  39. i don't rememer no treetop scene
  40. um i have never read anything about anyone on treetops in the book. not any of like the million times ive read it.
hmm..i hope this will be good.
    no flying cullens hopefully!
  41. hmm.

i have no problem with the treetop thing...itll only add to the visual of the movie so im not worried.

but nowwherree does anyone run on treetops.
ive read the books more times then i can count.
    they run through TREES.
not ontop of them though, edwards not a monkey.
  42. i think all in all, we can stop repeating ourselves over and over again. I think people are just afraid to be disappointed because all in all, we all love these books so much. And we can all agree it has infected us in all possible ways, and disappointment is not an option. But I mean cummon, do you actually think a movie full of pretty people having amazing powers is going to disappoint us? hahah. doubt it much. so just sit back and relax and enjoy the ride. the production team is not out to get us. its their art to portray our imaginations.
  43. I like the tree idea, but what I really don't like is this "twi-hard" thing. That's ridiculous. I've never even heard that before!
  44. okay, i think it all sounds really awsome and like its going to be good wheather they have a treetop scene or not. But what i want to know is, if they are going to have edward tell bella that he is a vampire and demonstrate after he does the treetop stunt then does that mean they are going to cut the parts where he is driving bella home from Port Angels and she figures it out, and also the AMAZINGLY ADORABLE meadow scene?? Please tell me they arn't!?
  45. this movie is going to be awesome even though i don't remember a tree top scene in the book... but still this movie is gonna be great and i can't wait until it comes out.. and you guys have to remember books are always better than the movies... :)
  46. I don't think Rachelle meant that there's a running-on-treetops scene. However, there ARE several instances in which the characters climb a certain tree outside a certain someone's bedroom. That's PROBABLY what she's talking about.

As long as the scene looks good, I'm totally cool with it. I think it'll be awesome.
  47. W-O-W! The Tree-hopping scene sounds so interesting. I bet it will look so amazing on screen. I didn't ever come across a Tree-hopping part in the book... but I can't wait to see it! Oh, and Rachelle will be such a great Victoria! I just can not sit still... because waiting for this great movie is driving me crazy!
  48. Ok first i think Rachelle will be an amazing Victoria. Also i am very happy with the cast of Bella(she is a bit tall though) and the Cullens.

Second, i was a bit twekeed about the tree top thing but now i find it excitng. It would so great if they could keep the fact that Bella already knew that Edward was not human before he admits to it, that would be nice. Also i really hope they can incorapte the Port Angles thing with it, like he shows her after he resuces her or after they eat.
So if the tree top thing is kept i'm for it, just as long as the main plot is kept.
  49. Twi-hard has too many connotations. I'll stick with Twilighter thank you.

I think the fact that they are having this kind of conversation with the fans is pretty damn great. If you think of what happened with Blood and Chocolate, where they twisted it and lost sight of what the book was about, I think we can be relieved that Twilight is turning out this way.

I know there are scenes in the book that some people are REALLY attached to and want to SEE played out in the movie (myself included), but I think we need to focus on the fact that the most important part is how the characters are portrayed. The details are important, but not as much. If they flub a detail it won't BREAK the movie, but if the characters aren't authentic, it will be a major disappointment. I think when we see our favorite characters being played as we know them and love them, we will be more forgiving. I just want those emotions to come across!

I'm not just crazy about Bella and Edward, I want Alice, Jacob, and Emmett to be great! And James and Victoria to be so EVIL and FERAL. Rachel, give it your all, Victoria has lost almost all of her humanity.
  50. The only people I can remember being in the treetops in the Twilight saga were the Quileutes when the lands flooded and they tied their canoes to the treetops. Hopefully it'll be fascinating and exciting even if not going completely by the book.
