‘Twilight’ Co-Star Rachelle Lefevre Talks Treetop Controversy

Rachelle LefevreIf it’s possible to create a riot in cyberspace, “Twilight” star Kristen Stewart may have done just that a few weeks ago, mentioning a scene in the upcoming movie in which “[Robert Pattinson as Edward] throws me over his back, right before he’s going to tell me that he’s a vampire, and then he runs over the treetops.”

Some 1,600 comments later, the debate rages on, over whether the scene strays too far from the book’s depiction. Naturally, when we landed the first-ever on-set “Twilight” interview with Stewart’s co-star Rachelle Lefevre, we had to get her thoughts on whether those treetops would be tweaking “Twilight” too much.

“There’s a scene where Edward reveals to Bella that he is a vampire, and he doesn’t just reveal that he’s a vampire, he reveals all that that encompasses,” Lefevre said of the script. “It’s almost a demonstration, and I think that scene is going to be amazing.”

The actress, who plays the vampire Victoria in the flick, added that the cast has spent the past few weeks training for such stunts. “I haven’t seen all of the stunts specifically, but I did see a setup of that while I was doing my wire work,” she revealed. “I would imagine that [Stewart's statement] is exactly what they are going to do.

“They’re talking like it’s really going to happen,” Lefevre added. “We did a rehearsal at one point where [director] Catherine [Hardwicke] was like, ‘They went up in the tree, but we’re not doing that today.’ I think we are really doing that.”

Before you post your comments below, Lefevre wants you to consider that the treetop-running thing does happen at other times in the “Twilight” series, even if not in the moment when Edward reveals himself.

“I think that there is a scene where a character ends up in a treetop in the book,” she explained. “I don’t want to say who, but there are treetop scenes in the book. But there are also things that are described in the book — the stunts that we are going to be doing, as far as I understand it, are very accurate to what’s in the book.

“You want to put as much action and excitement into the movie as possible,” Lefevre said of the controversy. “So sometimes things get heightened.”

So, twi-hards: What do you think?

  1. ok. there was no tree top scene.
HOWEVER i do agree that this movie will be brilliant non the less. everyone really should just be happy that a movie is coming out at all.
  2. wow!im so exited about this movie! WOOP!
  3. Ok, i have to say that i am pretty excited for this movie...who am i kidding, I CANT WAIT!!!!!
But... those people who are whining about the treetop seen, get over it, we are luck to even get a movie from this wonderful series. good Luck to the movie!! also i cant wait for the fourth book, or Edwards version of Twilight.
    Byes!
  4. Annie, i aggre with u too, if this chick is gonna b in the movie, she needs to actually read the book... maybe she got the part where Edward was running with Bella in his arms mixed up with the scenes from the movie...and maybe they are doing it on the treetops so we can actually see it and enjoy it rather than seeing a bunch trees whiz by when we are supposed to be enjoying the vampire-ish characteristics of the movie.
  5. Okay so i have read the twilight books a couple times and none of them mention anything about tree tops. I think that this will pull away from the movie. You will be missing a key factor if you leave the Port Angeles scene is a very vital part to the book, as is the car ride home for them.
  6. so i think that they should just keep the movie as close to the book as possible. i think that we have a right to say how we feel and what we, as huge fans, want to see or not see in the movie. so will everyone stop saying "well we're lucky they're doing it at all." i know that most die hard twilighters would rather them not make a movie at all if they are going to ruin the story we all love so much. i think that the producers and scree writers should listen to what we have to say since we will be where they will get most of their support and profit for this movie.
  7. however, jumping from tree to tree would be rather like Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon....i love that movie but im not sure i would like to see Edward become a master at martial arts. I'm giving the cast and crew full creative license here, but please...anything but that.
  8. I dunno if anyone has said this yet, (I'm too lazy to read thru all of these posts...)
But I'm sure we all know by now that there was NO TREETOP RUNNING in the books...

However, in the "Esme" SCRIPT SIDES, there was a "treetop jumping" scene. Which I think is what Rachelle L. was referring to. In context, the treetop jumping occurs when Edward and Bella go to the Cullens house for the 1st time. She says shes not afraid of him, and then he tackles her, they jump off his "balcony" (don't know where the balcony came from) and into the treetops. Jump, jump, jump; they share a beautiful panoramic view.

Anyway, just pointing out that this was probably where the treetop stuff is gonna come into play. And about Port Angeles - if the script sides are any indication of whats gonna be in the movie, then that scene WILL be in there. It's in Jessica's SS. Ok. Thats all. :)
  9. Okay- okay- people. There may not be a specific scene in the book that deals with them running across the treetops- but who cares?? Who even knows if that scene will make the editing floor and into the movie?- and the scene will most likely be hugely different than we imagine it might be. You can do a lot with CGI these days. But I do agree with Marlin Brando- I hope it doesn't turn Kitchy,-movies with action scenes like Crouching Tiger or The Matrix- put into a movie like Twilight would have a "been there done that" kind of feel. That wouldn't be cool. But who knows?? Maybe they filmed this scene in a way that doesn't feel cliche'. I just hope for Stephanie's sake they don't make this movie into something manufactured- a movie with all the special effects and no content- a straight to dvd type movie. I think the dialogue in the movie should be as crisp, smooth and hypnotizing as it is in the books. If you take the magic out of the words and the complexity of the plot- the outcome could be a movie that reads something like a b-movie horror flick with a romance thrown in. So those are my only fears- and my worrying about the final product doesn't make me a complainer. Hopefully. If I did complain it would only be about some of the casting choices-like picking someone who was actually blonde for Rosalie would have been smarter,(mostly because blonde doesn't look natural on Nikki Reed) and someone more attractive for Emmett.( He looks a bit cro-magnon with that forehead to me) Other than that I have come around to the idea of the actors that have been chosen to portray Bella and Edward. Reaser isn't 100% right for Esme- but she might be able to pull it off- her character really isn't present that much- so as long as they don't put her in that awful dress she is wearing in the promo pics, she will be okay in the film for me. Speaking of the promo pics- who the heck decided to dress some of them like snow-bunnies and the other half like Oxford students?? - Go with one theme. Seriously that wardrobe stylist needs to be fired- the pics themselves are decent- but they couldn't have done something with the background?? Sorry for that inane rant- but really folks- I could come up with promo shots better than that!! I just hope they hire someone with more talent to do the publicity poster- the possibility for it to be lame seems about 50/50. ..But, in the end all of that doesn't really matter- just as long as the film is great- because if it is- the Twilight series will become the next phenomenon rival to Harry Potter.
  10. UNBELIEVABLE! Tree tops!? Really? I know its hard for a movie to turn out like the book but maybe this Director oughta get some ideas from Stephen King who's had better success at it. Makes me sick to know that this awesome book series is being re-written into a script by an over excited 13 year old. What's next? Fireballs are shot from Emmet's eyes and Rosalie gains the power of a "Medusa" like creature? Somone stop it now before it goes to far!
  11. !#$#$^&(#*&(*&(*#*&$HJDBF@*(^#$*$&$(* ...haha spaz.
  12. someone agrees with me...i feel sooooooo loved.
  13. please vote for my name...or take back your mink and hollanderize it for some other dame!!!!! WELL WOULDN'T YOU??? VOTE FOR TDVSS!!! wiggitywack...you are my ultimate favorite person. I love you with all my heart and soul!!!! JOIN TEAM TDVSS NOW!!!!
  14. I think this whole tree tops thing is fine. I read the books over and over all the time because all I want is to leave my life and go into another persons life, I never get tired of the storys, but I think that if they add scenes that werent in the book then great its just another daydream for me! Every scene and chapter every word thats spoken in the books are in my daydreams and so I really don't mind extra scenes. =] It's just something new for me to think about =] I read all the time but I have never read a book that even comes close to comparing with the Twilight series =] My parents eventually started to hate the books because I'm always reading them =] When the movie comes out i bet their wont be any open seats in the theater =]
About the cast, I think they are really good, its definately impossibe to get the right people to play them. There is only a couple of minor things that I hope get fixed, Jasper's hair of course, I do think that Carlisle looks too old, I think Rosalie should have just a tiny bit darker blonde hair. And I think they all need to be paler. I doubt the movie will do the books justice but I hope they are good enough =]
  15. U STUPID!
  16. I can't wait for the movie, I have read the series so many times and I don't rimember there EVER being a tree top sceen. And Bella questions Edward on his being a vampire at diner after he saves her from those guys when she gets lost and Edward confesses that he is. But when he shows her how he goes THROUGH the forest nnot OVER it is when he also shows her what hapens when he is in direct sunlight not that he is a vampire. Personally I think that its going too far from the novel.
  17. The book series was fantastic. The actual actors that have been chosen for the movie SUCK!!! Who ever did the casting and picking of the actors must have never read the books. The way the books describe the characters certainly have been undermined by the choice of actors chosen. I don't even know if I will go see the movie. So... the issue over the tree tops won't even matter.. an ugly Edward will ruin the whole movie.
  18. I can not believe what I am reading here! Where did these directors, ect.. come from? Have they READ the series!!!!? Apparently not. I can not believe Stephanie Meyer would let somebody butcher her perfect dreams she has so graciously shared with us thru the book series. Everything I have read seen and heard about this movie so far is incorrect. READ THE BOOKS and follow the way the story truely goes. Bella knows Edward is a vampire BEFORE they get to the meadow where they go THROUGH the trees AFTER they have already been IN the meadow. Give us all a break - If you can not make the movie like the books read DON'T BOTHER! Who will want to watch the movie - it will not be Stephenie Meyer's story. The actors that I have seen choosen so far deffintely do not fit the characters discribed in the book. Need I say more.... by the way Stephenie,-- I want to read the "adult" version Stephanie. --
  19. THANK YOU slim! finally someone gets it. everyone is all like "so who cares if they change it a little bit" no one understands that the scene they plan to cut out and replace is CRUCIAL to the story line. so yeah, i love you for saying that.
  20. I will have to agree with all the supporters of this movie. we are absolutely lucky that they are even MAKING it. i am beyond ecstatic! i think we all have to think of this movie as its own production, we won't like it at all if we keep trying to compare to something as amazing as what stephenie meyer has created. good luck to the cast!
  21. umm, why are twilight fans so picky? I mean, GOSH ppl! It's the first movie!!! nothing is going to be EXACTLY like the book, there might be some things that are different..that's why books and movies aren't the same and you should never do ur book project based on a movie that had a book, i should know. All i'm saying is that, just appreciate the fact that they're even DOING a TWILIGHT MOVIE.then just let it go, the movie will be what the movie is. and there's nothing us twilight fans can do, all we can do is hope it rulz! GO EDWARD!!! WOOOHOO!!!!

"You make me feel like a villain in a melodrama- twirling my mustache while i try and steal some poor girl's virtue."
  22. Its not going to be exactly like the book, i mean we know this from harry potter.
But i dont really mind i think its going to be great.
I really dont think they'll change it too much. Twilight fans(w/e we're called)are really serious, i would know lol. If i were working on the movie i would be scared to change anything too much lol.
  23. treetop scene what treetop scene. never heard of a treetop scene in the books, neither about a person being left in a tree either.
  24. Okay, honestly, I have to admit that I was a little bit worried when I heard about this. But hearing Rachelle talk about it, I'm more confident in how this will work. Besides, some things just work better in movies than they do in books. It's all about keeping the audience entertained. In books, you can read the details, but in the movies you have the visual so they have to make it as visually appealing as possible. For anyone who's read the Harry Potter series, for instance, all of us know that they definitely left a lot out and changed things around in the movies, but the movies are fantastic. I've no doubt that Twilight is going to be brilliant as well. I can't wait!
  25. i wish they could play the whole book as it is but that not going to happen.. i'm just glad they are sticking to the book as close as possible.... but common girls, please get your facts straight before getting interviewed!!
  26. ok srry. but there is know tree top scene in the 'Twilight' book. i've read the series 2 times already so yah....
and they run through the forest not over it! come on ppl. read the book over again... srry
but let's just see how the movie comes out i cant wait!

    Twi-Hards :)
i idin't know we were called that..
  27. I CANT WAIT FOR THE MOVIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

just hope they get the scenes right..

    go twi-hard haha
weird name for us i like the Twilighters a liitle

but again the twi-hards is kewl 2
  28. I agree with Annie
i read the series many times and unless i missed something there is not treetop running
  29. Alright, this is in response to a very early comment by a fan named Amy. "People have got to stop whining" -- while I understand why this debate may get tiring, I think it's important on several levels to let MTV (and hopefully the directors) know that some people aren't happy with how they're deciding to do the movie, namely the scene.

First off, where in the world is LeFevre getting her "it happened in the books" argument? As a fan who owns all three books and has read them an insanely large number of times, I have yet to see this scene occur, at any point. If I have missed it, give me a page number and a book title and I'll be more than happy to apologize. Until then, I'm calling bullsh!t all over Miss LeFevre's remark. (That said, I think she'll do really well in the movie. Good luck, girl! Have fun and make us fans proud! ^^ And that goes out to all the actors/actresses, especially Edward and Bella. You both have big shoes to fill, but I think that if anyone in this world can become one of the most popular couples of this decade, it is you two. Get going so that I can see Bella and Edward in the flesh!)

Secondly, if the directors realize just how large a fan base is already out there for the books (which it sounds like they do), they'll also realize how important it'll be to stick to the book as closely as they can. Tiptoeing through treetops feels like a blatant slap at the story.

Most importantly (in my mind), Bella's self-realization of the truth is gone with this single scene. Yes, it may be more impressive than the book; but it was important that Jacob be the one to tell her--read the series later to find out--it was important for Bella to realize it on her own, it was important for Bella to come to grips and make her decision on whether to continue the "relationship" (such as it was at the time) on her own, and I sincerely doubt that Bella will be able to do that while whizzing past treetops. Hell, she nearly passed out the first time she ran with Edward! What in the world makes people think that she'll be able to comprehend anything besides her churning stomach the first time she runs with Edward?

And what happens to Jacob? That was his big part in the book, telling Bella about the "cold ones." Why bother getting a Jacob if they're going to get rid of his big moment? (I love the actor they got to play Jacob, by the way. He's absolutely, 100% perfect, in my eyes. *swoons* *recovers* *clears throat* *flushes slightly* Moving on...)

So that was a very long comment to a very long debate, one that I don't see disappearing in the next few months. I bet the publicists for the movie are over the moon about all the free advertising this movie is getting already with all the fan responses. ^^ I can't wait to see the movie, and I hope that they keep as close to the book as possible; if they don't, I think they might have a mob on their hands... With torches and pitchforks...^^
  30. Hmmm. I am SO excited for the movie! I can't say I agree with all of the casting choices, but I guess all we can do is hope everyone does a good job to make us forget how ugly they are. (ahem, Rosalie, Carlisle and Jasper who are not natural blondes. It looks too fake in my opinion.)But there was no running in trees, but I think if they execute it correctly it will be cool. As long as they stay pretty close to the plot.
  31. I am pretty sure there are NO treetop scenes in the book and I absorbed allllll of it!!!! Not letting it go!!!
  32. I really don't care about the treetops. I'm just am sooooo excited about the movie!! Can't wait till december.
P.S. Just wanted to say.... I really hate Jacob and I wouldn't mind at all if he was killed off. Actually.. I'm hoping for it. He is just really annoying and keeps hitting on Bella and tearing Bella and Edward apart!!!!!URGHHHHHH!!!!!
  33. JEEEZZZZ people have to get over the fact of the whole treee top thing its really annoying if you dont like the tree top scene then you know what dont watch the damn movie okay. im sure that there are enough fans that are willing to watch it even with the scene there. people fighting over a scene that will probably be over before anyone nows it is just so damn childish so get over it no one really cares if you dilike the scene....its just a scene....and if your gonna trash the writers its better off if you didn't cause they'll do what ever they want without your opinion. so it doesn't matter what you think at all. i personally trust stephenie meyer in every decision in the making of this movie and if she was okay ith the scene than great but if not well she used her better judgement so there. get over and move on! because the movie is gona rock whether you think so or not.so HA!
  34. who is playing jacob?????????????
  35. you need to READ THE BOOK before making/staring in a movie!ther is no tree top scene! Bella finds out that Edward is a vampire from Jacob not Edward! Edward confirms this fact on the way back to Bella's house while driving her home after a trip to the city Bella takes with her friends. GET YOUR FACTS RIGHT, READ THE BOOK!!
  36. I don't see what the big deal is...I don't remember a treetop scene either but i'm not going to pick at all the creative decisions of the director or writer. If you've read any of Stephenie Meyer's comments on her site you would know that she's turned down a movie offer before because she didn't like it, so obviously she likes this one and so it must be pretty good! I can't wait to actually see the movie and judge for myself though!
  37. I think this is an awesome idea i would be stocked 2!!! i mean they are both brilliant actors!!! And not to mention the hype, im sure if they didnt get it that good i wouldnt be very happ!!!So go Rob and Kristen this movie will be hacken awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  38. I HATE MARLIN BRANDO!!!
    THEIR COMMENTS MAKE NOOOO SENSE
but i mean seriously...i bet they didnt even READ the books! come on really....this is for FANS only!!!!

    peace
  39. I'm fine with a treetop scene, honestly. But if it does make them cut the Port Angeles scene, that's a major scene in the book. Other than that, what's the big deal? I'm sure they'll do wonders with the movie, I certainly adore the whole cast and personally think they will all perform brilliantly. And as for Lefevre incorrectly saying there was a treetop scene in the book, so what? Everyone makes mistakes, and maybe she was referring to when Edward was watching Bella in the tree, or something along those lines.
I can say though, that I'm anxiously awaiting the movie and will be there the night it's released!
  40. Hello fans, my 14 year old daughter and I have read all of the books....twice. It took some urging, but she got me & my BFF from high school hooked! As for all of the controversy regarding the tree top scene, my daughter and I don't mind it at all, unless it replaces the Port Angeles scene. (Pivotal part of the book - should NOT be axed!!!)My daughter reminded me of the part in the book when Bella was reading outside. She said later on you find out Edward was in a tree watching. Anyway, we are excited about the movie (even if it deviates slightly - that's showbiz), and we think the cast will do a fantastic job. We, like other twi-hards, will be at the movie premiere the night it opens, and might just see it twice!
  41. oaky Chantel_n_Jordan, no where in any book of the twilight series does it say that edward was in a tree watching. i've read all three books about six times. and it never says anything close to that. okay that's all. just thought that you should know.
  42. Are they really leaving out the Port Angeles scene? I hope thats not true because thats a very important part of the book. I am also with the people who believe this movie is going to be great. Definitely not as good as the books, but props to the producers and actors for trying so hard to please us twi-hards
  43. ok there is only one time when someone is in a tree and thats the part where jacob climbs up the tree to get into bellas window... but still it doesn't bother me that they are goning to but that part in the movie... the movie is still going to be great... so lets just all hope for the best..
  44. Hahaha, boy someone read these books with an imagination. They run THROUGH the trees. Not ON the trees, silly hollywood folk. I love, love, LOVE the books but I have mixed feelings toward the movie already. Hopefully it goes well.......
  45. Okay, so basically, I'm a die-hard twilight series fan just like about everybody else on here. Even though I'd hate to see the movie me ruined- were not stupid or illiterite, never in the book does it mention anybody on tree tops - I'm still going to watch the movie. You know it wouldn't hurtfor once if SOMEONE would just do it right the FIRST TIME. You know, step it up a little? What's the point of making a movie you know 1,000,000 plus people are going to watch, if you don't get it right? I mean I understand people may edit the story for time purposes of the movie, but I think it's ridiculously stupid to change a very imporatant climax in the story, ESPECIALLY the part where Edward reveals his secret to Bella. Of course that's not in my power what will be in the movie, but consider this a confirmation from just another fan. Your movie will be no where near as good as the book. Basically because stubbornly enough, you "movie making junkies" still think it's necessary to change the plot of a story to make it "cooler" when your missing the point of making the movie in the first place. You want to give the visual to the already "mindfully informed" and the half-ass story to those who sadly enough will not read the books before watching the movie. Just something to consider, I'm being plainly forward. Stephenie Meyer is the most amazing author I've ever come across. That's a big thing for me to say since I could say I've read over maybe 100 books in my short 15 years of a life so far. It's a shame that such a brillant story is going to be ruined. I really wish people had the patience and motivation to actually read the books. I don't see this movie having very good reviews. I'm already extremely dissapointed.
  46. P.S. Nobody affiliated in the making of the movie will probably read my comments but anyways, the Twilight Series is a brilliantly original love story. It takes a tragic scenario of right and wrong and destiny's fight and twists it into and beautiful action/suspense fantasy. AND IT'S GOING TO BE RUINED! RUINED RUINED RUINED! I mean TREETOPS??!?! WTF! Excuse my language but seriously?? Come on just stick to the already brilliantly written story. Then again it's not too unbelievable that movie makers are egotistical enough to think the story will BE any better by there STUPID editing. Ugh, I'm getting off. This movie is really frustrating me. I don't think you guys exactly grasp how pivitol the making of these books has been for all it's readers. It's very sickening.

  49. I think this movie is going to be amazing.
Sometimes you have to deal with that extra stuff directors put in to enjoy the movie.
Catherine [from what I've seen so far] is a fabulouse director and I doubt she will completely switch around the story line.
This is dipite the fact, of course, that Stephenie had some contract thinga ma bob with the producers that they couldn't do certain things.
This will all be fine and turn out absolutely spectacular in the end; I am quite certain.
  50. You people are .....
    just enjoy the movie
be gratful they actually put in a movie , sorry to be rude to people but you people are idoits if they are actually giving you information about the movie and whats happening , The actors are awesome , they are keeping in it in a reasonable level of a Twilight decent movie , I read the book alot of times and they are keeping it tied to the book , the treetop thing get real! ! !
If there is a part or not what with it , they are trying to make the movie good ,what else can i say , for real, it is going to be great if you guys don't like don't watch it , if you guys don't appreciate the work , then just shut up nobody needs idiot critisism , so please stop putting .... bad comments
