‘Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince’ Strays From Book, Adds Scene

Harry PotterIn a recent interview with the “Herald Sun,” “Harry Potter” producer David Baron revealed details of an extra scene to be inserted into “Half-Blood Prince,” generally good news for fans of J.K. Rowling’s fantasy epic.

So why does his explanation make me hotter than a Hungarian Horntail? (Warning: Book Seven spoilers ahead)

It’s not just because the scene, which Barron says will take place at the Burrow, isn’t from the book. Baron states, and I of course acknowledge, that certain things from a novel don’t necessarily translate to film – it’s the nature of any adaptation. That means sometimes things have to be added and, truthfully, this particular quandary seems as good a candidate as any.

“Jo (Rowling) was able throughout the quite lengthy book to keep dropping little snippets of what was happening in the outside world - there’d be people reading newspapers and talking about how somebody’s parents had been killed, or somebody had been withdrawn from school because their parents didn’t think it was safe,” Baron explains. “And we’re making aware that the Muggle world is also experiencing these disasters…This was brought in because even in what would normally be considered the safe haven of the Burrow, nobody’s safe.”

Fine. Agreed. No, what makes me mad is that this added scene, if it’s indeed an attack on the Burrow from Death Eaters, will almost certainly be a detriment to a similar scene – a much more powerful and important scene – at the beginning of Book 7, when the Burrow actually is attacked for the first time DURING A WEDDING.

When Kingsley’s patronus lands smack in the middle of Bill and Fleur’s nuptials, I nearly lost my breath. So why would they have an attack scene at the Burrow in the preceding film? My great fear is that it’s because there won’t be a wedding at all. Last week, Clémence Poésy told MTV News that she won’t be appearing in “Half-Blood Prince.” Could it be that she’s not appearing in “Deathly Hallows” either?

I’m all for adding scenes – heck, I want each “Potter” film to be three hours long – but not at the expense of actual story.

But what do you guys think? Do you like the added scene? Would you like it more or less if it was indeed an attack by Death Eaters on the Burrow? Sound off below.

  1. i only like this idea cuz i heard my favourite actress (helena bonham carter)is going to be in it! but i really want the wedding scene in DH its a great scene! and i can't believe fleur won't be in HBP! those are funny parts and ginny actually TALKS in them! (ginny never talks) :(
  2. Cant wait to see harry potter and the half blood prince and harry potter and the deathly hollows!!!! the last movie (harry potter and the order of the phenix) was alot different than the book i hope that they dont do that again! deffently not to the last 1 its the most inportant i think ant it would rerally suck if they left anything out. because to if you left ANYTHING out you would just destroy the freakin movie and the people who have never read the books would never understand how good the story really is!!!!
  3. I am hoping that if they were to add a scene Why not add more from the book? The story itself is amazing. If they are in fact cutting the wedding then they are cutting out one of the most shocking and hair raising points in the book. For Voldemort to have the nerve to attack while everyone important is there and know it is the home of members of the order proves how ruthless he is. throwing in a scene simalar without the message jo is creating is a complete waste of film. The intense feeling you get in the final book is that its now or never, everything that hasn't happened will and if you take that mentallity away for one action scene of a film then you are lowering the standards for the final chapter in this amazing series.
  4. i think that fluer should appear and that there should be a wedding but i don't like the idea of an attack before the wedding
    Hope Fluer shows up.
  5. The only way an attack on the Burrows would work in the 6th movie is if they ended with the wedding, movie 7 can vinish off since it will be two movies. If the movie is pulled too far from the books, those who have read the series will voice there disappointments. They need to stay as close to the book as possible. If scenes are added they need to be true to what might of happened in book 6.
  6. i agree, i think they should keep that attack to the wedding scene in the 7th book...it's SOOO important and would translate so well on screen. I don't think they should have it in the 6th book at all. That's why i like the books much better.
  7. NO EXTRA SCENES If they cut important scenes out of the other films they have no right to maje up new ones for this film. There is enough material in the book to make a four hour film, I would be all for that. Why dose'nt JKR put a stop to this.
  8. I just hope that they don't leave anything out of the 7th movie. Ecspecially the wedding and everything. There is a lot of important stuff!
  9. i think they shouldnt add scences in if they arent in the book i understand its hard to go from book to film but to hve the attack in the half blood prince is just plain stupid, that happens in the final book and the whole world knows it it will ruin the film
  10. I was really quite PI$$ed about the mods in the other movies so this is just another thing to make me hate David Yates. WB cant build a sucessful tv network muchless improve on Rowlings work. They should leave it the hell alone and produce what Potter fans want to see and that is the books made real not some one else's veiw of it!........
  11. If they are adding a scene it had better be good! I mean; it's fine if they delete a few scences to make it shorter but...I don't think that it's a good idea to ADD a WHOLE NEW(well maybe not NEW) scene! I don't think that it's very...disrespectful sort-of to J.K. Rowling. Because their trying to copy what she's put so much work into, into some piece of crap!
  12. How in the world can you change a story like that? It takes away from the exicitment of book 7. If there is to be no wedding that ruins the story althogether, and I for one DO NOT AGREE with the producer of the film.....NO EXTRA SCENE...especially if it changes the story and this scene will....NO NO NO
  13. They can add the scene in if they want! I think it'll make the whole story more realistic. The fact that there's an attack on the burrow will cause the film to be more..intense?
JK Rowling obviously has agreed to this additional scene and I personally think it's pretty good. The movie's aren't identical to the books - they never have been, so they're right to add in their own scenes.
I think the wedding will be in the seventh film because it's a key part to the book. They normally put important things in. Some subplots have been left out in previous film - some to my disappointment - but I like what they do with the films. It's along the same track as the film but with a different touch.
I say good luck to them and I am sooo glad the last film's split in two - i think they will include all the best bits and it'll be even more exciting!
  14. Okay, people are getting too carried away with this. It's a film and I'm obsessed with Harry Potter, but "disrespectful sort-of to J.K. Rowling"..? What? She's agreed to this scene! And that's all it is! ONE SCENE! Come on.
Families would be getting attacked in the 6th book - it's what Voldemort was doing! The Weasleys probably would have been attacked - they're blood traitors and friends to Harry Potter! of course they'd have been a target! I think like with the way they did the 5th film, Harry feeling alone and everything, then the 7th book when Harry just wants to do everything alone and feels he is a danger to everyone he is with, - this new scene, I think, will increase Harry's feelings to this and make you feel more towards him! He's feeling all alone-like and you will feel more sympathetic towards him - it's all in the acting! Come on, accept it. It's not like they haven't added an extra bit in any films before is it?

  16. This book above all the others, I believe, has the greatest potential of any to be a superb movie. I think that adding scenes is fine as long as they are not detrimental to the rest of the movie and next movie(s). I really really really hope they dont #?~?~ these movies up.
  17. okay noo i do not think that that would b good.. like all the movies have stayed in check with the books.. i dnt think it should change now..
  18. this is insane! if she decides for herself that she doesn't want to be part of the movies any more. they should find someone that looks pretty durn close to her. they can't just wipe out a character. and they shouldn't take away a scene in the 7th movie like that. i dont get why they would even put an attack on the burrow.. there will be one. it is not needed in the 6th movie. i dont mind cute lil add ins, and take-outs of not so necessary things. but adding something that was never there. and could mess up some of the story.. what does JK think of this?
  19. Look everyone they are going to make this into a superhero movie series. Your first clue was harry seeing into Snape's mind (LOL) in the 5th movie and levitating. They want lots of magic and CGI because they don’t think they can make $$$$$$$$ telling a story about 'an Everyman character who is not the best wizard or student by any stretch of the imagination, but has heart and cares'.

The 5th movie barely had a plot, if you did not read the book, you were left wondering what were they suppose to be after? The ball got destroyed, what does that mean? They could have at least had Dumbledore tell the whole prophecy about harry and Neville at the end

And NO j.k. rowling does not have final say on the scripts she just gets to look at them if she has input they can take it or leave it
  20. WOW...lol adding that scene would be the stupidest thing david heyman and david yates asses could do...seriously lets get real..its not in the damn book so dont put it in the movie...personally i was dissapointed when watching the 5th movie. it wasent that good at all and it was too short. it was about as far away from the book as the eragon movie was also...MY point is david yates and heyman need to step u and make the half blood prince brilliant, not a dissapointment.
  21. I really hope they DO put in the wedding! It's VERRY important! I think if they don't their probably going to start off the 7th movie with Harry, Ron, and Hermione running down the street just after they left the wedding. Then they'll show the tea shop fight and how they split up. I guess it would be an exciting beginning but the wedding is important.
  22. I'm so SICK of hearing that these guys keep monkeying around! Sure it'll be something extra, but if this film turns out to be like the MONUENTAL YATES CATASTROPHE that the last film was, it'll be at the expense of an important plot point that EVERYONE will be waiting to see. They still don't have a listing for Rufus Scrimgeour. It's EXACTLY like the way it was with Kreacher!

Just to let all of you know, I think Sean Bean would make the PERFECT Rufus Scrimgeour, and I can't believe it that he's not listed!
  23. oh please let there be a wedding!
