‘Twilight’ Co-Star Rachelle Lefevre Talks Treetop Controversy

Rachelle LefevreIf it’s possible to create a riot in cyberspace, “Twilight” star Kristen Stewart may have done just that a few weeks ago, mentioning a scene in the upcoming movie in which “[Robert Pattinson as Edward] throws me over his back, right before he’s going to tell me that he’s a vampire, and then he runs over the treetops.”

Some 1,600 comments later, the debate rages on, over whether the scene strays too far from the book’s depiction. Naturally, when we landed the first-ever on-set “Twilight” interview with Stewart’s co-star Rachelle Lefevre, we had to get her thoughts on whether those treetops would be tweaking “Twilight” too much.

“There’s a scene where Edward reveals to Bella that he is a vampire, and he doesn’t just reveal that he’s a vampire, he reveals all that that encompasses,” Lefevre said of the script. “It’s almost a demonstration, and I think that scene is going to be amazing.”

The actress, who plays the vampire Victoria in the flick, added that the cast has spent the past few weeks training for such stunts. “I haven’t seen all of the stunts specifically, but I did see a setup of that while I was doing my wire work,” she revealed. “I would imagine that [Stewart's statement] is exactly what they are going to do.

“They’re talking like it’s really going to happen,” Lefevre added. “We did a rehearsal at one point where [director] Catherine [Hardwicke] was like, ‘They went up in the tree, but we’re not doing that today.’ I think we are really doing that.”

Before you post your comments below, Lefevre wants you to consider that the treetop-running thing does happen at other times in the “Twilight” series, even if not in the moment when Edward reveals himself.

“I think that there is a scene where a character ends up in a treetop in the book,” she explained. “I don’t want to say who, but there are treetop scenes in the book. But there are also things that are described in the book — the stunts that we are going to be doing, as far as I understand it, are very accurate to what’s in the book.

“You want to put as much action and excitement into the movie as possible,” Lefevre said of the controversy. “So sometimes things get heightened.”

So, twi-hards: What do you think?

  1. Melanie Says:

Can’t wait till the movie, I think Rachelle’s gonna play a really cool Victoria. :D

  2. Ann Says:

I can’t wait to see it!

I am so looking forward, they are pretty much doing the right thing! :)

  3. Annie Says:

Ok, where in the book is someone in a tree top? I don’t recall that ever happening. Did I some how miss it both times that i read through the series?

  4. Annie Says:

When are they ever in a tree top? I have read the series twice and can not remember that ever happening.

  5. Amy Says:

I could care less if there’s a treetop scene. It’s gonna look great, and the movie will be amazing!

People have got to stop whining!

  6. Linda Says:

I can’t believe people are flipping out so much over the tree tops thing. Get a grip, people. Twilight fans are so lucky in how close the movie is staying to the book, why are people nitpicking over something so trivial? Does being in tree tops change the story in any fundamental way? No. People should read up on the film adaptation of “Confessions of a Shopaholic” to see how much COULD be changed in a book-turned-movie. We should consider ourselves very lucky!

  7. Annie Says:

The movie sounds sooo freaking awesome. I don’t know if I can make it to December.

  8. Carly Says:

The movie sounds so freaking awesome. I cannot wait. And for those who are worried about the movie straying from the book - I’ve seen the sides, and it’s very loyal to the novel. Linda is right, we’re very lucky.

  9. Cara Says:

I don’t think fans a flipping about the tree top running per say. It’s more the fact that Rachelle said a similar scene is in the books, when it most definitely isn’t. I think the scene will be great personally, but she should get her facts straight before she starts saying stuff like that.

  10. Annie Says:

Thank you Cara…that is all I am saying…she was wrong in her statement. I have read the sides and am very excited about the movie. I think they are going to do a great job.I am fine withe the 2 tree top scenes being in the movie, I am just annoyed that the actress has her facts wrong.

  11. gabe Says:

i have read these books so many times it unreal i cant wait for the movie!! there is one thing though, i dont think there was a trrtop thing in Twilight.

  12. Angel Says:

That’s ridiculous Annie. Quit being confrontational. If you’re so fine with the tree top scenes why are you complaining about it? It’s not going to be the exact same as the book, people need to accept that. It happens with any book that is turned into a movie. Maybe she read the books and mistook a scene in the book for having tree tops in it. Not everyone receives the same mental pictures when they are reading a passage that has action involved in it. Even so, who really cares? We should be grateful she even agreed to be in the movie & that she decided to try to clear up the tree top matter. I wish some of the fans would up just shut up and let the producers do their jobs and cast the actors. Kudos to the fans that are backing the producers for even creating the movies.

  13. Bloodsucking Leech Says:

I would like all of the people connected to the movie to know that there are a majority of us out here who back the movie production 100%-the casting especially. What they look like is secondary to the talent. Rob Pattinson happens to excell in both. All we want from the movie is to make us believe. Take us away from here and be the Cullens in the flesh. So, please do not take what the nay-sayers spit out to heart. We are with you!

  14. Angel Says:

Not to mention. Maybe the treetop scene really is in the book and we just mistook it as something else. Crap Happens.

  15. Kate Says:

Yeah…I don’t recall anyone actually being in a treetop, just running through trees but on the GROUND lol.

Oh well, if it’s done in a way that’s not too corny and fits and looks cool, I can handle it…I think.

  16. M. Heart Says:

I absolutely agree with Angel and Bloodsucking Leech! People are so ignorant these days! Can we all please just be grateful and excited. This movie is going to be HUGE and all the negative fans are truly not representing. So what that there is a scene we didn’t know of. Doesn’t anyone like the element of surprise. Most of us will sit there and scan the movie as if we’re reading the book. It will be nice to see something different, tree top and school field-trip included! It’s enough that awful fans make Robert [Edward] feel like he’s not worthy, but now the production team isn’t good enough either? Please, get over yourselves! I agree that Rachelle is wrong about that scene being in the book. But maybe when Edward runs through the woods with Bella he’s jumping around too. Keep in mind that Bella had her eyes closed 95% of the time and was dizzy and all that. Maybe it happened on the way to the baseball game too and we didn’t know. Maybe that’s where Laurent,James, and Victoria were before stepping onto the field. Just shut up about it and act like an actual fan!

  17. Isabella Says:

I believe the essence of our beloved Twilight will be protected. Though things may differ from the book slightly, only those of us who have read the book will know the differnce, what about the hundreds of thousands of people who have not read the book that will hopefully see the movie? The thrill has to be there for people with no pre-concived notions of the story we all love so well.

  18. Ann Says:

Hmmm, I guess maybe being in the treetops will be a cinematic thing. Obviously not in the books, but maybe its refering to when Edward breaks a tree with his hands, maybe he’s really good at climbing them too? I just hope they don’t have them flying or anything.

  19. Eada Says:

Why are people freaking out?!? You cant expect the film to be the exact same as the book..they have to make scenes more exciting and actiony!!
i love the books and i cant wait 2c the movie its gonna be unreal!!

  20. Maeia Says:

Oh god everyday is so looooooooooong!!!!
Ok twilighters get over it, some treetops is not gonna be the end of the world and surely won’t end your love for twilight, so please stop bitching and be glad and joyful that we’re having Twilight turn into a movie. Not long it wasn’t even solid, and now they’re filming!!!

  21. Zuleyka Says:

First off, having read the sides of some of the script, I think Kristen was refering to a scene when she meets the rest of the Cullens. And I think that what many Twilighters were skeptic about isn’t the fact that they’re in the treetops, it’s the fear of losing the PIVOTAL Port Angeles storyline (which isn’t that long but is VERY IMPORTANT)!!! Oh, and I don’t know where Rachell is getting her info because there is no treetop scene in any of the books!!! But I will say this, I LOVE THE CAST AND HAVE VERY HIGH HOPES FOR THE FILM!!!!!!!!!
    XD

  22. Maj Says:

I still can’t believe Twilight is being made into a movie and will be out in a few months!

I can’t wait to see the actors and actresses protray my favorite fictional characters.

    and you have to remember
No movie is exactly like a book. so bring on the treetops!

  23. twilightapples Says:

i think the tree tops part is fine. i read the part of the script for it and it sounds really cool! i think it ties seamlessly into the story

  24. Runswithvampires Says:

My intial reaction to the tree tops scene was shock, then anger. But now, I’m more used to it. Hopefully it will be awesome. Though, I have no idea what scene Rachel is referring to, where Edward runs across tree tops.

  25. Cara Says:

i really dont know understand what you ‘angel’ are going on about, clearly you misread what annie and i were saying. we are rather excited for the tree top scene, and especialy the movie in general. it will be very exciting and the sides for the movie are excellent, as are the actors. we were just clearing up the fact that there is no tree top running in books at all, its easily verified. we are not complaining about the changes to the movie, we were more concerned that we had missed a vital scene in the books. neither are we bad-mouthing the produces or anything like that. your exaggerating a lot. and your rudeness is unappreciated. comments are here for everyone to voice and share their opinion, not to be harrased.

  26. Cara Says:

Unfortunately my previous post doesn’t appear to have worked. if it does after this, i apoligise for the double post. but i would just like to say, that the comments that ‘angel’ and ‘m heart’ made to, what i feel were directed to me and annie were inappropriate and extremely rude. you exagerrated what we said, or clearly misinterpreted it. we were merely clearing up the matter that there was no tree top scene, worried that we has somehow missed a pivotal scene in the books, that is all. we were in no way defaming the casting directors, producers actors, screenwriters or anything. that comment is ridiculous. i feel i can say that i, and on annies part, we are very happy. we are fan, and, of course, we are very excited for the movie, and are very happy with the decisions that have been made. the tree top scene sounds excellent. comments are for people to share and voice their opinons, whether you agree or not. rudeness and unwillingness to understand is unacceptable.

  27. Kat Says:

They run in the tree tops? that doesn’t happen ANYWHERE in the books… I don’t mind as long as it’s awsome, but if it’s done badly then they’re gonna have alot of unhappy fans!

  28. CARLY Says:

I HAVE READ TWILIGHT 4 TIMES… AND I AM ABSOLUTLEY POSITIVE THAT STEPHENIE MEYER WOULD NEVER MAKE ANYONE FLY OVER TREETOPS.

so what im trying to say is..

    LEFEVRE READ THE BOOK!

  29. Lauren Says:

Ok I’m all for the treetop thing… movies aren’t going to be exactly like the book. Give it a chance and give the actor/producers/directors a chance. Two where did all of you read some of the script or sides of the script? Can you tell me where to find it ’cause i want to know/see!!??!! And thrid, maybe, like ‘M. Heart’ says, maybe the treetop was when shes was on his back and he eyes were closed.

  30. Birdie Says:

OMG!! where in the book does edward run over tree tops and is certainly not before he tells her hes a vampire!! I’M CONFUSED!?!?!?!?!? i don’t remember this happening and i’ve read that part 5 times at least!!

  31. Mrs J. Cullen Says:

i cant recall ever reading about a tree top scene in any of the twilight books. i have read all three books 12 times each so i think i would remmeber. all this aside, im glad the movie won’t be exactley like the book, becasue if it was there would be no need for people who dont know what the books are like to ever read them, and no matter how good the film is nothing could ever compare to actually reading the twilight series. I want the movie to be accurate, just not a word for word rip off of the amazing books =)

~Blond might have more fun but Edward prefers brunettes~

  32. Shannon Says:

Sorry Rach, no one ever goes up into tree tops during the movie. Think she could be counting when Jacob climbs the tree to come into Bella’s room in NM?

Either way, I’m a “twi-hard” (I had no idea we were called that) and I’m kind of intrigued by the tree tops scene.

But seriously. There’s no tree scene.

  33. Nina Says:

UGH! IF YOU READ THE SIDES THERE IS NO TREE TOP SCENE! There is a scene where they jump INTO a tree..but no running along in the trees…godd..People took KS’s quote and went freaking nuts…

  34. cordelia Says:

LOVED IT! EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE CHANGING IT I STILL THINK ITS GREAT!

  35. katie Says:

Ummmmm, I’ve read these books four times each and trust me, NO ONE is ever in a tree……jeeeezzzz!

  36. Fenris Says:

Who cares, really. I mean, they’re making the movie and they’re staying very close to the book, we should be happy. I still have a problem realizing that they’ve started filming!
I think Rachel will be an awesome Victoria, best wishes to her and the rest of the cast :)

  37. tuz(e) Says:

I have read the series 8 times. =] and there has never been a vampire running on the tree tops. I dont really understand how that could happen. Running through the trees yes, running on the trees no.

  38. saray Says:

i think its gonna be awesome i love all the chracters and well also i think the movie is going to be the best movie ever i just can’t wait!!!

  39. Kelsieeee Says:

It doesn’t matter if they change a few things to make the film more exciting. Be happy that a film is actually being MADE. I am, i can’t wait!

  40. Kristen Says:

I have one, hardly articulate word in response:
    Huh?

(But… still very excited for the movie.)

  41. Deanna Says:

To those people saying no one is ever in a tree in the first book…..look again. It wasn’t a big scene, and it didn’t happen when Edward and Bella were in the field. But he was in a tree at some point. Bella just didn’t see him. It’s the part where Bella is lying in the yard beside her house, and she’s reading, and she falls asleep and wakes up with the feeling that someone was watching her. Yeah. That was Edward. In a tree. This was confirmed by Stephenie Meyer in one of the interviews on the Twilight Lexicon. Unfortunately it’s being revamped right now, or I’d post the link. But anyway. There you go. Edward in a tree. Can we stop b*^ching about it now?

It’s a guy in a tree, for goodness sake. If he can lift a car, I don’t see why it’s so inconceivable for him to carry someone up a tree. So what if it’s not exactly like the book? It doesn’t change the plot, and it doesn’t really change his character at all.

To the cast, if they’re reading: I have complete faith in you guys. I can’t wait to see it.

  42. Vera Says:

UGH! I am soo bloody frustrated with what I am hearing from this movie so far! THERE IS NO “TREETOP JUMPING” IN THE BOOKS! I have read all three books more than 5 times and I have not once encountered a Treetop scene! you let me know if there is a treetop scene in there cause in the FIVE times I have read the book the closest they have gotten to trees is ON THE GROUND in the woods. Please let me know and prove me wrong!

  43. Halet Says:

Yeah we all know that Edward was in a tree BUT he wasn’t running on them, anyway other than that part i can’t wait to see the movie i hope its GREAT good luck to all the cast,

  44. Heather Says:

I know for sure that actual running through the tress was not in the book anywhere. Yes, Edward was watching Bella from a tree, but no actual running through the trees. I think I’ll be able to deal with it, though it he tells her that he’s a vampire, does that mean they cut the Port Angeles scene? because i think that’s a fairly povitol scene. But anywayz, where did everyone read these sides? can someone post a link or something, because i’d really like to read them as well.

  45. Bella Says:

Wow, so they actually read this stuff? who knew! We actually get our words heard!

I think the tree top part is going to be exciting really! I don’t think Rachel looks like Victoria but everyone has a diff. picture, and seeing what they did with Alcie and Rosalie, ect,I think magic with her to!!! I really can’t wait to see the movie, cause all I wanna do is act, and it amazes me when I keep up with all this acting about movies and book!

And to learn about all this, I …. this is gonna be good!

-and for better referance, I shall read it again…. when my friend gives it back to me…..

  46. Kal Says:

OMG I SOOO can’t wait till the movie and I think that scene is a little dif then the books, i don’t know if i understand though what does it mea by treetops? like running on top of a tree? or going up a tree? ah either way the movie will rock!

  47. auds Says:

LOL clearly Rachel didn’t read the book(s) because there are NO scenes in “tree tops” in the books. Whether they’re running in the tree tops or along the ground, it doesn’t matter to me, but don’t try and say that it happened in the book, sorry it didn’t.

  48. Vera Says:

from what I am thinking and hearing I think that they are skipping the Port Angeles scene and it is a pretty important scene. I am also hoping that they have Jacob in there as the person who opens Bella to the possibility of the Cullens being vampires, because if no then there is going to be no second movie or third or fourth and they have excluded extremely important scenes such as this in other book to movie transfers. and if Jacob isn’t the one who tells Bella about the vampires then it isn’t Twilight! I will refuse to call it Twilight and I know I’m not the only one who is going to think that!

  49. Danielle Says:

Okay i have read Twilight New Moon and Eclipse about 50 times each (seriosly) and i think she is going to be a great Victoria, but there was NEVER a tree top sceen. they run through the forest! not over it!

  50. Bella_twilight Says:

Okay, so from what I’m hearing from the people who have read the scripts is that there is no Tree-hopping scene, which is completely relaving though it would be interesting. But I just hope that Jacob tells Bella about the Cold Ones and not have Edward confess. It just seems more Twilight-ish.
