Elijah Wood Wants To Go Back Again To ‘The Hobbit’

Elijah WoodAttention Cate Blanchett, Viggo Mortensen, Orlando Bloom, and Sean Astin: You’ve gone “There.” Now get ready to go “Back Again” - at least according to Elijah Wood’s conversations with “Hobbit” maestro Peter Jackson.

“I haven’t spoken to him directly about it [but] I’ve e-mailed him, and as far as I know the two films that they’re doing, one will be ‘The Hobbit’ and another will take place between the 60 years that happened between ‘The Hobbit’ and ‘The Lord of the Rings,’” the once and future Frodo enthused to MTV News, possibly confirming rumors that the second planned film would not be a Part II, but instead a narrative bridge.

Which means plenty of opportunities for all the stars of “LOTR” to reprise their famous characters in some capacity. None more so, perhaps, than Wood himself, who would arguably be a central figure along with Gandalf, Aragorn, Galadriel, and Gollum in any connecting story.

For his part, Wood, who next stars as a conscripted citizen in “Day Zero,” is positively thrilled at the possibility.

“If I’m asked to go back and revisit that character and it makes sense, I would love to. I would absolutely love to,” he said.

True, hard-core Tolkien aficionados could tell you that not much is known about Frodo in the intervening years between “The Hobbit” and “LOTR,” excepting, of course, his parents’ deaths and some conversations and journeys with Bilbo which are alluded to in the later legendarium.

That makes it all the more a guarantee that Wood would return, he declared.

“Nothing was really written with Frodo involved in it. That was sort of an ancillary tale outside of ‘Lord of the Rings.’ I can’t imagine that they [Jackson, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens] would write great reams of information regarding my character,” he said of necessary invention outside of Tolkien’s established canon. “But if he [Frodo] should show up, it would actually be the perfect way to revisit because it could be small enough that I could go back and have a nice sort of reunion with the memories that I have of the experience.”

As an actor, Wood is excited about the possibility of returning with Jackson to the world of Middle-earth. But he’s even more excited, he said, as a fan.

“It’s a great triumph [that Peter is involved.] I think that’s really important that the same team that worked on the [earlier] films [work on "The Hobbit"], the same effects team, that it be shot in New Zealand. I think that it’s important that Ian McKellen is cast as Gandalf, just so that there’s a synergy between the films,” he insisted. “I think people want it to exist in the same world. So at least now we are assured that it will be done through that same lens, which is great. It’s exciting.”

What do you think? Does the thought of there being a bridge film excite you as a fan? And how much of Frodo do you want to see? Sound off below.

  1. Elijah has to go back. No one else can play a younger Frodo than Elijah Wood.

If a 17 year old Elijah could play a 50 year old Frodo (which he did in the three movies) then a 28 year old Elijah can play a 17 year old Frodo.

I wonder how much weight he will have to gain back to look like the Hobbitt that he did at the beginning of the Fellowship of the Ring?
  2. Ok just a correction for txtac: Frodo is not "50 years old" during lord of the rings: yes he's 50 years old, but Hobbits live longer than people; between 100 and 130 years; they state that "50 years old" in Hobbit terms is like in his early 30's. So wood (who was like 19 when he filmed LOTR) being Frodo wasn't totally ridiculous.

Anyway, I'm glad tat Elijah does not support simply "making up stuff for Frodo to do" (otherwise we'd run into Star Wars Prequel crud)...but instead pretty much what us the fans want; him appearing as basically just a few cameo scenes to establish his character.

Perhaps Wood could also appear as his father Drogo Baggins, who might appear at the end of "The Hobbit" itself during the auction scene at Bag End...then die in the "Appendix movie", have a child actor playing "Young Frodo" for the first half, but end with Elijah again as Frodo matures, near the end of the Appendix movie.
  3. Here's a thought: instead of playing Hobbits, perhaps Elijah,Sean, Billy & Dom could be 4 of the 12 Dwarves? Fili & Kili & 2 other younger ones? For grins & giggles? Maybe the makeup's gotten better so they don't suffer the same fate as John Rhys-Davies.
Or, Elijah as Drogo, as mentioned, would work,too- IMHO.
  4. I would love to see Frodo and all the crew back as long as it's not made up stuff.
  5. That would be fine by me. *shameless Wood fangirl*
  6. Huh huh huh huh ... "Wood."
  7. Yes we love to see all the cast from The Lord of the Ring, go Back and be in THE HOBBIT movie.
Also Please Peter Jackson direct THE Hobbit...
  8. i would LOVE to see all the main characters in lord of the rings make an appearance in the hobbit!! it would connect the movies together so much! and i would have it no other way than to have the hobbit take place in the same world lord of the rings took place in, because it did. I think the characters should still be cast as themselves, not any other characters, so we can see them and smile and remember. Ian Mckellan needs to play Gandalf! and it would not hurt to have Orlando Bloom walking around as Legolas in King Thranduil's hall... or almost see Bilbo escaping. Likwise, in the Shire, there could be some clips of the hobbits, even if its just for a second, it would make the movie for myself and several other fans! and of course they would have to be played by Elijah, Dom, Billy and Sean! I can't wait!!!!!!! I'm reliving the years lord of the rings came out :) its exciting to have something to look forward to again!
  9. This is Sooo Awesome!! I would love to see all my favorite faces again, that includes .... Well the whole cast of LOTR!! Wow this is so incredibly cool. I really hope Peter Jackson decides to do The Hobbit !
  10. Oh, that would be wonderful! The more Frodo the merrier...and maybe his first meeting with Sam or adventures with Bilbo - who has to be Ian Holm - give me a break that anyone else would be considered. And more everyone and definitely Peter Jackson be just as involved as he was before and everyone else just as involved. Please God!!

Namarie, God bless, Frodoholic (or more appropriate FrodoandSam-holic)
  11. i'm conflicted, a bridge film would be cool. but if they're making stuff up for it and not following tolkien, then it just becomes another hollywood disaster. peter jackson does great work and as long as he's involved i'm sure the material will be respected.
  12. Yeah... we just need Ian Holm to play Bilbo and we are done.
Does anybody know if he's fine? Did anybody ask him if he wants to play the part?
And don't tell, if he can, that they will not be able to transform him into a younger Bilbo, they can do anything they want these days.
Basically anyone from the original cast wants to go back to Middle Earth (PJ's Middle Earth, by the way) but we have not heard anything from the most important character in the story...
  13. Just to clarify what both txtac and Draug the Unspeakably Violent said, yes, Frodo is 50 in The Lord of the Rings, but he has been in possession of the Ring since he was 33, which is the 'coming of age' for Hobbits, ie. our 18, or perhaps 21. Thus, at 50, he would still look more or less like a 33-year-old Hobbit, and a 33-year-old Hobbit would look more or less like a tiny 18-year-old.
As for the Hobbit movie, I'm really looking forward to it, however, I am disappointed that Peter Jackson isn't returning to direct. I understand that he has other commitments, but still... . Nonetheless, it's clear they're keeping the bond between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and Jackson is taking on a producing role, so I'm mostly happy. Elvellon, I've always thought having Legolas appear in the Mirkwood scenes would be a good idea, maybe as one of the dwarves' captors. I don't think Ian Holm can return as Bilbo, due to his age, but Ian Mckellen should definitely reprise the role of Gandalf.
The bridging film is an interesting idea, but I don't know what they can put in it. We'll have to wait and see. It'll be difficult to construct a coherent narrative of those years.
  14. C'mon, there's no way Ian Holm could handle this. Sure, they could probly make him look young enough (like they did in the prologue from Fellowship), but The Hobbit is a much more active role for Bilbo than LOTR. He has to be able to run, jump, climb, fight giant spiders, etc. Ian Holm is a great actor, he defined Bilbo, but I see this role going to a younger, lesser known American actor the way PJ did with Elijah Wood and Sean Astin. I say Kevin Connolly (E from Entourage)!
  15. Connolly could be a good idea. I would love to see Holm come back since he did appear as a younger Bilbo in the prologue. But Stupac makes a good point. Bilbo's role in the hobbit is just as demanding as any of the hobbits in LOTR.
I would also love to see Elrond return, Celeborn and Galadriel return for more.
  16. They can CG any physical stuff with Ian Holm as they did with Orlando Bloom. Bilbo has to be played by Ian Holm otherwise the continuity is lost. Remember Gandalf telling Bilbo at the beginning of FOTR "You haven't aged a day"?

There is mention of Elrond in The Hobbit, so I would expect him to be present. I wouldn't hold my breath for Celeborn and Galadriel. Elves just didn't play a huge part in the story.

But John Rhys-Davies can definitely play Thorin!

I'm just so excited that New Line got a clue and is letting Peter finish the story!
  17. Hearing and Announcing Peter Jackson Just Made The Foundation Of The HOBBIT and The FUTURE OF LOTR Franchise Made It Strong And Stable Without Allowing It To Crumble. There Is No FiLMakers Who Can Even Come Close To PETER Jackson!!!
    1. Visionary
    2. ARTISTIC
    3. He Reminds Me Of J.R.R Tolkien Who Know How To Write A Story AND Writing the ScreenPlay With His Teamate Phillipa Boyens & Fran Walsh Is Makes Them Unstoppable and Unique and Quality.
Peter If Your Reading This Righht Now I Admire Your Work and Creativity Is Beyond What I HAVE Seen In The Past 20 Years Within The Films.
Its Wonderful To See You Get Involved and Take The Time To Decide Of Direting This FILM "BECAUSE EVERYBODY IN THIS WORLD WANTS YOU DIRECT: THOUGH YOU HAVE OTHER PROJECTS ON THE WAY... WE INDIVIDUALS WILL BE WAITING WHEN THAT TIME COMES!!
  18. OH MY GOSH! How amazing! That would be so wonderful! I agree with Elijah. If it makes sense with the characters and the story and Tolkien's vision, I think Frodo (and Sam and Merry and Pippin if at ALL possible) should be in it. I had no idea PJ wanted to do TWO extra films! All us Ringers are so thrilled right now!
The only fear in my mind would be that the greater public (the non-Ringers) would see the other two movies as overkill. I think of the last three pre-quels to Star Wars. I'm a Star Wars fan, and I was disappointed. Lucas didn't pay enough attention to how he was directing his actors. Episode II and III were great visually but were so awkward in drama.
I don't think Peter Jackson would make that kind of mistake directing, but there is the chance that some people may think "enough is enough". Sadly, for the non-ringers out there, the next two would have to be better than the trilogy in some respect. But, this is Peter Jackson and the LOTR cast and crew we're talking about it.
If they can't do it, no one can. Go for it guys. Ugh! I love you all!
  19. I totally think that Elijah and the other hobbits (Billy,Dom and Sean) should be in the movie. i think it would be great if all the actors were in it(Orlando,Viggo,etc...). Even with them playing other characters. I am sooo excited for these movies. I think they will be AWESOME!!! Especially if all the original actors have a part in it.
  20. I think it makes for "older" actors to be used in looking back scenes where "younger" versions can actually play the part. Ian Holm telling the start of The Hobbit tale to a group of younger hobbits...Frodo included...then using a younger actor to portray Bilbo. You would still see many of the favorites, especially in the 2nd movie...Ian McKellen, Christopher Lee, Viggo, Liv Tyler etc.
  21. The bridge film is being developed from material contained in the LOTR appendices. So yes, it's Tolkien-based. It just wasn't written out as a specific story. I have confidence that if Peter, Fran and Philippa write this, it will do the Professor proud.

And no, Ian Holm won't be able to manage the role of Bilbo. It's far too physical for someone his age, and makeup can only do so much.

My current favorite choice for Bilbo is James McAvoy. I've seen pictures of a young Ian Holm (check him out in Alien) and they look astonishingly similar.

Wood and the other hobbits probably wouldn't have roles either film, except perhaps to play their parents or other relatives.

However, I have a rather off-beat suggestion: I think Dominic Monaghan should play the voice of Smaug. Anyone who's heard him narrate the Ringers movie knows he has a rich, deep voice, and he's certainly capable of the kind of polite sarcasm of that character. Run him through some post-production sound tweaking, and boom, there's your dragon.
  22. I'm extremely wary of anyone writing an original Lord of the Rings story. Sure, Tolkien left notes and there's story in the time between The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, but boy, his are some huge shoes to fill and quite an insinuation to say that someone else can write something equally as masterful as the original stories.
That said...I think I'm willing to trust that Peter Jackson and his crew would have the respect and reverence to make something good, if anyone would. I just hope he knows that if he ruins the story the millions of Lord of the Rings fans will most likely turn their backs and never look back.
  23. I am not sure if Elijah Wood would fit well in the second film; not much happens to the hobbits within the 60 years, except for when Frodo is young. If anything, I think the filler will revolve around Gandalf and Aragorn, since they both did much (and a lot of it together). I am just hoping beyond all hopes that they get a decent script writer for this gap filler.
  24. Yes, James McAvoy as Bilbo would be a great choice! He was great in Narnia, and in is upcoming films he shows he can do both drama and action. And he does not have an distracting look or fame around him (yet) to make us get distracted and belive him as Bilbo. Please PJ, don't get huge stars to fill the other vacant roles! I trust you PJ!
  25. Tai,

and Billy Boyd as Beorn :)
  26. Although a frodo cameo would be good I still think a 'bridge movie' is a bad idea... The major plot people are pushing for it is the white council's defeat of dol guldur... but this occours DURING the hobbit!

Much better would be for the white council storyline etc. to be re inserted within the hobbit in the correct chronological place... Thus the defeat of dol guldur would form the cilmax of the first movie (with bilbo arriving at laketown) and the battle of 5 armies the climax of the second.

I'd be quite happy with Jackson doing this kind of thing, putting 'the hobbit' storyline in the larger context of middle earth/ precurser to LOTR.

But a bridge movie... no! Its not just that it doesn't make sense as a tolkein fan, its more that it doesn't make sense as a film
  27. I'm so excited at the prospect of seeing Elijah in his mesmerising Frodo role again - he was the heart & soul of LOTR - he really must be included in that second film if possible:)
  28. I'd love to see the Hobbit and with a little cameo by Elijah but it would tweak the story too much if he'd have a big role.

What I would like is similar to Will's comment even when he misspells Tolkien :P

But what is a MUST is that Viggo Mortensen, Ian McKellen, Hugo Weaving and Orlando Bloom do their roles again. I know I know, Legolas' isn't really in the books but this has to done....and any more ranger!Viggo is a bonus =D
  29. I'd love to see more films by Peter Jackson. The more of Frodo the better!! I know Peter will do an awesome job if he decides to do the films! All the more power to ya Peter Jackson!!!
  30. I personally think it's all a stupid scheme to milk as much as possible from the LOTR franchise. EW is my fav actor, but Frodo is NOT in The Hobbit. I think it's stupid to make an "in between" movie, esp b/c they have no idea what happened. They need to stick to the facts and keep it pure,or it will just get hoaky and fake.
  31. I'm not sure about the idea of a "bridge" film between The Hobbit and LOTR. The whole point was that the Ring lay dormant for those 60 years in Bilbo's possession. Not much drama there. On the other hand, there's tons of material in the Silmarillion, the History of Middle Earth and the Unfinished Tales that would make terrific films. I'd like to see the story of Beren and Luthien, for one. I just hope they don't try to invent a story where none exists.
  32. That would be totally awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think that Frodo should totally be in the brige, there is a lot of storyline that they leave up to the imagination and Elijah Wood does a great job portraying him !
  33. As a hardcore LOTR fan, I think this would be an excellent thing to do. Although their idea for a "bridge" movie seems like there would be more happening I think that it would squash the other movies. Anyhow if they decide to replace the "bridge" movie with a continuation of the first half of the Hobbit (that is if they make it this way) I think that it could allow for the film to have much more detail.
    Off topic~
If they do make the bridge movie i think that instead of just making it one movie they should make it the basic histories of middle earth series. Since they are trying to make it so that the imagination gap that was left behind with the trilogy is limited, I find that if they were to make another 10 or so movies that it would ultimately destroy any hope of the creativity that the non-readers have come up with(e.g. the fantasy worlds people un-real things not based of books or such). I agree with the people on casting but otherwise meh.
  34. Hopefully, the second won't be a bridge movie, cuz there really isn't anything there. I like the idea of them doing two movies, but what the second is going to be about, I'm a little scared to find out. I would be thrilled, however if they did a movie based on (maybe) The Children of Hurin.
  35. Back when Lord of the Rings came out, I was hoping for a "Hobbit" movie to come out. And even back then, I thought it would be great to have the movie perhapse start out as maybe Frodo or even Sam reading the story from Bilbo's red book. You know? Starting the movie off with them and then flashing back into the past. Maybe rather cheesey but hey, what can I say, any chance to see Elijah as Frodo again would be great. Just a small enough cameo to not over burden the plot of the Hobbit.
  36. I seriously doubt the "bridge" movie is going to be a completely separate & tangential story. Why? Because PJ's plan is to shoot both films simultaneously like he did with LOTR. So it wouldn't make sense for him to try to balance two completely unrelated films. My guess is he will just expand on what happens during/directly after The Hobbit.

By the way, since PJ isn't going to direct, I think it's almost a must that he get Guillermo Del Toro, who I think is the best visual story teller out there right now. The Devil's Backbone, Pan's Labyrinth, even the Hellboy movies... His style of dark, creepy atmosphere and unbelievably trippy creatures is PERFECT for the world of Middle Earth, especially for The Hobbit which is a lot more "fantasy" based than LOTR. What's more, he and PJ share their roots in horror movies. If GDT directs The Hobbit movies, I think they have a chance to surpass PJ's LOTR.
  37. There is a lot that happens "off camera" in The Hobbit, which we find out in LotR. For example The White Council, the driving of the Necromancer out of Dol Gulder, and Aragorn's tracking of Gollum, and Aragorn's riding with the Rohirrim as Thorongil.
I have confidence that as long as PJ Fran and Philippa write the second movie, it will be great- and faithful to Tolkien!! Go PJ and go WETA!!
  38. Wow... Oh Wow!!! This is awesome!!! Frodo, the clever hobbit will get to climb so high again!!! Talk about family re-union. I can't wait. LOTR is my life. I can't see anything related to LOTR, without the regular cast, in some sort of fashion.
  39. I can hardly wait!!!!
    what a great idea!
hope peter jackson get to direct.
    frodo lives!
  40. I completely trust PJ, who is also a great fan of Tolkien and Middle Earth to be intrinsically careful with both the Hobbit and a bridging movie.I believe doubting Thomas' should have another viewing of what Pete and his team did with LOTR and simply have faith. Very excited about cast returns as well :P
  41. Why doesn't Elijah play Bilbo? I think that would be great!

    Seize The Day!

  42. I've long awaited a Hobbit film to be added to the LOTR franchise, as it being one of my favorite books and am excited in seeing how they plan to do it. Frodo isn't in The Hobbit, so the only way I could see incorporating Wood into the film would be as him perhaps telling the story, which I don't think should be done, or at least shouldn't know it isn't being done until the end, as just a cameo, which I also don't know if that would be to my fancy. In my opinion, if in the film you learn the story is being told by a character, it ruins the perception of the story being "now" or in the present, which takes away from the excitement and suspense because you conclude the story has already been done and isn't really unraveling as you watch. Also, Ian Holm would most definitely need to play Bilbo to keep the connectivity between the films. I believe someone mentioned this already, but in FOTR it is mentioned that Bilbo was "well preserved" and not aged since the Hobbit. So, seeing a different, older, or even younger face wouldn't quite do for me.

Also, the idea of a bridge film, I think is a good idea, but a very hard one to be successful with. It's hard to add to such great works and not ruin or alter the original story or play it out. My overall opinion would be to cut the idea and stick to the original known story. Some things need to remain a mystery, and the years between should. It keeps us all wondering.
  43. How could Frodo possibly be in the Hobbit film, except as a narrator? Frodo wasn't even BORN until 27 years after the Battle of Five Armies !

The idea of EW as Bilbo is better, but IMO someone else should do it.
  44. Elijah probably doesn't play Bilbo because he already played Frodo, so that would be to complicated for some people.
Besides if Elijah would play Bilbo it wouldn't feel good to me.
I will always see Elijah as Frodo and not as Bilbo...
  45. it would be ridiculous to have Elijah play Bilbo. He can't be Bilbo and Frodo. I agree that McKellan should be Gandalf. All actors who played any of the characters that reappear in The HObbit should continue playing those characters in my opinion. As far as a bridging story between the Hobbit and LOTR, I'm not so sure. I don't think there is really any need.
  46. Tolkien goes back to Middle Earth with books of footnotes, so why not a bridge with Frodo? A film is different from a book. A book is by one author while a film can be accomplished with many different aspect: director, actor, writer, animation, music, so on and so forth.
  47. No one ever said anything about Elijah playing Bilbo!
I think it would be great for the second film that all the fellowship made some kind of cameo so we could see their life before the ring, esp. Frodo' s life with Bilbo.
Can't wait for production to get started and i'm sure Ian would return as Gandalf.
  48. Elijah playing Bilbo is ridiculous. Ian Holm is far too old now... so I'm not really sure what they would make out of that. As far as a bridge film goes, I'm psyched! Any and all LotR I'm up for, even though I was surprised at the thought. Afterall, there isn't really too much info on those years themselves. Ah well... as far as my two cents is worth, New Line really just needs to get PJ on board.
  49. Why not use Sir Ian Holm as Bilbo again? The CG guys at Weta Digital could use their techinical genius to make Ian face look younger, the same way they did on the face of King Thedon then he was under the spel of Sauruman, a transition so to speak.

Or make use of make-up to make EW look like Ian or even a digital face of him.

Furthermore Ian Mckellan should be Gandalf otherwise new "the Hobbit"'s wizard will confuse fans with two different wizards and future fans wouldn't make the connection between the wizards in "the Hobbit" and LOTR.
  50. It is a sad day when one learns that PJ will return once again to mutate and mangle some of the best literature of the 20th century. Blah!
