Somebody at Warner Brothers please get on the phone with this guy. Just two months after talking “Harry Potter” with MTV News from Budapest, director Guillermo del Toro was back stateside making another pitch to helm the series seventh installment, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.”
“I’m definitely interested,” he insisted, “now that the movies have grown darker. They have a contrast between the gloomy existence of the kid and the world he’s exposed to. They have evolved into a really nice universe.”
The deathstick, a wand of destiny which makes its bearer unbeatable. A resurrection stone which enables the one who wields it to visit with the dead. A trip to the afterlife and a final duel which makes “Return of the Jedi: look like kindergarten cops and robbers. Indeed, given all the new elements of the “Harry Potter” universe introduced in “Hallows,” there’s little doubt that it would be right in del Toro’s wheelhouse – especially after the visionary “Pan’s Labyrinth” cemented him as the master of fairy-tales that cross over from children to adults.
After reading the seventh novel himself, del Toro can’t help but nod his head in agreement.
“I got [’Deathly Hallows’] for my daughter and she was like ‘When are you going to give it to me?’” he smiled. “I read it and I was very moved by the ending. It ends very much like a Dickens novel.”
So what’s the hold-up, Warner Bros? Can we make this happen or what? Do you think del Toro would make the perfect director for “Hallows”? Sound off below.

I do hope Del Toro makes the final take of the HP series, he’s vision could provide the mood in which the book is written, eerie and sad but also quite dark and with loads of action.

if Del Toro does get the job, i hope he puts alot of detail in the 7th movie, because it is the final one, and no one wants to be dissapointed. I want it to be the best movie, because in my oppinion, it’s the best book. Alot of people are going to have high hopes for the movie, so I give him the best of luck!

Hey! In case you guys missed it, WB previously asked him to direct PoA and HbP, but apparentley he refused (i could see why). So, while i would do anything to have him onboard for Dh, i’m not “too” sure whether Wb will ask him for a third time.
Anyway, if he didn’t get the job, then Alfonso Cuaron is my first choice (my favourite Hp movie being Alfonso’s wonderful PoA). But, Guillermo is the 100% perfect choice, sure he would make it a “hell” lot darker and scarier (probably it will get an R Rating) but i don’t mind, i’m over 18 and most of the Potter fans today will have turned 17 by the time Dh comes out (that’s sometime in 2010, probably in June or July) for the others, well they’ll have to wait, won’t they? And anyway, i think Dh will get an R Rating no matter whoever directs it (i mean, just think of the death toll in Dh!) But, the thing that qualifies him 100% is not only his “very” dark approach, but his vision of the books. He compares them to Charles Dickens’ “Great Expectations” and well, i couldn’t agree more.
He’s without doubt the perfect, stylish director for Dh, and he would make wonders with Harry Potter’s crew (like with Poduction Designer Stuart Craig) and Cast. So Wb, Please, Please, Please, get this man on-board for Dh and you won’t be disappointed at the Oscars or at the box-office!

Well…in all honesty, DH needs a director like Del Toro..I have read all 7 books and I must say that I was disappointed with the way the OoTP movie turned out given in my opinion that the movie barely touched the surface of what really went on and happened in the book. With each book, Harry has gotten older and it’s no longer the innocence of a young kid in awe of wands, but rather a kid becoming an adult and it’s now up to him to save the wizarding world, which I’m sure we all knew it would come to this. Therefore, it should be “dark and glorious” all the same. Just my two cents as a HP fan and a movie lover….but even if Del Toro doesn’t get to direct this movie, whoever does, PLEASE PLEASE do the books justice!!!!!!!!!!

Please Warner Brothers, ditch Yates and take Del Toro. Seriously do not pass up on such a fantastic director as Del Toro, he will take the role and do it more the justice.
Someone quickly make a site that expresses something like … www.deltoroforseven.com and yeah HURRY before they let Yates come back.

PLEASE!!! Let Del Toro do Deadly Hallows.
It would be great for the tone of the series, and I would be very proud of having TWO mexican directors in the most succesful movie series ever, so far.

First things first: whether it is del Toro or someone else, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows should have an entirely new director. It is the last in the series. The story is a lot different than the other films/books, and the feeling is much darker. The film deserves an equally fresh take.
Although I greatly disagree with Nipuna about the film recieving an “R” rating, I do belive that del Toro would do excellent at the helm. Although him being at the helm has less to do with the amount of info that makes it into the film than the screenwriter (Michelle, just FYI, OotP was writen by a different writer than the others. I enjoyed the film and the writing a lot, but the shortened amount of content was almost exclusively Goldenberg’s fault, and Yates will probobly direct a much better film in HBP with Kloves back at the helm).
The point of the director is the feel, the emotion, the look. The way the actors act. The way the music plays. The way the camera moves. And yes, to an extent, the way the screenplay is written. “El Laberinto del Fauno” (”Pan’s Labarynth”) shows that del Toro can do the right feel for DH. He can create whimsy that is also simultaneously creepy. And, from what I’ve seen during the previews for “El Orfanato” (”The Orphanage”), he’s pretty dang good at doing the downright scary too. Finally, though I have never read the original Hellboy comic, I have been told that the film is a fairly accurate reproduction. So that sends a pretty good message that del Toro wouldn’t be one to completely change the story or anything. He probobly wouldn’t try to add little men dancing on pianos (as his friend Alfonso suggested during the production of PoA).

Guillermo del Toro is GREAT!!!!!!!!!
PLEASE, PLEASE WB ASK HIM TO DIRECT Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows!!!!!!!!!. He will make of a great book a great movie. “El Laberinto del Fauno” (”Pan’s Labyrinth”) is a demonstration of his quality as a director and as an artist. The movie is really really great in a lot of aspects, like special effects, music, performances, etc… (proof of a really strong and very good director). The music of “El Laberinto del Fauno” is also very good. The composer writes the music but the director is the one who decides why, where, when, how, (etc.) to use the music. If John Williams returns too as he declared (he said that is likely for him to return for DH) and is under the direction of a great ARTIST like Del Toro de movie will become one of the best movies in all time.
Guillermo del Toro is GREAT!!!!!!!!!
PLEASE, PLEASE WB ASK HIM TO DIRECT Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows!!!!!!!!!

If sometime in the near future it is announced that Guillermo Del Toro is directing Deathly Hallows, I WILL BE ECSTATIC! Pan’s Labyrinth was a brilliant movie and I think Del Toro could definitely do the same with Movie 7. I’m really worried about how Movie 7 will turn out and I sincerely hope David Yates does not direct it. I did not particularly enjoy “Order of the Phoenix” but I hope that “Half-Blood Prince” will be better since Steve Kloves is the screenwriter. I also think that Deathly Hallows has the potential to be rated R. For example, George’s cut ear, Dobby being killed by a dagger, Nagini inside the corpse of Bathilda Bagshot, etc. Del Toro could do these scenes brilliantly.
So Warner Bros., don’t be stupid. Get on the phone immediately and call Guillermo! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!

PLEASE! LET HIM DIRECT DH! this man is an excelent director! i LOVE all the movies he had made!, and i know he will do a pretty good job with DH! SO please WB ! Just fired david yates! he does not do a good job in the last movie! he erased a lot from the books, and i know del toro will not, so please let him do the movie!
I CAN’T WAIT TO WATCH IT! especialy the part when they are at malfoy’s house!
January 10th, 2008 at 10:09 am
I totally disagree, David Yates has done wonders with a trimmed ‘Order of the Phoenix’ and delivered a sophisticated masterpiece.
I want Warner Brothers to stick with him till the end now.
PLEASE, NO TO DEL TORRO!!!!!
January 10th, 2008 at 10:14 am
I THINK WB SHOULD NOW STICK WITH DAVID YATES, HE DID WONDERS WITH OOTP.
IT WILL BE GOOD TO HAVE THE SAME DIRECTOR THRU TO THE END NOW TO.
ABSOLUTELY NO TO DEL TORRO!!
January 10th, 2008 at 8:21 pm
I think it’s an absolutely amazing idea to have Del Toro come and direct DH because Pan’s Labyrinth was an amazing film and it shows he can direct dark fantasy against a backdrop of war. David Yates did a pretty good job with Phoenix and I’m sure Half-Blood Prince will be even better with Steve Kloves returning to write the screenplay. Think about DH: The dakest, most emotional, and action-packed of the HP series with a amazing score by John Willams, great adapting by Steve Kloves, and amazing directing by Del Toro DH has the potential to be an epic masterpiece!!!Please Warner Bros. DEL TORO FOR DEATHLY HALLOWS!!!!!!
January 11th, 2008 at 8:05 am
aye to Del Toro..venerate his work..hope he will selected and directing DH..
January 11th, 2008 at 8:25 pm
OMG please please please have WB choose del Toro to direct DH!!!!!
Pan’s Labyrinth was absolutely amazing because of its creepy tone and brilliant plot set in such dark and amazing fantasy world. it’s the perfect match for a director such as del Toro. fantasy is considered his specialty and personally i think he would direct the darker scenes of DH excellently. I was a bit disappointed seeing OOTP because i felt that Yates could’ve done a much better job; instead it felt a little like scenes were chopped up carelessly. the movie was also condensed to such an unacceptably short film that they actually left out important points in the story. how exactly they’re going to bridge that gap and make a smooth transition i don’t exactly know. considering this, then i feel that the last 2 installments should need to be around 2 1/2 - 3 hrs. HP is such an amazing series, being a fan of both the books & movies from the start; it was such a letdown. i really hope to see better improvement next time.
so WB really needs to get ahold of del Toro asap.
so far he’s the best to opt for. if not, then the least they could do is make sure they choose an equally brilliant director who won’t disappoint us. but i most definitely in favor of choosing del Toro for the direction of DH 100%.
January 12th, 2008 at 9:12 am
I think that for DH, it should either be David Yates or Guillermo del Toro! I love what Yates did with OOTP, but I also LOVED what del Toro did with Pan’s Labyrinth. I personally think that it should be del Toro. He has the vision, he loves the story, and he knows how to do the book justice. What more could we ask for? GO TO DEL TORO WARNER BROTHERS!!!
March 21st, 2008 at 9:31 pm
Bring on Terry Gilliam. He’s already familiar with all the Britishisms, etc.
April 10th, 2008 at 7:48 pm
its gotta be Del Toro, i don’t like what David Yates did with ootp at all, it just didn’t have it, to me it was one of the worst movies of the lot. Now Del Toro.. well Pans Labyrinth was amazing, such a unique piece of cinema, which cinema doesn’t see often, and he pulled it off very very well. Del Toro loves his fantasy, he probably has every single fantasy book in his library.. he shouldnt be taken lightly. Hes seen an opportunity, to be able to use his vision, the final book is in HIS territory, no one else apart from Peter Jackson (maybe) better for the job.

Guillermo Del Toro would be a perfect director to end the franchise. The man has complete understanding of fairy tales and fantasy. The final book is dark, and Guillermo is a master at dealing with this type of material. Yates has a feel for the Potter universe, and he knows a thing or two about making Harry Potter edgy, but Guillermo has proven with his past work that edgy, dark, and sophisticated imagery are things he can definitely bring to the end of the franchise. Let’s face it: the final Harry Potter book is a fairy tale for grown-ups!
