‘Twilight’ Co-Star Rachelle Lefevre Talks Treetop Controversy

Rachelle LefevreIf it’s possible to create a riot in cyberspace, “Twilight” star Kristen Stewart may have done just that a few weeks ago, mentioning a scene in the upcoming movie in which “[Robert Pattinson as Edward] throws me over his back, right before he’s going to tell me that he’s a vampire, and then he runs over the treetops.”

Some 1,600 comments later, the debate rages on, over whether the scene strays too far from the book’s depiction. Naturally, when we landed the first-ever on-set “Twilight” interview with Stewart’s co-star Rachelle Lefevre, we had to get her thoughts on whether those treetops would be tweaking “Twilight” too much.

“There’s a scene where Edward reveals to Bella that he is a vampire, and he doesn’t just reveal that he’s a vampire, he reveals all that that encompasses,” Lefevre said of the script. “It’s almost a demonstration, and I think that scene is going to be amazing.”

The actress, who plays the vampire Victoria in the flick, added that the cast has spent the past few weeks training for such stunts. “I haven’t seen all of the stunts specifically, but I did see a setup of that while I was doing my wire work,” she revealed. “I would imagine that [Stewart's statement] is exactly what they are going to do.

“They’re talking like it’s really going to happen,” Lefevre added. “We did a rehearsal at one point where [director] Catherine [Hardwicke] was like, ‘They went up in the tree, but we’re not doing that today.’ I think we are really doing that.”

Before you post your comments below, Lefevre wants you to consider that the treetop-running thing does happen at other times in the “Twilight” series, even if not in the moment when Edward reveals himself.

“I think that there is a scene where a character ends up in a treetop in the book,” she explained. “I don’t want to say who, but there are treetop scenes in the book. But there are also things that are described in the book — the stunts that we are going to be doing, as far as I understand it, are very accurate to what’s in the book.

“You want to put as much action and excitement into the movie as possible,” Lefevre said of the controversy. “So sometimes things get heightened.”

So, twi-hards: What do you think?

  1. Before I begin my own "whining" about the alleged tree top scene, let me just say that as fans of the book we're all concerned it will stray too far from the story we love. A justified concern as that is what happens with most books turn movie (I know of only one that didn't).

Now onto what some may consider 'whining'. My concern comes from them perhaps going too over the top. I also don't recall a single tree top moment in the book. Running through trees, yes, several times. Running on TOP of them? No recollection. If someone can remember, then please share specifics. Who knows, the scene could turn out really cool but I'm afraid of them going too crazy and twisting the story we love into some action movie we don't. In the end we'll just have to see but I'll admit my first reaction was a *wince* and "Oh no."

But, Stephenie Meyer seems thrilled at this point so I'll take my cues from her. I admit to having reservations on the casting of Edward but the promo pics are helping to alleviate that a bit. In the end the real test will come when the fans see the final product in theaters. Despite my concerns I'm still very excited for it. And will no scurry off to read the books. Again. You don't even want to know what number that particular "again" is. ;)
  2. I think what's important here is to understand that the movie is an ADAPTATION of the Twilight book. As a screenwriter you are able to add to and delete from scenes from the book. It's like any other book that has been adapted to the screen (they are never EXACT!) That's what is so great about this. We will be able to see how someone else interprets what has been written in the Twilight books. So, let's just enjoy the fact that we get to see it on screen, and not get so bent out of shape over whether something happens or doesn't happen in the book:-)
  3. i am excited for the movie, dont get me wrong, but...
in what book is there treetop-running?
did i miss while reading each book 10 times?
  4. i am excited for the movie, dont get me wrong, but...

  5. There are no treetops scenes in the books. end of discussion.
People are being petty and ridiculous about this though. Why is everyone on here telling each other to shut up? It's ignorant. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion so stop telling people they can't have theirs. Of course people are going to be upset if their favorite scene isn't in the movie, it's a natural reaction, and if you don't like them doing that then obviously message boards are not the place for you to be. *ahem* you know who i'm talking about.
Let people gripe and moan if they want to, it's a free country and I'm sure once they see the movie they will either a) change their minds and act like they never disliked the decisions or b) never see it again. But once again, it's their choice.
I for one know that If they did cast a non-native american for the part of Jacob I would be hurt and somewhat offended. Maybe thats because I'm indian myself or maybe it's just because I can't see a non-authentic boy playing the character that is so important to the books.
  6. What??? There aren't any "treetop scenes" in Twilight!!!! I've read all the books about 6 times and SM just mentions treetops, she doesn't say that they/other people are IN treetops!!! Curses!!!
  7. I think people just need to calm down just a wee bit. Yes, it wasn't in the book but I'm sure Catherine knows what she's doing. Who knows it might actually look pretty good.
  8. I can't recall any treetop scene in any of the books, but this is a movie and it's a lot more visually exciting than to see them sitting on a black leather sofa, although I'm sure we will get that scene, too.
  9. For all the people freaking out about Jacob, if you've read her website she posted about a casting call so they're obviously putting him in. And as long as they make the story beautiful I don't think there should be any worry about how it turns out. If they get it right, then we should be proud. I mean there could be no movie! So why ravage it when we haven't even seen it?
  10. Ridiculous.
I have read all three books about a million times and there are NO treetop scenes..AT ALL.
Running THROUGH tress, yes. But not on top of them.
    He is not effing Batman!
On the other hand, I think Rachelle will make a great Victoria!
Victoria is one of my favorite characters!
    :)
  11. remeber when they are in the meadow, and he is telling her he is the worlds best predator and he runs around the tree tops showing her his speed.
  12. i was dissapointed at first that Edward reveals that he is a vampire in the treetops...but as long as its good then whatever.
and for everyone complaining that there are no treetop scenes....actually
    yes there are
shorlty after edward tells bella he is a vampire in port angelos i believe...they decide to go to seattle (bcuz Edward said he'll drive Bella there since she didnt want to go to the dance)....and then there were change of plans...and they decided to go to edward's favorite place [[the treetops]]
and there he shows her how he looks like in the sun and tells her how he is very addicted to the scent of her blood.
so therefore....there is a treetop scene.
  13. There are no tree scenes in the book...having read it 35 times...I think I would remember a part about trees.
  14. yeah i actually dont care about treetops.
I JUST WANT THE MOVIE TO COME OUT!!!!!!
  15. I think they are making Twilight into a typical 'special effects' movie!, shame!. As i prefer the whole acting...that's what makes movies classic!.

I mean yeah, he does run THROUGH trees, NOT over!, and Edward doesn't specifically tell her he's a vampire, Bella figures it out and mentions it, to which he doesn't deny. (in the car)

I have no probs with the Actress, i can see her as Victoria, but i hope they don't ruin the movie!.
  16. (didn't post last time *sighs*)

  17. There were no treetop "scenes" in the books as such. But I seem to recall that in New Moon or something that a vampire hiding in/on the trees was HINTED at. Like, they sense something in trees, but look up and its gone. Or there was a rustling in the treetops. Something like that. It may have been Laurent, Victoria or Riley. Not sure.

But heck, it seems like everyone working on the movie has read the books. They KNOW what will work well and what won't.
  18. They have to adapt the book to make it good on screen. Nothing is going to be as is. It's Stephenie's happy, shouldn't we be happy too?
  19. YOU CANT CUT PORT ANGELES THAT RUINS EVERYTHING! ITS IMPORTANT FOR THE OTHER BOOKS! Eclipse needs that place. it cant be cut. also, that scene is AMAZING
  20. ok...i've read twilight 27 times, and no, i am not obsessed, i just have alot of free time and no money to get new books, even though none could be an equal or greater then twilight. Anywayz...in no part of the book, that i don't have memorized, where is there running in the treetops before edward tells bella he's a vamp?? he lifts a car, but thats about it...
  21. I don't remember any part in the book where people are running ON TOP of the trees? I only remember them running through the trees. If possible can someone point out where I missed this in the book, or did it just not happen at all? As to Rachelle playing Victoria, I think she'll do just fine!! Thank you
  22. i still dont remember a tree top scene in the book
the port angeles scene is one of my most favorite parts and one of the most important parts in the book.i also hope that jacob tells bella about the cold ones cause without that scene there is no jacob and with no jacob there is no New Moon
  23. I know reallly....there is definatly NO tree top scene in the books and i too have read them each like a billion times! i read that comment and was totally confused. I know it will be a great movie, but i will never live up to the books. Let's just let all the actors and directors do thier jobs and we can freak out when we have some actual proof of what going on......like i don't know, maybe the actual MOVIE!!!!
  24. I don't mind(much) the changes but i get a little mad when an actor is talking things without knowing. Really knowing. Is better to kept your mouth shut if you don't know what you are talking about.
  25. Okay I have read each book 5 times 5 TIMES!!!!!!!!
When the heck is anyone in a tree top??????????????!!!!!!!!!
    Really where??????
Oh and about that other article with her that vampires have No teeth Ummmm!!!!!!!!! THEY HAVE TEETH!!!
    I am weeping
    for the Twilight script!
  26. Ok, the treetop deal is a bit unrealistic. It's not in the book. But I don't mind it at all, as long as we don't lose the Port Angeles scene. That to me is important. If that's how Bella found out about him being a vampire, that would be upsetting.
I am excited for the film though!
  27. ... OMG EDWARD IS A FREAKING SQUIRREL HAHAHAHHAA... ok enough........ OMG I imagined it *shock*

Not even Batman runs on tree-tops pff.

I've read the books SEVERAL times and NO, nobody runs on tree tops. They may have climbed one once but never ran on them. Jacob climbed Bella's to get into her room once in New Moon, and the war between newborns and the cullens and quileute werewolves well.. we didn't read it through Bella's words but maybe, JUST MAYBE, they ran on tree-tops. But this is Twilight!!! Maybe Midgnight Sun? But it's not published already. ANYWAY, I'm sick of complaining about everything related to Twilight movie stuff. Argh, I'll stop now. I'm ok with the cast and everything but I'm concerned about people who haven't read the books. If this movie ends up as some Extra Bonus part of Moonlight or Superman DVD now on sale, people wouldn't want to read the books :/ and that'd be heartbreaking.

I'll go to sleep now to dream of Edward running on tree tops like a squirrel. Hey Edward pst pst... here's a nut hey heey pst pst.... LOLZ Awwwn Edwardd T___T!!1
  28. Okay, people. Here's the thing. STOP all the "where's the treetops scene?"'s and the "I've read it ... times and I haven't found a treetops scene"'s!! There IS NO TREETOPS SCENE!! There's no ifs ands or buts about it. There isn't one!! So there. Hope that's all cleared up.
  29. Alright, while I do support Rachelle as Victoria and am looking forward to this movie, I just want to state that NEVER was there any tree-top running scenes in any of the books. They wove through the trees on the ground. Just to clarify, I'm not complaining about the scene in the movie, I simply wanted to clear up the misconception.
  30. ok, when edward and bella go into the forest & to the meadow, there is never a point when he's up in the tree tops, or any other part of the the book for that matter. he runs THROUGH them.
and i think it would be a horrible loss if they cut out the Port Angeles scene. its one of my favorites and very pivotal.
& the whole edward TELLING bella hes a vamp . . . i think its so much more enjoyable when bella comes up with it herself after jacobs hints, but i have full faith in the cast and crew!! BEST WISHES!!
  31. You know, i think the movie would be alot better if the actors actually READ THE BOOK. come on, there is no freaking tree top scene ANYWHERE.
  32. Now I'm just confused. Is there or is there not a tree top scene. If it is done well, then i guess i will just deal with it but if they ~%?$$ it up...grrrrrrrrrrr.

And since when have we been called "twi-hards"? Did MTV just invent that and say we've been calling ourselves that? Personally, I ADORE Twilight but i refuse to be called a "twi-hard".

What is that anyway? A mixture of twilight and die-hard? *coughstupidcough*
  33. As much as I am looking forward to the movie, I at least hope it stays true to all main and key points throughout the book. If it accomplishes that, then I find no harm in the addition of any material not included in the book so long as it improves and not detracts from the story and film. Books leave room for the imagination to fill in gaps present in the storyline. Twilight stems from the world of fantasy, so surely we can imagine and accept the possibility of Edward and Bella, at some point, reaching the treetops using vampire abilities, even if we never read about it...but as a devoted twilight fan, I still hope the movie features the series of events and places that turned the book into such a captivating page-turner...the parking lot "phenomenon," First Beach, Port Angeles, the meadow, the Cullen manor, "the game," "the hunt," the ballet studio, the special occasion...all of which can only prove beneficial if incorporated into the movie...
  34. I love the books and I dont really care that they went from running on the ground to running in the treetops. I just think it might make that scene cheesy. Just my opinion. Thats the way i see it in my head at least.
  35. Hey all! I really don't mind the planned "tree-top scene." It has the potential to be really amazing!!! It'll be a great way to showcase Edward's abilities. The only thing that bugs me about it is that I'm not sure if that means the Port Angeles sequence is out. I really liked that part of the book and will miss it being translated into the movie. Besides, there was plenty of action going on there. :( And the other thing that kinda bugged me... Does this mean that Bella doesn't guess right and figure out that Edward is a vampire all on her own? After all, he is "revealing" that he's a vampire to her. And by extension, does that mean she doesn't have that important conversation with Jacob about the legends. haha Sorry for my rant. I still think the movie will be incredible!!!!
  36. I don't remember Edward reveling hes a vampire...doesn't Bella guesses because of Jacob? or is this the meadow part where he breaks the tree branch?
  37. If Edward was in the tree at one point in the book, does that not mean he could possibly run through them??? Okay, so the 'treetops' scene wasn't there.. but the potential was. I think it's good they didn't pull some crap idea out of thin air to go in that scene, like magicking up a car.. or whatever. The trees tie in with the story. AND was there not a casting call, and a person cast, for the part of Jacob Black? This means they intend to have him in the movie, which means he will build his character in some way. It may be the beach scene, just not with the stories. If Edward tells Bella he's a vampire, that doesn't mean the whole entire party is off. Bella just doesn't have to practice her inept flirting, is all.. =]
  38. lol, margie. And I agree with kairi, edward does not reveal he is a vampire. bella talks to jacob who tells her the story of the "cold ones" or "blood-drinkers". bella figures it out from there.

on the cast...i think everyone will do a good job, but jasper really needs to fix his hair.no offense.and i thought emmett had longer hair.

oh well, I know they'll do a good job!
  39. omg!! grrr!! they NEVER run OVER the treetops!!!!!! they run THROUGH trees at great speeds but never over them!!! im cant wait for the movie but i really hope that they dont butcher the whole story!!! STICK TO WHAT STEPH WROTE!!!!!
  40. I don't think it posted last time. *sighs*

Bella talks to Jacob at First Beach, when he tells her the legend of "cold ones" or "blood-drinkers". Bella guesses from there.
  41. When are there people in tree tops??

I really don't care to heighten stuff for the movie. The books were amazinngg (obviously they're best-sellers!)

So why would you heighten it?

    I say don't fix what's not broke.
  42. I think that they could have done a better job with casting Edward. He is supposed to be beautiful beyond comprehension and honestly Rob Pattinson is not attractive at ALL. Kristen is perfect for Bella and the rest of the Cullens fit great too. I just think that they could have found someone at least remotely attractive for Edward.
  43. omg i can't wait for the movie!!! i've read all the books and preordered the 4th one
    i'm obssesed
  44. still cant find the part with tree tops in the books but idk maybe im just missing it..
i really really hope that they dont cut out the scene with Edward and bella driving back from port angeles!
    :sighs:
and PLEASE do not skip over the Port Angeles scene!its one of the best scenes in the book!

everyone reading this i just hope you read the twilight book by Stephenie Meyers before you watch the movie so you can get the whole "twilight effect"
  45. I still don't like it.
    :/
    Sorry.
The cast, yeah, I pretty much like; all the members seem really committed to producing the best movie possible.
    But this tree thing...
    What the heck?
I'm just frightened that the movie will be out of sequence (like A Series of Unforunate Events).
I realize that this is a movie and that certain parts must be dramatized; however, I hope that it doesn't go TOO astray, if you get what I mean.

And if Jacob doesn't tell Bella what Edward is, then how will that bond form and how do they intend to create New Moon?

    It just worries me.
    :/
  46. There are a few tree scenes: Jacob coming in through Bella's window in New Moon, and others are hinted at where Edward was watching her in the trees...

I'm very excited for the movie...BUT I really wish that actress would actually read the books. It's very obvious that she has not... and if she's going to be taking on something as big as this where there are so many passionate fans, she needs to know the stories inside and out.... Yes the movie will have different scenes...and that's okay with me. But the actors shouldn't make statements about them being accurate to the book if they've never read it!
  47. Thank-you...i think that exact same thing! I think thaty should take all the lines from the booka nd just make that the movie! ...but i guess it would be too long. Still! When you see the tree-hopping scene, that doesnt seem Edward at all. So the thing with Jacob telling Bella about the Cold Ones, is the best way-to-go!
  48. This is so dumb. I've only read Twilight three times (but within seven months) and NEVER do they mention treetops. Apparently Rachel LeFevre has never read Twilight. Seeing as she is a character in the upcoming film, I am disappointed.

But then again, Catherine Hardwicke also should have read the book. If she did and she is still allowing the treetop stunt, then that is ridiculous.
  49. One more thing I forgot to mention:
    Leave Robert (Edward) alone.
He's perfect for the part, and, quite honestly, I don't see why everyone keeps saying "he's not attractive enough".

In reality, only Stephenie knows EXACTLY what Edward looks like.
And she likes Robert playing Edward, so I trust HER opinion on HER created character.
    So stop dissing Robert.

    Thank you.
    :]
  50. There is a tree top scene in New Moon where Jacob ends up outside Bell's window. He is swinging from the tree top scratching at her window before he swings into her room. That is the only tree top scene that I can think of, but who cares. I think the movie is gonna be great!!
