By now, you've probably heard -- and lamented -- the rumors that James McAvoy, he of Mr. Tumnus fame, had been cast to play Kurt Cobain in an upcoming bio-pic, one based on Charles Cross' ultra-morose 2001 tome "Heavier Than Heaven" and executive-produced by the late Nirvana frontman's Widow, Courtney Love. But could the rumors be trusted? We finally got the definitive answer this week.
Of course, the McAvoy/Cobain rumblings came equipped with various quotes (attributed to shady "sources close to the production") which blathered that "James … is the perfect choice to play Kurt Cobain," lending a certain air of authenticity. And when "Troy" writer David Benioff's name also became attached to the project, well, we began to resolve ourselves to the fact that the whole thing might be true.
But, we never got confirmation about any of it, so when McAvoy swung by 1515 Broadway to promote his upcoming role in "Atonement" -- which he's really great in, btw -- we decided to get the information straight from the source. So James, will you be donning the tattered flannels and picking up a Fender Jag-Stang anytime soon?
"People have been saying that to me, but I haven't heard anything about it. No."
We are (not-so) secretly relieved to hear this. No offense to Mr. Tumnus, of course.
Are you relieved that it won't be McAvoy playing Cobain? Who's your pick to play the part should movie get made?
