Between Captain Jack, Barbossa, Will, Elizabeth, Davy Jones, Calypso, Norrington and a veritable rogues gallery of pirates, buccaneers and scoundrels, trying to follow every plot thread in “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” left my head spinning like a giant maelstrom.
Turns out “Pirates” helmer Gore Verbinski agrees. Holding court as the keynote speaker at the video game-centric DICE Summit in Las Vegas, the director told the audience that his biggest problem with “At World’s End” was that it had just too many darn characters.
It’s a problem they’ll almost certainly remedy next time around. Reports from websites like Jim Hill Media indicate that the next “Pirates” adventure will center almost exclusively on Jack and Barbossa, presumably as they search for the fabled Fountain of Youth.
Geoffrey Rush more or less confirmed this to MTV News himself back in September, when the Oscar winner proposed a search for the fabled spring as his preferred storyline for a fourth big screen journey.
But if true, it’s certainly news to Verbinski.
“Show me the script,” he said. “I look forward to reading the script for ‘Pirates 4.’”
Verbinski knows, of course, that because of the ongoing writers strike, such a task would be impossible. But, then, past “Pirates” movies have already been green-lit, and even given a concrete release date, without a final screenplay.
Try it again and you’ll lose Verbinski, the director insisted.
“The process of having release dates and no script is not something I’m dying to go through again. I would have to pull the gun out of my mouth [first],” he said. “The reason I did 2 and 3, honestly, was because I still thought there was something to do there. I don’t want to be involved in, you know, ‘Rocky 9.’ ”
What do you think about focusing on Captain Jack and Barbossa for the next “Pirates”? Would you miss Will and Elizabeth? What about the proposed storyline? Does the Fountain of Youth tickle your inner geek? Sound off below, and then head over to the MTV Multiplayer Blog for more from Gore Verbinski.

the second POTC had a little untold love between jack and lizzy it was like the love that couldn't be
the third POTC had that comidy edge, is was hulariouse! "did nobody come to save me just because they missed me" (tee-hee)
I thing if they put in all three of those things in the 4rth then they will have an amazing movie, no matter wether there is a will and lizzy or not
I CANT WAIT TO SEE IT!!!!
GOOD LUCK On MAKING IT
Don't get me wrong, I love the whole series, well 1 & 3 at least, but if I get another gosh darn movie with Johnny Depp supporting it, I'm gonna strangle my cat!
I want them to just leave it where it is! We don't need to know whats going to happen beyond this! Let people's minds wander, Verbinski! Stop directing the Pirates movies and go on to something new and excitting! Like.... Ghosts or something! I dont care, as long as you get away from PIRATES!
In the last movie you could tell that all of the actors were getting bored! NO MORE! STOP HERE! I DONT WANT TO SEE ANOTHER ONE! I know there's nothing I could do to stop him, but seriously! Stop where you are!
Yay for Sparrow and Barbossa. They make for a good story. But you won't be able to make a Pirates 4 WITHOUT bringing Elizabeth and Will back in at least a side plot. People would throw an absolute fit. A side plot including their son would be nice. I suppose he could run off with Jack and go treasure hunting...but even that is getting a little too juvenile for me. The best part about the Pirates movies was they appeals to all ages - those who love action, those who love a bit of romance, comedy that appeals to adults and slapstick comedy for younger audiences and those young at heart!
I don't think Elizabeth would run off with Jack and do anything pirate-y in the ten years Will was gone. So that leads to the writing problem of figuring out what trouble Jack and Barbossa got into those ten years - and staging it in a way that doesn't manage to exclude Elizabeth or Will, without being cliche at the same time. Its not an easy task by any means.
This one, because it has to live up to not one, not two, but THREE fabulously well done movies (that were all VERY well connected and wrapped up the stories in a satisfying way). While I'd love to see the series continue (who wouldn't?) I don't want it done badly, you know?
Like Gore said - "I don’t want to be involved in, you know, ‘Rocky 9.’ ”
But what i really would like to see is more jack and elizabeth but her having that child just seems to get in the way and jack and elizabeth i believe would be perfect together "peas in a pod" simple as that.I would love for them to do another POTC and them finding the fountain of youth. But i would not miss will maybe elizabeth but mainly because of her and jack but anyways that a different note. i would really like to see some of jack's past like when he was an teen and everything between him and cutler beckett *even thou he is out of the pic now* like with jack freeing the slaves. it would be also very interesting to find out what jack looks like if he drank the water from the fountain. wow. i really didnt like how the ended the last one but i loved the movie not the ending they left me pondering and wanting more!
I dunno, is it cliched? Maybe. But a very good chunk of the fan base is female, and young, and watching people get blown off the ships by cannons does absolutely nothing for them. Throw them a bone, or an undead monkey, or SOMETHING....
Personally I liked the way At Worlds End pulled the other 2 parts in to clarify items...It doesn't matter I for one will be there on opening day...should it come to pass...Already know the other 3 parts verbatum...
Totally against a Jack and Barbossa storyline. I hate how they took this evil character and shoehorned him into AWE as just one of the guys. The man is a murdering, raping psychopath and Jack Sparrow, who completed his hero's journey in AWE, is going to hang out with him? Yucccckkkkk.
All three Pirates were great! Full of action, and twists and turns. If there is a fourth one, I expect it to be the same. The soundtracks for all three moveis were the best!
Bring Captain Sao Feng and THE KRAKEN back to life!
