Considering it’s been more than two years since composer Andrew Lloyd Weber first announced plans to bring his musical version of “Sunset Boulevard” to the big-screen, with nary an update since, should fans continue to hold out hope of seeing Norma Desmond get a second Hollywood close-up? Yes, but according to its lead, don’t exactly hold your breath waiting for it.
“It’s going very slowly,” sighed Glenn Close, the five-time Oscar-nominated actress who played Desmond in the stage production and is also attached to portray her in the film adaptation. “I think a lot of people are scared [because] it’s a musical.”
Billy Wilder’s original 1950 film noir starred Gloria Swanson as an aged femme fetale who entices desperate screenwriter Joe Gillis (William Holden) into a whirlwind — and soon spiraling — life of surrealism and financial dependence.
According to Close, bringing the movie-turned-musical back to the silver screen — while challenging — is doable, and the recent success of another song-and-dance flick doesn’t exactly hurt. “I think it’s very tricky,” said the “Damages” star. “I think you have to have a very smart writer who can translate it to film, because it’s kind of a hybrid. But ‘Chicago’ worked wonderfully and ‘Hairspray’ is working wonderfully. It can be done.”
Refusing to speculate on who her leading man could be — Ewan McGregor and Hugh Jackman have both been rumored — Close promises one thing is certain…she’s ready to do it. “Oh, man,” she exclaimed. “So ready.”
