Casting Call: ‘Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince’

'Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince'When J.K. Rowling went on Britain’s Jonathan Ross show and said she would like to see veteran actor Bob Hoskins cast in at least one of the Harry Potter movies, all we could think was, well, no duh. “I’d love to play a wizard,” he said. And we’d love it too, since we think he’d fit into the world perfectly.

Could director David Yates think so as well? Approached by MTV News at the L.A. premiere of “Order of the Phoenix,” Yates said he was wrapping up a deal for an actor to play Potions master Horace Slughorn. We couldn’t let the fact that he didn’t reveal who it actually was slow us down, so we looked at the major roles up for grabs in “Half-Blood Prince” and offer up our best suggestions. Agree or disagree, let us know your own thoughts in our comments below.

RUFUS SCRIMGEOUR:

Book Says: Minister of Magic. “[He] looked rather like an old lion. There were streaks of grey in his mane of tawny hair and his bushy eyebrows; he had keen yellowish eyes behind a pair of wire-rimmed spectacles and a certain rangy, loping grace even though he walked with a slight limp.”

We Say: Internet speculation seems to have focused on Liam Neeson, who would be a fine choice if he could channel some of that Ra’s al Ghul magic. But he’s a little too demur for our tastes. Scrimgeour has spent a lifetime fighting dark wizards, is arrogant and somewhat bitter. He’s forceful and strong. Maybe it’s as simple as the fact that he’s described as having a “loping grace even though he walked with a slight limp,” but, combine everything, and we can’t think of anyone who’d be a better fit than HUGH LAURIE.

Alternates: We’d love to find a place for Bill Nighy in the series, and this is probably as close to a perfect match as there is left.

MARVOLO GAUNT:

Book Says: Voldemort’s grandfather, heir to Salazar Slytherin. Short and with odd proportions. “Bright brown eyes, short scrubby hair, and wrinkled face.” Looks to Harry like an old, but powerful, monkey.

We Say: For some reason fans are clamoring here for Jeremy Irons, who’s far too regal and intimidating to play Marvolo, a decrepit, hateful wizard who’s more of a bully than a real threat. We need someone compact, someone scary in small spaces, someone who looks, not like the true heir to Slytherin, but like the last, sad vestige of a once proud family. We need BOB HOSKINS.

Alternates: Alfred Molina. John Rhys-Davis.

MEROPE GAUNT:

Book Says: Voldemort’s mother. 18-years-old with a “plain, pale, rather heavy face.” Defeated and beaten down. Cross-eyed.

We Say: There’s no delicate way to say this without coming off as crass…so I won’t. I’ll just say that EILEEN WALSH would be a perfect fit.

Alternates: Amy Winehouse.

MORFIN GAUNT:

Book Says: Voldemort’s uncle. “Several of his teeth were missing. His eyes were small and dark and stared in opposite directions.” Harry can’t tell what color his hair is because it’s so matted down with dirt. Sociopath, only speaks in parseltongue.

We Say: Not exactly a role actors will be beating down the doors at Warner Brothers to play, considering he only speaks in hisses. We don’t know if there’s a more pivotal character narratively, however, since it’s his curse on Tom Riddle which ultimately allows Merope to woo the dandy Muggle. Insane and dark? We’d love to see RHYS IFANS give it a whack.

Alternates: What about Cillian Murphy? We’d peg him to play the young Voldemort if he wasn’t too old, but playing the uncle of He-Who-Should-Not-Be-Named would actually be a pretty striking physical match. And anyone who saw his take on the Scarecrow knows he can do demented. Nick Frost would be a different approach, but one we could potentially get behind as well.

FENIR GREYBACK:

Book Says: Werewolf. Described as a “big, rangy man with matted gray hair and whiskers [and]…long yellowish nails.” Has pointed fangs even while human. Lupin calls him, “perhaps, the most savage werewolf alive today. He regards it as his mission in life to bite and to contaminate as many people as possible; he wants to create enough werewolves to overcome the wizards.”

We Say: A terrifying beast who preys on children. Savage. Uncompromising. DANIEL DAY LEWIS. And if you don’t immediately agree with us, just look at this picture and despair.

Alternates: None. Daniel Day Lewis. Seriously, get him. (But if we must, this is actually the role Jeremy Irons was made for here, not Marvolo.)

HORACE SLUGHORN:

Book Says: Short and “enormously fat” with a walrus like mustache and pale, gooseberry eyes. Bald. Has a taste for luxury, often wearing lavish, old fashioned clothes or velvet smoking jackets. After first meeting him, Harry imagines Slughorn as a giant spider, collecting his prize pupils like flies. Head of Slytherin.

We Say: He’s large and affable, and something of a caricature, but at no point is he comical. Slughorn is as close an intellectual match to Dumbledore as anyone we meet in the series. He’s prideful, resourceful, and commands instant respect. His ultimate breakdown is one of the emotional highpoints of “Half Blood Prince,” so any potential actor would need to be able to play both sides, the gregariousness along with the scared retreat. We like ANTHONY HOPKINS.

Alternates: Should Bob Hoskins be passed over for Marvolo (or just want a bigger role), we think he’d be a good match for Slughorn as well.

NARCISSA MALFOY:

Book Says: Mother of Draco, wife to Lucius. An Aryan dream: blond with blue eyes. Harry says she has “a look that suggested there was a nasty smell under her nose.”

We Say: Too bad Nicole Kidman is Australian, cause she’d be a perfect fit. With her out of the running, however, we like “Nip/Tuck’s” Joely Richardson for the role, who seems to combine the ideal combination of good looks and haughty disdain.

Alternates: If you can’t get Kidman, why not go for her best friend? Naomi Watts would be an interesting choice, especially considering Narcissa’s one big scene in “Half Blood Prince,” is sure to be when she makes an Unbreakable Vow with Snape, pleading for him to help her son. We can see Watts do desperate.

Do you agree with our choices? Have different ideas? ACCIO COMMENTS!

  1. More so than finding the right characters, I think fans should push for a longer movie, especially the last one. It would be nice if JKR could get her encyclopedia out before the last movie so we could see a synopsis of all the characters, (for those that dont read the books). Maybe MTV could help with this. :)
  2. I think Jonathan Rhys Meyers would be perfect for young Voldemort. Just see Match Point.
  3. I think Jonathan Rhys Meyers would be perfect as young Voldemort. Just see Match Point.
  4. Your Greyback choices are too young. He has to be old enough we could believe he bit Remus Lupin (David Thewlis) as a toddler. Want a wild man? How about Billy Connolly. Take a look at the guy when he's in big hair and beard mode, he'd look old enough.

Natasha Richardson for Narcissa would work great and maybe that could get you her husband Liam Neeson.
  5. Fenrir Greyback : Vinnie Jones

    Horace Slughorn : Jim Broadbent

Rufus Scrimgeour : Gerard Butler..wouldn't hurt to have a sexy Minister of Magic :)

    Narcissa Malfoy : Rosamund Pike

And please, please for the love of Dobby change Helena Bonham Carter as Bellatrix!! She's not right! Cast Aishwarya Rai, instead...dark, heavy-lidded eyes, etc..she'll be perfect!!!
  6. Jonathon rhys-Meyers will be perfect for Morfin Gaunt, he has a manic look. or maybe Luke Mably from The Prince and Me

The perfect Marvolo Gaunt should be Bob Hoskins but Hugh Laurie is also a perfect cast

Merope Gaunt..Naomi Watts? blank suits her best :) but I don't know..she might be a little too old

    Young Voldemort..Orlando Bloom!! ;)
  7. RUFUS SCRIMGEOUR: Bill Nighy

MEROPE GAUNT: I think they should do an open cast call for this character.

    FENIR GREYBACK: Ian McKellen

    HORACE SLUGHORN: Bernard Fox

    NARCISSA MALFOY: Tilda Swinton

I was toying with the idea of Ozzy Osborne as Greyback, heh. What a laugh.
  8. Bill nighy for Rufus Scrimgeour. Naomi Watts for Narcissa Malfoy. I dont really mind about the rest. I think that there should be alot more open castings.

Ive scrolled down and seen a load of people asking 'When are castings?' and 'Im American, can i get a role?'. Well as Hogwarts is a british school, only british actors/actresses are aloud. JKR has been very clear on this. Supposedely America has its own Wizards school.

P.S Orlando Bloom for Tom Riddle Snr.

P.P.S Hugh laurie for Alecto Carrow. I think he'd pull that off nicely :D
  9. I think a great choice for Horace Slughorn should be Jim Broadbent. Give him the same mustache he had in Moulin Rouge and a few extra pounds and he would be great for the part!
  10. Donald Sutherland for Rufus Scrimgeour....he's got the commanding presence and intense eyes. Check him out here: http://www.nndb.com/people/531/000023462/donald-sutherland.jpg
  11. How can someone sign up for extras in the next two movies. I'm american, but seeing how if i would be an extra i dont think it matters
  12. I would adore to be casted in the last 2 Potter film, since I am British myself you's think it'd be easy to go to a casting call even for extras, but no. If an American can be casted then I think I should at least have that chance at the audition.
  13. I mostly agree with the article's comments regarding casting choices.
The whole "rumours" thing about Watts, Fiennes, and Townsend might just mean that the actors are currently negotiating with the studio and don't want any definitive statement just yet. Obviously if they're true then Naomi is definitely playing Narcissa Malfoy, and I think Townsend would play Morfin and that Fiennes would play his brother's father.
Besides Hoskins as Horace Slughorn, I have another idea: Ian McNiece. He fits the bill physically, and with the right walrus moustache he'd be utterly brilliant, in my opinion.
  14. Horace Slughorn = Jim Broadbent
    Rufus Scrimgeour = Bill Nighy
    Fenir Greyback = Jeremy Irons
    Narcissa Malfoy = Tilda Swinton
    Marvolo Gaunt = Bob Hoskins
    Merope Gaunt = Amy Winehouse
    Morfin Gaunt = Robert Carlyle
Tom Riddle Jr. (after Hogwarts while working at Borgin & Burkes) = Cillian Murphy

    That is all...
  15. Why on earth would it matter what accent you have if you're an extra?!? If I remember correctly, there are a fair number of extras (students at hogwarts) without speaking parts. Anybody no matter their nationality should be able to be cast there....
  16. Why on earth would it matter what accent you have if you're an extra?!? If I remember correctly, there are a fair number of extras (students at hogwarts) without speaking parts. Anybody no matter their nationality should be able to be cast there....I can, however, understand why the major characters should be English. With that said, I too am interested in auditioning as an extra for the upcoming films. Any info is greatly appreciated!
  17. Hi everyone, sorry but if you get any information on auditions for a girl in Harry Potter please e-mail me on good_charlotte_jessica@hotmail.com

It has been my dream since I was like 5 so please contact me if you see anything.

    Thanks x
  18. P.S. Even if it's an extra.

Also, I'm from England, which is handy as the auditions are usually in London.

    Ciao x
  19. Great Choices. who knows what will happen, the movies leave so many important things out that they might leave out one of these important characters. I guess we'll see!
  20. I can totally see Hoskins as Slughorn. I think someone who was overlooked as Fenrir Greyback though was Tony Curran. He played Marcus Corvinus in Underworld Evolution, and i think he would make a wonderful Greyback.
  21. Hey you guys! Does anyone know
if Romilda Vane is going to be
in this movie? If you hear ANYTHING
    please e-mail me!

    berriestar123@yahoo.com
  22. Jeremy Irons- Fenrir Greyback
I like Bob Hoskins for Slughorn as well.
  23. I totally agree with all your picks! I believe they'd do very well to get Naomi Watts. I would highly reccomend it! She'd be the perfect Narcissa.
  24. My mom would love to see Laurie play Scrimguer. She has a huge chush on Laurie,Rickman,(Snape)and Issacs.(Lucius)
  25. Hey, i would really appreciate it if u could email me some casting information. particurally of Lavender Brown. :]]
  26. Right well I'm an actor haha and ppl on here are sayin crazy things like Orlando Bloom is a good actor, alright he's a very good lookin guy, but he's not a very good actor, come off it! lol Nah I reckon Irons or Daniel Day Lewis should be Greyback, they r both amazing actors, and I think Helena Bonham Carter is AWESOME as Bellatrix, whoever said she wasnt is mad! lol She's an amazin actress, and I love Julie WAlters aswell, she's class, but anyway, I reckon Nicole Kidman would be good! She's not as strong as the others maybe, but she is obviously quite good, and she isnt supposed to be strong, she's supposed to be quite week. More to the point she looks a bit like Helena Bonham Carter, more than the others, and u have to remember that they are sisters. And she'd look good with Jason Isaacs. I reckon she'd be class, I also think Anthony Hopkins and Bob Hoskins are both suitable for Slughorn and Bill Nighy is a legend so I do want him as the Minister, but looking at pictures, Donald Sutherland is a very good call! HE looks exactly how Scrimgeour should! haha and thats my rant over and done with!
  27. Does anyone know if it's true that they're only casting British residents? Is this only for the main characters to maintain the common accent? I'm eager to know if supporting and extra cast can be from the States or Aus.
We buy the books, see the movies and pick up the merchandise like we're under the Imperius spell - it should be open to us!!! Does anyone know for fact?
  28. Albert Finney would be a great Slughorn!!

Now that I've read #7 I think the part Jo had in mind for Bob Hoskins may have been Xeno Lovegood! He's be perfect for that!
  29. Attention Everyone!!!

It has been confirmed that Naomi Watts will NOT be play Narcissa Malfoy in the upcoming Harry Potter and the Half-blood Prince.
  30. Hugh Laurie would be great for the part of Scrimgeour.
  31. Hugh Laurie would be awesome as Scrimgeour. I love House :)
  32. YUP Nancy Carole, It's a fact, onlu uk residents can be cast! It's a F shame!!! Cheers
  33. i think i would b a great person to play lavender brown or romilda vane. ive always wanted to act but my parents wont support me..... so if somebody would plz pass this meessage on thatd b great... im 14 but i look 16 or 17 and its my dream to act in 1 of these movies
  34. HWAAAA....i reallyreallyreallyreally hope that CILLIAN MURPHY will play the young VOLDEMORT...!!!
Believe me, Cillian is the right person to play one of the voldemort's family (or even play as voldemort himself).... :):):):):):):)
  35. Why cant Nicole Kidman be in the movie im sure she could easily fly over to britan.
  36. Sven - thanx 4 the reply.
Does NE1 else see an issue with UK only cast? I think that's a bit, oh, um, discriminatory. If it was in the USA everyone owuld be up in arms about it. That's a shame. Hollywodd would never put those types of limits on the casting. Perhaps those out of the UK should stop supporting the films---unless anyone knows a transfiguration charm to show that I am a UK resident! :-)
  37. When I read the sixth book, I invisioned Slughorn as Albert Finney. He's a classic actor. He can play comedic and serious. His voice is also quite interesting. The moment he reveals the secret of the horcruxes will be pretty gripping with him telling it. He'd make a great slughorn! Bob hoskins is a good suggestion also but Albert Finney, after his performance as Churchill in A Gathering Storm, has just got something british about him.
  38. What makes you think that most of these A-list actors would want to be in HP6, esp. in such small parts. I mean goodluck getting the likes of Kidman, McKellan, Neeson etc doing a 3 scene gig.
  39. Scrimgeour - when I was reading book 6 I always pictured him as looking like Sam Elliot (do we think he could do an English accent?). I think Bill Nighy has that quietly dangerous feel to him which is lovely to watch but I imagine Scrimgeour as being a large physically commanding presence who radiates his power and experience more openly - Liam Neeson defiantly has size in his favour there (although if that’s the criteria what about Christopher Lee or Jeff Goldblum …?)

Slughorn - Much as I love Stephen Fry I must put my vote in AGAINST him playing Slughorn - I can’t see that at all - I’d have to go for Don Warrington - I know it’s a bit of a curve-ball but I think he’d be perfect.

Cillian Murphy would do a fab Tom Riddle but wasn’t there already someone cast for that in film 2?
  40. Cate Blanchett for Narcissa Malfoy. Sam Waterston for Scrimgeour, not a Brit, but he'd be great.
  41. I like Harry Potter so much. And I would like to play in a scene in the Film . I am frome Austria.
    Please can anyone help me????

    I LOOOOOVE HARRY POTTER FILM'S!!
  42. Rufus Scrimgeour: Just last night, I was reading this character's "confrontation" with Harry during Christmas. The only actor I could "hear" playing this part is DAVID WARNER.

Horace Slughorn: J.K. Rowling's descriptions just scream DANNY DEVITO, British or not.
  43. ok, my dream has always been, and will always be, to be a famous actress. I am soooo bummed that only British redidents can audition for ANY role in the harry potter films!! I really really really think they should have auditions in America. I dont think its fair that only British residents can have a part in this. I mean who wouldnt want to be in harry potter?!?!?! I think it should be open to Americans as well. We suport the books along with the movies. I really wanted to be Lavender Brown in the upcomming movie. I fit the character and its my dream to act. The only thing is I couldnt audition because i live in America. :( I bet there is a million people saying this so why not??
  44. p.s.
If you could e-mail me any upcomming auditions for the 7th movie, that would be great!
And I really think they should have auditions in the U.S. as well so people like me could full fill their dreams.
  45. I think I would be good in harry potter I can do the accent And I am a great actress beat that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  46. The reason they cant have american actors is that JK Rowling expressed a wish that the cast be all british. Considering the whole book takes place in Britain and there are no American characters, i say the Americans are just jealous that Britain has JK Rowling, one of the greatest authors of all time. Plus, British actors are better.
  47. Well im writing a letter to the casting director to ask about open auditions because i think i have missed my chance and i want to find out! i think that fenir greyback will probably be castto some one who isnt old, but looks mental and has a lot of hair!
  48. I think my auntie who acts and paints should play Narcissa or Tonks Mum. She is scary looking and always frightens my mates. She is playing the creepy, evil Medea on stage at the moment. You can see her pic at this website: www.artwanted.com/osavvidis
  49. If Scrimegour has a mane of hair with gray streaks and an elegant stride, despite a limp... a lifetime spent battling evil...

Does he absolutely have to be a Brit?

I read the description and immediately thought of Sam Elliot, especially circa "Roadhouse" when he was pure badass. I think he could grow his hair back out and nail it.

    Seriously.
  50. And I don't care about "fair to Americans" or anything like that.

I just think he could kick ass.
