Ask veteran actor Brian Cox about the movies he’s most proud of, and one of the first titles out of his mouth is inevitably the 2001 cult classic “L.I.E.” Now, he’s making plans to reunite with the unknown actor-turned-hot commodity who began his career with that movie. Yes, there will be Dano.
“It’s called ‘The Good Heart’,” he revealed to us over the weekend at Sundance, excited to act again with 23-year-old “Little Miss Sunshine” and “There Will Be Blood” star Paul Dano. “It’s a crazed film about a guy who runs a bar, called Jacques, in New York. It’s a bar where all these deadbeats hang out, like a bar in a Eugene O’Neil play.”
For those of you who’ve been living under a rock for the past month, Dano’s stock has gone soaring with the awards season juggernaut “Blood.” Soon, the in-demand young star will begin filming “Heart” as a follow-up, alongside his old friend and mentor.
“This young homeless man comes in, and he has these extraordinary powers of healing; he can heal all the guys in the bar,” Cox explained of the role Dano will portray. “He also heals my character, this guy who has these heart problems. The old man is always in the hospital, nearly dying.”
In return, Cox’s character Jacques soon begins training the young man to take over the bar after he’s gone. “And what happens is that he develops this relationship with this man much younger than himself,” he said of the film, to be directed by French filmmaker Dagur Kari. “Then there’s another character, who is a Hungarian air-hostess who comes to work in the bar, and there’s a triangle between them.”
Previously, the film had been rumored to be starring Ryan Gosling and Tom Waits. Now, Dano and Cox are pulling up stools at the bar, and all that remains is a female lead.
“We don’t know who the full cast is yet,” the “Bourne” series star grinned, clearly enthused about his upcoming “L.I.E.” reunion. ‘Paul plays the young man; ours are the two big roles, and I’m not sure who the female role will go to yet.”
