Breaking News: Peter Jackson Will Re-team With New Line For Two Films Of ‘The Hobbit’!

Peter Jackson The word just came in from New Line. There is peace in middle earth at last! Jackson won’t be directing BUT he will be overseeing not one, but TWO films as an executive producer.

Details straight from New Line below!

* MGM and New Line will co-finance and co-distribute two films, “The Hobbit” and a sequel to “The Hobbit.” New Line will distribute in North America and MGM will distribute internationally.

* Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh will serve as Executive Producers of two films based on “The Hobbit.” New Line will manage the production of the films, which will be shot simultaneously.

* Peter Jackson and New Line have settled all litigation relating to the “Lord of the Rings” (LOTR) Trilogy.

Said Peter Jackson, “I’m very pleased that we’ve been able to put our differences behind us, so that we may begin a new chapter with our old friends at New Line. ‘The Lord of the Rings’ is a legacy we proudly share with Bob and Michael, and together, we share that legacy with millions of loyal fans all over the world. We are delighted to continue our journey through Middle Earth. I also want to thank Harry Sloan and our new friends at MGM for helping us find the common ground necessary to continue that journey.”

“Peter Jackson has proven himself as the filmmaker who can bring the extraordinary imagination of Tolkien to life and we full heartedly agree with the fans worldwide who know he should be making ‘The Hobbit,’” said Sloan, MGM’s Chairman and CEO. “Now that we are all in agreement on ‘The Hobbit,’ we can focus on assembling the production team that will capture this phenomenal tale on film.”

Bob Shaye, New Line Co-Chairman and Co-CEO comments, “We are very pleased we have been able to resolve our differences, and that Peter and Fran will be actively and creatively involved with ‘The Hobbit’ movies. We know they will bring the same passion, care and talent to these films that they so ably accomplished with ‘The Lord of the Rings’ Trilogy.”

“Peter is a visionary filmmaker, and he broke new ground with ‘The Lord of the Rings,’” notes Michael Lynne, New Line Co-Chairman and Co-CEO. “We’re delighted he’s back for ‘The Hobbit’ films and that the Tolkien saga will continue with his imprint. We greatly appreciate the efforts of Harry Sloan, who has been instrumental in helping us reach our new accord.”

The two “Hobbit” films – “The Hobbit” and its sequel – are scheduled to be shot simultaneously, with pre-production beginning as soon as possible. Principal photography is tentatively set for a 2009 start, with the intention of “The Hobbit” release slated for 2010 and its sequel the following year, in 2011.

There you have it! “The Hobbit” is a go! And Jackson is a part of it! What do you think? Who should direct? Weigh in below!

  1. If Peter and New Line have "resolved their differences" as Bob Shaye says then WHY can't Peter be the Director and not just an executive producer?? Of course it is absolutely fantastic that he will be heavily invovled, but the question remains! Come on Mr. Shaye let Peter be the director!!!!!
  2. Colleen -

Two reasons: "The Lovely Bones" and "Tintin."

    Regardless, this is fantastic news.
  3. The joy is ... mind-shattering
  4. so... what's the "sequel" to THE HOBBIT?
  5. Well it's about time New Line got most of their head out of their arses if only to glimpse what they've sitting on for so long. But knowing fans luck they'll probably place that Uwe Toiletbowl guy as the director since his movies are completed in a month and distributed around 3 years later. Plenty of time to build up the hype.

As to the sequel... maybe it'll be HVP - Hobbit vs. Predator

All in all I'm still thrilled about the newly named "Skinny Pete" being part of the phenom he brought forth unto the world! Woohooooo!
  6. Oh my god! This is amazing!!!
  7. Hope is restored! THANK GOD!
  8. Hooray--Jackson should have made a movie out of the Hobbit, instead of a remake of King Kong, right after he finished Lord of the Rings. Hopefully, he will be able to use the same actors for Bilbo and Gandalf, and re-use the set he used for the Shire. We'll also get to see 14 Dwarves!

Like "Dennis" above, I'm wondering about the "sequel", but there's lots of good material in the Silmarillion, probably enough for more than one movie!
  9. Thats just peachy! Is Jackson going to rewrite the book and add characters that were never in it? Will he and "Wonder Fran" destroy another screenplay! Oh-Goodie!!..terrible news for true Tolkien fans. Oh just 1 request - Leave the Silmarillion be Jackson, its not a childrens book and we dont need you messing with serious literature and turning it to dabble kiddie's ??%*. Make your money off writing a sequel to the Hobbit (How could the Tolkien Estate allow this fool to write a sequel I'll never understand but money may perhaps even tempt them) My day is bummed.
  10. I totallay believe that no-one BUT PETER JACKSON would give these movies justice if he was not the top Director, Producer, Scrip-Writer etc,. I do not think anyone else could bring about Tolkiens works better, you just need to look at the LOTR trilogy to see this. BRING BACK P.J. AS THE DIRECTOR.
  11. Dennis:

The sequel would just be a continuation. The Hobbit is very detailed and would require two films to cover it even though it is no where near as long as The Lord of the Rings.
  12. Dennis:

I believe the sequel refers to a continuation. The Hobbit is very detailed and would require two movies to convey its complexities even though it is definitely not as long as Lord of the Rings
  13. John Woo (Face Off had great drama and action) or Mel Gibson (who won a Director oscar for the simular genre Epic Braveheart), would make a great Hobbit movie!!!! They both can Direct great Action and Great Drama. They also, have great eyes for epic movies.

Making a great action scene is just as hard as making a great drama scene and only very FEW directors can do both. But these two have proven themelves. My third choice would be James Cameron but, he is busy with Avatar and another film.

My vote is for Mel or Woo!!!! They would do the Hobbit justice and might make it a better film than Peter Jackson would have made. Don't get me wrong, I think Peter Jackson is an god among film makers but, so are Gibson and Woo.
  14. to: Betty Joe; Lern too spayle...Peter Jackson took his name and attached it to the trilogy, taking liberties such as inventing his own new characters, and disregarding Tokien's, he's very much like an orc himself - hacking and burning Tolkiens work then having the pelotas to title the Trilogy as "Peter Jackson's Lord Of The Rings". He so fat and vain that he had to also stick himself in scenes to massage and invigorate his massive ego. If you liked his work - cool. To me - I felt he hollywood hacked what is not his. I resent him. I always will.
  15. Morons, Peter Jackson isn't writing a sequel to the Hobbit! Have you read the book? It is long enough to stretch out into two movies.
  16. Uhhh...you're kidding right?
The Hobbit could be done in less than 3 hours...

I'm not a huge fan of the books or anything, so I have no emotional attachment to them, but I dug the movies, and I'm just excited to get to go see more "lord of the rings" twice more, in theaters. As long as Jackson has some creative control, it'll be great.
  17. i agree bob. if u want a decent film, then it will have to be split into two cause the book is long and complex.

Gregory, ur quite strongly opinionated arent u! in case u hadnt noticed, jacksons quite skinny now lol not that it matters. he did brilliant with LOTR, if it was exactly like the book, page to page, then it would have been a boring film. its SO much more interesting being slightly different. OPEN ur mind.
  18. If new line Cinema got fired in Hollywood for cheating on people for the hobbit does that mean that Peter Jackson is going to come back as a Director of the hobbit and take Gilmore Del Toro out of doing the Hobbit?
  19. YAAAAA!!! I don't think that it work if Peter Jackson wasn't involved, he and Fran are flippin' genus!!
  20. This is GREAT NEWS!!! I am a HUGE Tolkien fan and have read and own nearly all of his books and I personally LOVED the movies myself, even though, YES ... they were not completely book accurate. I feel that they conveyed the message within the story well, and supplied some great visuals to an already amazing story. I can understand the reasoning behind MOST of the differences between the books and the movies and I am there for able to overlook the majority of them. Tolkien's writing is so complex and detailed that it would be nearly impossible to recreate them in a movie without taking some liberties, so give Peter a little break there, he did a FANTASTIC job! The only real part of the movies that truly annoyed me was when Sam left Frodo on the stairs of Cirith Ungol in the “Return of the King” which is something Sam would NEVER have done in the books! ... otherwise I thought the movies were FANTASTIC and are by far my favorite movies of all time! They are literally genus and I am looking forward to seeing the Hobbit done as well, as long as Peter and Fran have a BIG part in it's production and I can’t believe that anyone else would do it the same justice. I will never understand the desire some people have to complain about scripts straying somewhat from a book, if you had any idea how difficult it is to write a good script based off of ANY book much less one as complex and well loved and the “The Lord of The Rings” then perhaps you would change you tune a little, and if not … then just don’t watch them and let the rest of the world enjoy then in peace! The movies allowed many young people who had not yet read the books to suddenly want to read them, so if nothing else the movies inspired a renewed interest in some of the best books of all time!
