Julie Delpy’s Crazy Comedy: ‘Dr. Strangelove’ Meets Monty Python

Julie DelpyIt’s “totally absurd and insane and goofy,” Julie Delpy said of “World Wars and Other Fun Stuff to Watch on the Evening News.” It’s a script that people “would kill to see,” she insisted, “outrageous and crazy.” It’s a political satire that she places as a cross between “Dr. Strangelove” and “Monty Python.”

And it may never get to get made.

“I’m facing the [the] problem [of finding] financiers. They’re terrified of serious political subject matter dealt with in a crazy way,” she asserted. “They think you’ll lose this demographic and that demographic, but it’s all bull. I wish people were more ballsy. Financiers are chickens.”

The movie, which Delpy (who, it should of course be noted, was nominated for a screenwriting Oscar) wrote and hopes to direct is “a comedy, as you might have imagined [by the title]” she said, laughing.

“It takes place in a fantasy country that borders Afghanistan, Korea and Cuba,” she revealed of the flick’s set-up. “It’s the country of the VBP, the Very Bad People. It’s all about a big coup. It makes fun of the idea of making everything, including war, a spectacle.”

The “Before Sunset” star said she had written herself only a small part, but she nevertheless, “would die to do it.”
