David Dobkin Takes ‘Flash’ Reins, Spills Details

FlashFaster than the man himself, “The Flash” movie has once again changed directors – and you’ll never guess whose quick hands have grabbed the franchise.

“Wedding Crashers” and “Fred Claus” director David Dobkin revealed to MTV News that he’s signed with Warner Bros. to bring the fleet-footed super to the big screen in a solo project, taking over for Shawn Levy who left for undisclosed reasons.

Dobkin’s film won’t be the character’s first appearance in cinemas, of course, with the Flash a major part of the upcoming “Justice League of America” film. But while fans wait for “JLA” story and casting announcements with bated breath, Dobkin can’t help but hold his – confirming that his movie will exist in the same universe as the upcoming flick.

“It’s designed to work as a spin-off from ['JLA'], so we’re honoring the story and we’re working in tandem with the storytelling,” he said. “I think we’ll just have to see how the movie does and how it works off it, but it certainly would be a movie that comes after ‘Justice League.’”

Asked which version of the Flash would be the hero of his flick, Dobkin didn’t hesitate. “Wally West,” he said. Asked which version of the Flash would be the hero of his flick, Dobkin didn’t hesitate. “Wally West,” he said. This would seem to mesh perfectly with recent rumors that “JLA” opens with Barry Allen’s funeral.

Asked about his vision for the Flash, Dobkin teased us with a somewhat melancholy tagline: “You can’t outrun yourself.”

Stay tuned to MTV Movies for more information about the Flash in the coming days.

  1. sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet
  2. hm...That tagline at first sounds intriguing...but as I think about it, it worries me a bit..."You can't outrun yourself" could very well mean we're going to get a Flash movie that's a family comedy about the Flash learning to balance his real life with his Superhero life...And that would be terrible....
  3. No excitement here. I wonder if the average person even knows what a "Flash" is anyway?
  4. The guy who did 'Wedding Crashers'??? Sounds like a recipe for disaster if ever I heard one.
  5. Though probably a slightly better choice than the guy who did the abominable Pink Panther remake, this isn't anywhere near a comfortable choice for us Flash fanboys.

Yes, we're out here, and between this and JLA we're TERRIFIED.
  6. I didn't know they were making a Flash movie. There's got to be better comics than the Flash.
  7. I think the movie will be pretty good with Dobkins as the director. The Wally West version of Flash is a real jocker in the comics, so i think that Dobkins might be able to pull off a pretty decent Flash. Just as long as it's not a pg- 13 movie made for kid's. I hate when movies are made for kid's and turn out dumb.
  8. Wally's a joker early in his career, but does settle down after a while. As for rating, when did PG-13 become "made for kids?" Let's remember that the rating was introduced in part because of films like the Indiana Jones series, which occupied a middle ground between PG and R -- and that 13 is the lower end of the target age range.

The Flash shouldn't be a grim-n-gritty R-rated film full of blood and gore. The Flash should be an adventure. It's entirely possible to put together an adventure that adults and teens -- and yes, maybe kids too -- will enjoy without dumbing it down.

(Side note: your pop-up authentication doesn't seem to work with Opera, at least not the new 9.5 beta. I had to switch to another browser to post this.)
  9. Barry Allen is The Flash. Wally West sounds like some cartoon hero in a western.
  10. they better not @#*@* this up, make the movie aleast a little dark. Maybe like FFour. And stick with Barry Allen character no-one else.
  11. if they going to use wally west I will not see this movie. on jlu on cartoon network they had wally west looking like a baffune tripping over his feet at 1,000 miles an hour. we fans need to see a strong more mature flash. a flash that can handle his business and make it kind of dark better than the fantastic four crappy movie. I would like to see the electricfing lightening speed fx, vibrating throw walls, run up side of a building using the speed force. fighting mr.freeze
  12. I don't believe that Barry's the better Flash. Y not use Wally. It probably be best depending on who the lead actor is. If someone young you gotta go with Wally, if someone older I could see Barry. But there has to be a dynamite script either way..
  13. I'm sorry but that sucks i'm a big comic book fan and the flash is my favoret you shouldn't wait that long to come out with the flash movie. Comon
  14. Fred Claus, Wedding Crasher, not a great resume for a movie about a superhero so many people love.

Ryan Reynolds could do Barry Allen or Wally West.

I'd rather not see Vince Vaughan in anything. I have yet to see him, even in trailers, do anything besides grossout comedy. My wife insisted of seeing Basketball.
  15. This is great news. I was wonder why they would use Barry Allen if most people that read or watch tv grew up with Wally. I am glad the it will be about Wally. Barry was a stuff shirt. I was not going to see a Barry movie. The guys been dead for 22 years if people like him that much they would have brought him back by now.
  16. THANK GOD.

im so glad there doing a Flash film. He's one of the best heroes and key member of the justice league. I also think Wallys going to be perfect for this, I mean fair do's Barry was a solid Flash, but for a film? His charactors not gritty enough, too straight and good. Wallys struggling to fit into Barrys memory and be a decent Flash as well as struggling to be fast enough, he's not the complete goody good that Barry was as well, he has his own personal demons. I can understand why we'd want Barry, but some on, Wallys going to be a hell of a lot more fun to watch. Im dubious though, they better do this right. If they tarnish hte Flash for me i will demand blood. Hell Yes! Im so excited!
  17. "AND WE" named best song you haven’t heard yet!
  18. For all you WALLY WEST haters out there: he IS the good, the better and the best flash!!!!!!!!!! he is the past the present and the future!!!!!!!!!! why not use him (plus he's immature=P)he might be goofy but he still is the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
p.s ryan reynolds SHOULD play wally and the SHOULD use wally instead of BARRY(he's to old)
  19. The Flash movie is going to be sick, and I don't care what anybody says about it. :D Oh, and last person to comment, they are using Wally and not Barry. Learn to read.
  20. I'd like to see a rather comedic version of the Flash. Anyone who complains about such a tone obviously has no respect for the comics. The Flash isn't Batman--he's not a dark, tragic hero. I mean, come on, who could be a dark hero with Rogues that have names like Captain Boomerang and The Top?
  21. As someone who named his 1st born "Jay Garrick", I'd think it'd be better as a "period piece", taking place in the late 1930's, and Jay's costume would be better recieved by the viewers.
Anyone who remembers "The Flash" TV series, should be thinking "been there, done that".
  22. Wally should fit in there. Anyway he is the last flash ever lived. I think. He had lots of troubles in his first debut being the flash. At then end he was more powerful than any of the FLASHes ever lived. If i'm not mistaken he's the one who mastered the Speed Force, unlike the others who used this called the magic treadmill. Or was he the clumsy flash. I think Wally is the "kid flash" who was seen at Smallville.
    Correct me if i'm right.
  23. Wow, this looks exciting! I think this is an excellent idea for a movie. Despite some of the comments made here, one can't deny the popularity of The Flash.
  24. As a comic nerd whose favorite comic was The Flash during the Messner-Loebs to Mark Waid era, I have always imagined a Flash movie that begins with Wally taking up the mantle of the Flash. If you know the story of what happened to Allen, it makes for the perfect ending. Plus tonally, it would be much like Iron Man. The Flash has always been a natural fit for mass movie audience consumption because of its humor...
