What do you do when your funniest partner-in-crime also just happens to be the Haley's Comet of actors, and people keep asking whether you'll ever reunite for a true "Friday" sequel? According to Ice Cube, you wait.
"I think if [Chris Tucker] don't come back, we shouldn't do another one," Cube revealed to us this week, breaking news about the future of his signature series. "And if he comes back? We should."
Twelve years ago, Tucker broke out with his portrayal of the manic character Smokey in the lost-afternoon classic; in the last seven years, however, he has made exactly one movie. Meanwhile, Ice Cube has produced, starred in and helped write the rapidly-diminishing sequels "Next Friday" (2000) and "Friday After Next" (2002). Earlier this year, Cube put out the word that he wants Smokey to light up again one last time; now, after the success of "Rush Hour 3," and with his own "First Sunday" about to hit theaters, the rapper/actor has been hearing good things.
In August, we approached Tucker with Cube's request, and the funnyman said he'd be willing to read a script. "I would love to, but I don't know if I'll be able to do it," Tucker said at the time, sending a message back to his co-star. "But come with a great script and I'll consider it. We'll see."
"It's a lot of hoping, but there has been progress," Cube said of Tucker's response, and the resoundingly positive comments that filled our earlier Movies Blog post. "He didn't say he didn't want to do it, so the door is open."
As Smokey once opined: The older the berry, the sweeter the juice. Now, Cube is saying he'll continue to wait around for his old friend, as long as he's not in a walker by the time those cameras finally roll.
"I just don't wanna have no f-ckin' grey hairs, ya know?" he laughed, realizing that Tucker's current career path wouldn't have him making another film until 2015. "I guess he's like an eclipse or some sh-t like that."
God put "Friday" here for me and you. Does Tucker need to start taking advantage? What do you think of Cube's announcement that there'll be no more sequels without Smokey? Let us know, you 'punk-ass, busta-ass, jerri curl wearin' homey!'
