Tim Burton Says ‘Lay Off!’ When It Comes To His ‘Batman’ Films

Tim BurtonNearly twenty years may have gone by but Tim Burton still feels a debt to one man for the success that was “Batman.” “Jack [Nicholson] was so good to me. He really helped me through ‘Batman’ completely. I was just a kid. Everybody was wondering how I got this job and he was just quietly supporting me. I’ll never forget that,” the visionary director recalled when I brought up the famed franchise.

When I told Burton that Nicholson had seemed almost upset about Heath Ledger taking over as the Joker in the upcoming film, the director laughed it off saying, “That’s what’s great about him. He could be not serious but he also could be serious. That’s what gives him an amazing quality as an actor and a person.”

But just because it’s laughs all around when it comes to Burton and Nicholson doesn’t mean the “Sweeney Todd” director doesn’t harbor some resentment over how his “Batman” films were treated.

“I was just always amazed that people used to rag on my movies,” he said. “Nobody really acknowledged the fact that ['Batman'] was slightly different at the time from other comic book movies. So lay off, will you? They would get on my case all the time and it’s still kind of that way today,” he said.

What do you think? Did Burton’s “Batman” never get its due? Or is Burton as mad as one of his maniacal creations? Sound off below.

  1. I LOVE 'Batman' and 'Batman Returns.' They were my some of my favourite movies growing up as a kid. And every couple of years when I watch them I get a little bit more of what is actually going on in them (because, lets face it, a toddler doesn't understand WHY Max Shrek pushes Catwoman out of the window; it only leaves her with an irrational fear of Christopher Walken that haunts her to this day). They were great movies; so was BeetleJuice, Nightmare Before Christmas, Edward Scissorhands, Sleepy Hollow. I loved all these movies, and it's funny because it's only recently I've discovered that they were all Tim Burton's! He's amazing!
  2. I love his movies, too, even Batman! He diserves (spelling?) more respect! Burton is AMAZING! You rock Lauren!
  3. Imagine how much more money Tim Burton's Batman would have made if they good. But then after Shuemucker, they didn't seem so bad. Nipples on the bat suit! Burton and Shuemucker suck. Thank heavens for Chris Nolan and Christian Bale. You will see when The Dark Knight gets released next year.
  4. Is he kidding? I remember the summer of 1989 because EVERYONE was wearing black and yellow Batsymbol t-shirts. There was nothing bigger at the time. Joel Schumacher on the other hand should personally write us all apologies, hand deliver them, and burn his own negatives.
Can't wait for Batman Anime and Dark Knight.
  5. Maybe if he didnt want people to complain, he should have made BETTER MOVIES.

Like, if Batman had to fight Jack Skellington. That woulda been rad.
  6. Tim Burton's Batman movies were great, I refer to BATMAN, and BATMAN RETURNS, then it went downhill fast when another director "Shumaker???" took over.

I was also surprised with Michael Keaton, his Batman was great too!

Keep up the good work Tim!
  7. Tim Burton's 1st Batman Movie is a CLASSIC! The 2nd one was...ok. Actually, he's done so many great movies that it's hard for me to say which one I like the best!!

It's a shame that Jack is acting like a BIG BABY!

  8. Are you kidding me? I loved tim burton's batman movies when i was a kid, but thats just it i'm not a kid anymore.i'm 22 now, watching any of those movies today makes me appreciate batman begins.
  9. Tim Burton's two Batman movies are the BEST, period. "Batman Begins" cannot hold a candle to them. I think "Dork Knight" (aka "Brokeback Batman") will be just as bad. I only wish the idiots at WB allowed Burton, Keaton, & co. do the third and fourth films. I understand Burton wanted ex-Monkee Micky Dolenz to play the Riddler (currently Dolenz is the frontrunner to play Uncle Dudley in the SHAZAM movie). The one mistake, IMO, was getting rid of San Hamm. I read his script for "Batman Returns", and it was a hell of alot better than the final shooting script (likewise, his early drafts for the first film had a cooler edge than the final product). I can only hope the upcoming SHAZAM movie will be as creative, artistic, and magical as Burton's Bat-films were. If no one has told you recently, Tim...THANK YOU for your Batman movies!!
  10. "Brokeback Batman" How lame. A little homophobic dig at a completely unrelated film simply because the straight actor who plays the Joker happened to play a gay character in a previous film. Is that the berst you can do?
  11. I liked Batman and batman returns, and i actualy thought batman returns was better than batman.it does nt mena i dont appreciate nolan take on batman too bt i think tim burton view of batman was very iconic and cool and no one can ever take that away from him.
  12. ---Looks like someone is kissing @$$ and way too much of it. Just because an actor plays a gay cowboy in another film and is now playing one of the most iconic villian from the comic books, makes TDK bad? TDK isn't even out yet and people like you are already dismissing it. This kinda remind me when the idiotic fanboys started to protest when Keaton was cast as Batman and look how that turned out.....

---Batman Returns was why Burton didn't direct BF and maybe B&R wouldn't have turn out atrocious if he directed? But I have to say, if it weren't for B&R bombing, Batman would have stuck with camp, neon, rubber nipples and most importantly, no Batman Begins.
  13. BrokeBack Batman is a very accurate title. Chris Bale's performance as Batman is very homoerotic, with the Harvey Fierstein voice, and as Bruce, there is zero chemistry with Rachel...it's very much like a gay man who has a platonic frendship with a straight woman. Now you bring in Ledger as the Joker, and the main plot is taken from the comic book story "Joker's 5 Way Revenge", in which Denny O'Neil and Neal Adams revisioned the Joker as a gay character.
"Brokeback Batman" is indeed very clever and accurate. I think some are jealous they didn't think of it first. lol
  14. lol silly people dissing the movie when its not even out yet. Batman and Batman Returns were amazing and you CAN'T deny that! That was such a big deal when it came out. If it wasn't good they wouldn't have did Batman Returns ya think?? The other two after returns speak for itself haha...HA! Batman Begins is amazing and the new flick is going to be just as big. Both Tim and Chris's films are glorious and I can't wait for TDK! Nice marketing too! Don't mind the haters TIM. Every movie you do is genius and nothing but...I can't wait for Sweeney Todd!! Looks awsome!
  15. Tim burton rocks and his batman films rock. thats all i will say. who are these ppl who supposedly "rag" on his films? everyone i know loves his films. i guess hes talking about those comic book nerds and stuff. ah who gives a hoot about them , the general public loved his films. i cant say enough good stuff about his films.
  16. I give Tim Burton credit for doing a better Catwoman than that Halle Berry movie. Poor Catwoman was murdered in her title movie. I had wished that Tim had been given that movie.
  17. Tim Burton is one of the worst directors. It's no mistake he is popular amongst the dullard set of hipsters and other imbeciles. His shallow treatment at all serious emotional content is not his only fault. Especially infuriating is a cutesy $*%* aesthetic that makes any serious movie buff feel a nauseated: "OH LOOK THE MACHINE HAS A LITE FACEY WACEY ON IT and IT LOOKS LIKE A PERSON, THATS SO CUTE.

If you can watch the dance numbers in charlie and the chocolate factory without feeling like youre going to vomit then something is seriously wrong with you.
  18. Here it is, in plain English. The Burton Batman films = artistic, iconic classics. The Nolan Batman flicks = ***snnnooore****

Look, all you snot-rags who are dissing Burton, just wait...in 10 years, the new generation will be spitting all over your prescious Nolan Bat flicks for being crap! I'm just ahead of my time!
  19. I just took a look and with inflation adjusted this is where the batman movies rate in the TOP GROSSING MOVIES OF ALL TIME:

FIRST PLACE GOES TO: Tim Burton’s Batman which is 20th
    Batman Forever is 73rd
    Batman Returns is 95th
    Batman Begins is 147th
LAST PLACE IS: Batman & Robin is 281st

Batman & Begins obviously beat Batman & Robin since Batman & Robin was total garbage and Tim Burton had NOTHING to do with it. But, Batman Forever has gotten an unjustified bad wrap since it was directed by Schumacher however, Burton was involved with that film and more people went to see it than Batman Begins.

I also, remember a whole lot of people praising Batman Forever after it came out. Don’t let Batman and Robin taint the reputation of Batman Forever since it was a great movie. I enjoyed Batman Forever better than Batman Begins and obviously based on the results so did the rest of the country since it made way more than Batman Begins.
  20. Tim Burton is a complete genius and his Batman films were works of art, ground breaking cinematography. Batman (1989) pathed the way for the Summer Blockbuster.

I still get chills down my spine when I watch the intro to Batman Returns; The Penguin in his cradle floating down the dark sewers of Gotham, beautiful.

However, I am also very fond of Nolan's work, I really enjoyed Batman Begins, Nolan's casting was phenomenal, Christian Bale is an amazing actor and we all know how talented Morgan Freedman and Gary Oldman are, and who can deny the greatness of Cillian Murphy's portrayal of The Scarecrow?

I think Batman Forever gets a bad wrap, it was a good Batman film until they butchered it with unnecessary campness in the third act.

The Dark Knight (2008) looks very promising and I will be very interested to see how Ledger fairs as The Joker.

The issue we all should be very sore about is the fact that the Spider-Man films make more money at The Box Office than the Batman films.

    THAT IS A TRADGEDY.
  21. I really like the Burton Batman films. When looking through batma comics, I'm always looking for a portrayal of Batman that matches Burton and Keaton's lonely solo version. The films will hold up for longer than Begins, I'll tell you that.
  22. I would love, love, LOVE to see another Burton/Keaton "Batman". I can think of no more exciting sequel I'd like to see happen. The newer "Batman" films are fine (quite overrated in my opinion), but they just can't be touched by Burton and Keaton's takes on Batsy. It's the only franchise Burton has made two films of, so clearly he had great love for them, so why not another? Do it!!! Bring Michael out of the shadows and return with a classic-Burton feel. No one can tell me they wouldn't love to hear those classic notes of Danny Elfman's best score again.
  23. I love Tim Burton.
But I know you can feel discouraged in this line of work.
    But I still LOVE HIM!!♥♥♥
  24. I'm quite dissapointed on Tim Burton's Batman, but at that time, there were no credible directors to do the movie other than Burton so he actually wins by default. Since Batman has no super powers like other comic characters, he should be treated as real as possible. Nolan's Batman is the right Batman, as far as Batman is concerned.
  25. I love Tim Burton's work, but I agree with Kevin Smith when he said that "Batman:Dead End" is the truest and best Batman movie ever made.

Anyway, I would love to see Adam West returning as the Dark Knight and I'm not joking.
  26. Ok...so this is the first I have ever heard about people discrediting Burton's work on the first two and, in my opinion, the greatest two Batman's bar none. Who are these people, I mean really!? Where I come from Jack Nicholson as Joker, Michael Keaton as Batman & DeVito as Penguin are some of the best characters in movie history. Whether you like Burton or not, he leaves an undeniable signature, immediately identifiable by movie goers, on every movie he makes. Teaming the dark Gothic world of Batman and the mind of Burton is a match made in movie heaven. "Batman Forever" and "Batman & Robin", and I think all can agree on this one, sucked! The major flaw in both those sad representations of the Batman comic was they both lacked the dark Gothic that is Gotham. I wish Burton had done them so I wouldn't have to see the Govenator as Mr. Freeze or pretty boys Val Kilmer/George Clooney prance around in nipple suites. I will always be wondering what Burton's representation of Two Face would have been and waiting for him to retake the post as Batman director. Its unfortunate Burton didn't get his props for the classics he made, but I think its safe to say he is one of the best directors to come into the movie biz in the past 20 years by far.
