DePalma Promises New ‘Untouchables’ Will Have Same Classic Score And Locations

Sean Connery and Kevin Costner in 'The Untouchables'“You’re nothing but a lot of talk and a badge!” Those were the last words we heard from Al Capone in Brian DePalma’s insanely entertaining “The Untouchables” some twenty years ago. Well, just because Elliot Ness put Al behind bars to the swelling score of Ennio Morricone so long ago, the battle for Chicago has just begun.

Brian DePalma himself told me last week that “The Untouchables: Capone Rising” is likely to be his next film. This prequel will detail in DePalma’s words, “[Jimmy Malone]’s relationship with Capone during Capone’s rise.” Portraying the former character that earned Sean Connery an Oscar is Gerard Butler, Deplama confirmed. “Gerry is still with us,” he said.

The young Capone, however, remains uncast. Nicolas Cage was attached but is no longer on board. DePalma is on the lookout, though. What does the new Capone need? “You’ve got to have that street animal sexuality,” he said.

For those worried that this new film won’t fit in with the first now classic “Untouchables,” rest easy. DePalma plans to keep it consistent, “I would like to use a lot of the original music from ‘The Untouchables,’ and the original locations in Chicago.”

And what about a typical showy DePalma set piece to rival the shootout in the train station? The director promises, “It’s got a lot of fabulous set pieces in it. It will be a lot of fun to do.”

Are you as happy as I am that the glorious music of Ennio Morricone will be returning for the next “Untouchables”? Who do you think has the chops to play the young Capone? Cast your vote below.

I think Mark Ruffalo would be pretty good, he a least sort of looks like Capone. My first choice would be Jon Lovitz but he is too old and I’m not sure he could pull off playing a non comedy role. But he looks alot like Capone.

  2. Geoff Says:

I think it should be Joaquin Phoenix– he’d be perfect.

  3. GBfan Says:

    Philp Seymour Hoffman

    Timothy Olyphant?

Mark Ruffalo’s sexy, but not street animal sexy.

    Phoenix isn’t Mediterranean-looking enough.

  5. PIslander Says:

Yes for PSH, IF he can play that young.

I did see photos of a real grandson of Capone, who some were suggesting play Capone. Looks like his Gramps.

Phoenix is too pretty, and I don’t think he’s young enough, either.
Gotta be a young man, early-mid twenties, and NOT very good looking.

I agree the Ruffalo is an interesting choice, if he, too, can play down that young.

If you could shave 20 years off of Paul Giamatti, he’s be a great Capone.

And don’t worry about Gerry Butler’s ability to pull his weight.
He’ll embody Malone and give a very satisfying, probably bone-chilling, performance.

FWIW, the actor for Capone will have to have the same amount of presence/charisma as Gerry.
    Otherwise he’ll just fade away.

This is going to be a great film!

Gerry is a great choice for Jimmy Malone.

A young Capone, can’t go past Joaquin Phoenix in my opinion.

    Here is Capone…

  10. Jeano Says:

Joaquin Phoenix would be perfect for Capone.

Would love to see him with Gerry Butler.

  11. chris davis Says:

Gerry Bulter is the perfect choice for a younger Jimmy Malone. He is soo awesome. He was awesome in 300!! A MUST SEE!!

  12. Jackie Cane Says:

I personally think Gerard Butler is a terrible actor as is evidenced by Tomb Raider and Phantom Of The Opera and 300 was only entertaining because of its visuals. My own personal preference would have been Colin Farrell who can do a great job if a great director works with him (check out The New World, Tigerland and even Miami Vice for proof).

I did like a previous user’s choice of Mark Ruffalo even if Nicolas Cage was the prime reason I took interest in this prequel.

  13. Mario Gomes Says:

Unfortunately, Hollywood nor Mr.DePalma know much about Capone and the Chicago of the roaring twenties. Jimmy Malone never existed. Federal agent Mike Malone did. The true history of these times would show up real well on screen, as the real exploits of the Capone gang and their rivals were just as exciting if not more than the hollywood made up bull crap! 14. Mary Says:

The young Al Capone should be Joaquin Phoenix. Robert De Niro played Capone in the original, and Phoenix has all the characteristics and acting depth as De Niro. Phoenix can “appear” Italian, too… dark hair, dark features… he would be the most obvious choice in my opinion. I cannot think of another actor that would be as perfectly paired (in dedication and talent) with Gerard Butler. Yes, it should definitely be Joaquin Phoenix.

  15. Native Says:

I believe Joaquin Phoenix would be a fabulous choice for Capone. He has many different looks and the intensity to pull it off.

  16. Lisa Says:

This is so obvious to me, I can’t believe no one else has suggested it.

The perfect choice for the young Capone (schedule permitting) would be…Milo Ventimiglia. He’s got the youthful looks, and as far as charisma goes…well…there’s no question there. He’s got charisma to spare. His Capone to DeNiro’s Capone would be like DeNiro’s Vito Corleone to Brando’s. Whew! I’m getting twitterpated just thinkin ‘ about it!
