Casting Call: ‘Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince’

'Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince'When J.K. Rowling went on Britain’s Jonathan Ross show and said she would like to see veteran actor Bob Hoskins cast in at least one of the Harry Potter movies, all we could think was, well, no duh. “I’d love to play a wizard,” he said. And we’d love it too, since we think he’d fit into the world perfectly.

Could director David Yates think so as well? Approached by MTV News at the L.A. premiere of “Order of the Phoenix,” Yates said he was wrapping up a deal for an actor to play Potions master Horace Slughorn. We couldn’t let the fact that he didn’t reveal who it actually was slow us down, so we looked at the major roles up for grabs in “Half-Blood Prince” and offer up our best suggestions. Agree or disagree, let us know your own thoughts in our comments below.

RUFUS SCRIMGEOUR:

Book Says: Minister of Magic. “[He] looked rather like an old lion. There were streaks of grey in his mane of tawny hair and his bushy eyebrows; he had keen yellowish eyes behind a pair of wire-rimmed spectacles and a certain rangy, loping grace even though he walked with a slight limp.”

We Say: Internet speculation seems to have focused on Liam Neeson, who would be a fine choice if he could channel some of that Ra’s al Ghul magic. But he’s a little too demur for our tastes. Scrimgeour has spent a lifetime fighting dark wizards, is arrogant and somewhat bitter. He’s forceful and strong. Maybe it’s as simple as the fact that he’s described as having a “loping grace even though he walked with a slight limp,” but, combine everything, and we can’t think of anyone who’d be a better fit than HUGH LAURIE.

Alternates: We’d love to find a place for Bill Nighy in the series, and this is probably as close to a perfect match as there is left.

MARVOLO GAUNT:

Book Says: Voldemort’s grandfather, heir to Salazar Slytherin. Short and with odd proportions. “Bright brown eyes, short scrubby hair, and wrinkled face.” Looks to Harry like an old, but powerful, monkey.

We Say: For some reason fans are clamoring here for Jeremy Irons, who’s far too regal and intimidating to play Marvolo, a decrepit, hateful wizard who’s more of a bully than a real threat. We need someone compact, someone scary in small spaces, someone who looks, not like the true heir to Slytherin, but like the last, sad vestige of a once proud family. We need BOB HOSKINS.

Alternates: Alfred Molina. John Rhys-Davis.

MEROPE GAUNT:

Book Says: Voldemort’s mother. 18-years-old with a “plain, pale, rather heavy face.” Defeated and beaten down. Cross-eyed.

We Say: There’s no delicate way to say this without coming off as crass…so I won’t. I’ll just say that EILEEN WALSH would be a perfect fit.

Alternates: Amy Winehouse.

MORFIN GAUNT:

Book Says: Voldemort’s uncle. “Several of his teeth were missing. His eyes were small and dark and stared in opposite directions.” Harry can’t tell what color his hair is because it’s so matted down with dirt. Sociopath, only speaks in parseltongue.

We Say: Not exactly a role actors will be beating down the doors at Warner Brothers to play, considering he only speaks in hisses. We don’t know if there’s a more pivotal character narratively, however, since it’s his curse on Tom Riddle which ultimately allows Merope to woo the dandy Muggle. Insane and dark? We’d love to see RHYS IFANS give it a whack.

Alternates: What about Cillian Murphy? We’d peg him to play the young Voldemort if he wasn’t too old, but playing the uncle of He-Who-Should-Not-Be-Named would actually be a pretty striking physical match. And anyone who saw his take on the Scarecrow knows he can do demented. Nick Frost would be a different approach, but one we could potentially get behind as well.

FENIR GREYBACK:

Book Says: Werewolf. Described as a “big, rangy man with matted gray hair and whiskers [and]…long yellowish nails.” Has pointed fangs even while human. Lupin calls him, “perhaps, the most savage werewolf alive today. He regards it as his mission in life to bite and to contaminate as many people as possible; he wants to create enough werewolves to overcome the wizards.”

We Say: A terrifying beast who preys on children. Savage. Uncompromising. DANIEL DAY LEWIS. And if you don’t immediately agree with us, just look at this picture and despair.

Alternates: None. Daniel Day Lewis. Seriously, get him. (But if we must, this is actually the role Jeremy Irons was made for here, not Marvolo.)

HORACE SLUGHORN:

Book Says: Short and “enormously fat” with a walrus like mustache and pale, gooseberry eyes. Bald. Has a taste for luxury, often wearing lavish, old fashioned clothes or velvet smoking jackets. After first meeting him, Harry imagines Slughorn as a giant spider, collecting his prize pupils like flies. Head of Slytherin.

We Say: He’s large and affable, and something of a caricature, but at no point is he comical. Slughorn is as close an intellectual match to Dumbledore as anyone we meet in the series. He’s prideful, resourceful, and commands instant respect. His ultimate breakdown is one of the emotional highpoints of “Half Blood Prince,” so any potential actor would need to be able to play both sides, the gregariousness along with the scared retreat. We like ANTHONY HOPKINS.

Alternates: Should Bob Hoskins be passed over for Marvolo (or just want a bigger role), we think he’d be a good match for Slughorn as well.

NARCISSA MALFOY:

Book Says: Mother of Draco, wife to Lucius. An Aryan dream: blond with blue eyes. Harry says she has “a look that suggested there was a nasty smell under her nose.”

We Say: Too bad Nicole Kidman is Australian, cause she’d be a perfect fit. With her out of the running, however, we like “Nip/Tuck’s” Joely Richardson for the role, who seems to combine the ideal combination of good looks and haughty disdain.

Alternates: If you can’t get Kidman, why not go for her best friend? Naomi Watts would be an interesting choice, especially considering Narcissa’s one big scene in “Half Blood Prince,” is sure to be when she makes an Unbreakable Vow with Snape, pleading for him to help her son. We can see Watts do desperate.

Do you agree with our choices? Have different ideas? ACCIO COMMENTS!

  1. I would love to play Lavender Brown I have lots of acting experience I've been acting since I was 3
  2. I can act! I wanna audition! Too bad no one auditions big movies in Tennessee. I HATE LIVING IN A TINY TOWN! Haha.
  3. the part of lavender brown would be so fun to play!! i'm almost seventeen and i'm british. if anybody has any details about being in the movie, contact me!
  4. Are they going to cast nothing but Veterans? I hope not. I would personally like to play the part of Merope Gaunt (Voldemort's mother) I'm 23, but I have a very youthful appearance. (this part is a little embarrassing, but...) I was really crosseyed as a child! I still have a lazy eye, although it's gotten alot better over the years, but I could cross it again with ease just for the part. I think it would be a good fit. And I have a pale face that is a bit heavy by Hollywood standards. Check out my page!! (if you can find me on Myspace: bubbleflowers) And when are those casting calls??
Peace, love and Harry Potter! (yah, I'm a dork... I know)
  5. I can see that there are alot of people leaving comments about how they would like to play a part in the movie "The Half Blood Prince" and this is another one. I love acting I've been in a school play and i would love an audition if you would give me the chance. Drop me a line at my E-Mail and I'll do my best to get back.
  6. I think Johnny Depp should be casted as one of the new characters in the movie!
  7. I think that there should be no (already) big movie stars in the next movies. I want to be introduced to someone new... look how well the trio did!
  8. i think sean connery would make a good scrimgeour, hasanyone considered that?
  9. Wow, enough talk about myself!!!

I think you guys did a WICKED job of picking out who should be Luna Lovegood!!! I mean, it was just a SHOCKER!! I loved it! The Order of the phoinex is my favourite one so far!!For nowww at least.....

    !*FaDuMo*!
P.S. Christina Martin I think you would be WICKED if u got a part good luck
  10. How could you not instantly demand that Mackenzie Crook get the part of Morfin Gaunt?

I always pictured Narcissa with the appearance and presence of a combination of a(40ish) Helen Mirren and Meryl Streep (not for casting, since she's American, just in persona).
  11. Obviously tons and tons of people, not only in the US, but in other countries as well want SOME role in The Half-Blood Prince. And I suppose I'm no different. I'd be perfectly happy playing an extra! And I'd do it 100%. I have done many plays at the various schools I've attended, have won many awards for vocals, etc. I'm not trying to brag, honestly. I am just a huge fan of the books, films, and just film-making in general and would love to be apart of such a GREAT opportunity. Please, if anyone has ANY info whatsoever, contact me. I would do anything [move, dye my hair, lose/gain weight, travel, etc] to get a role.
    Thanks again!
    :]
  12. But to get on topic, I would love to see Naomi Watts play Narcissa. She's a brilliant actress, and when I was reading the book, I imagined her playing the part.
  13. Hello, I'm Victoria and sadly I am American too. 14 years old, but I look closer to 16 and that is the EXACT age for her in HBP. I know practially everthing for Harry Potter, I'm a HUGE fanatic to say the least.
I'm close to 5'7" if not taller. I do an amazing english accent. It's been know to fool people. I have brown hair with hints of red shoulder length. Brown eyes with specks of blue and green.
I have family friends who live in London that would be happy to take me in if I got the part. And my own high quality school robe with the Gryffindor patch. And a bit of acting experiance, school plays.
  14. alex is a show off
  15. no ones gonna get in unless there known or go to a try out
  16. I think it'd be pretty sweet to just be an extra in an HP movie. Just being on the set would be amazing.
  17. I am of course talking about, Lavender Brown. Haha sorry. Forgot to add that [:

And: I don't know why but I can see Hugh Jackman as Scrimgeour. To bad hes australian!
  18. If only I were British. Ever since Sorcerer's Stone, it's been one of my dreams to play in the Harry Potter movies! Even if I got to play an extra! It would be a truly amazing experience! People tell me I look a lot older for my age, and I have an excellent British accent. If you hear anything about auditions, e-mail me.
  19. Do all of you honestly think that MTV has ANY influence over casting for Harry Potter? Because they don't... all of you, especially the Americans, are wasting your time writing all of these messages saying you want the part and for someone to email you. The movies only cast Brits into the rolls - or whatever else person they need, Irish, etc. And more over, the casters for the movie won't be wasting their time looking at some MTV movie blog. They'll be spending their time at auditions finding a REAL actor.
So if you're British, and you think you can act, get yourself an agent and haul your butt over across the pond.
  20. I'm also one of the biggest Harry Potter fanatics you will EVER meet!
  21. for Narcissa, what about Sienna Guillory? I think she'd make a brilliant Narcissa, seeing as she is so pretty. I wish I wasn't so young, I'd go for the role!!
  22. It would be awesome to play Lavender in the new movie.Actually it would be pretty awesome to play an extra in the movie. I’ve got a pretty good English accent but no acting experience. But even so you can always try. I love Evanna Lynch (Luna Lovegood) I think she is perfect for Luna. But like I said being in a HP movie would be the best thing in the world. Does anyone know how you figure that out?
  23. who's playing lavender brown, and can you tell me what's shes suppose to look like? please
  24. I think the charater should be fresh or new to bring mystery to the screen as portraided in the book. But if anything Viggo Mortensen would make a good werewolf.
  25. Umm...Auditions?? Where and when will they be held?
  26. Does any one know if there's a casting call in the U.S.? I would love to even play an extra even if I was in the very back. If you hear anything, please, let me know. Oh, how amazing would that be?
  27. I think it would be awsome to play in Harry Potter HBP... im half british but im also african american so i have no idea where id fit in if i did get the part...
  28. I like your suggestions except, I don't think famous people should be cast in HP. They should be slightly less famous otherwise, HP won't seem like HP. It'll be like Pirates Of The Carribean. :C
  29. i am 12 years old and i love acting! not to brag, but i am also a very good actress too. i would love to be in one of these films, i can do a british accent to! email me about auditions, i would be honored.
    thanks,
    nichole
  30. ALex you sound like an an awesome Actresss....

WoooWWW I LOVE harry potter 2
  31. i love the choices for who should be who. except, i think scrimgeour should be someone else.

GET BACK TO ME ON AUDITIONS PLEASE =]
  32. Sorry, Nichole. Only Brits can be cast. It's a weird rule, I know... : (
  33. Just out of curiosity, are there and casting calls for extras?
  34. Hugh Laurie is PERFECT for Scrimgeour. I never even thought of him before...

    : D
  35. When are auditions? I don't care if they're in England (But it would be awsome if they were in the U.S. as well). I love acting and I would love being in a Harry Potter film.
  36. yah that rule about Brits only being able to be casted is kinda random,, but my question is, if you have descendents from Britian, can you be castes,, cause i know i have descendents close descendents, and bloody hell i can talk like one to, lol i really do wish that would be a possiblity cause i'm really good and could play a great female part, but anyhow, todaloo for now ~Scotta~
  37. I have a few, Vego would make a great warewolf, and I have a couple of others but I'll have to come back becase they come from some obsure brit and amrican shows and indy films. but how do you get on the behind the camra crew, can't act my way out of a paperbag but would love to do set, costums, efects, or something elce. always was more intrested in that kind of stuff anyways.

anyway so far the casting has been great not perfect, but nobody is perfect, so I trust that whoever they get will be great. and look forword to seeing who they choose.
  38. Ok, I also would like to know if there are any casting calls in the United States for extras....
  39. casting calls for anywere that most of us could get to would be wicked, and i think just getting some people from the us would mix the cultures a bit, i think that getting some other nationalities in some of these shows would greatly liven up the films, yes they're good just as they are but it would make it a bit better
  40. Bob Hoskins would be a perfect match for Slughorn. How about Kate Beckinsale for Merope? Yes, she is beautiful but make up artists can make anyone look ugly.
  41. The whole point of finding the right person to play Lavendar is that she has to be cute but she can not outshine Emma, because you see Emma as Hermoine is Ron's soulmate and they are the two that will end up together in the end. We all know that. So, for those who keep suggesting Keira K, and some of the other big names for that part you kinda need to keep the whole picture in mind. We know Ron and Hermoine are totally meant for eachother and once they do get together it will be pretty explosive I'm sure. So, for the good of the storyline, let's find someone who is not quite as cute as Emma.
  42. it wont matter if the lavender charictor is as cute or cuter than emma cause no matter what hermiony and ron will be together even if lavender is cuter than hermiony ~Scotta~
  43. WHY CANT I BE CAST AS ONE OF THE BAD PPL IN THE MOVIE!...lol.... i could do well you know
    ..lol..iam serious..i can be BAD!...lol
  44. bad or good it doesn't matter,, either way, we are s.o.l.
  45. i know rite!
i so badly wanna be in this movie... as some charector..i willing to drop everything and go where ever they call me to go to do it!!..lol
  46. I would really like to play Merope Gaunt. I'm 23. Weird fact: I was crosseyed my whole life, but not so badly anymore. I had to wear a friggin patch as a child. LOL, I looked like a pirate...Argghhh. Sometimes you can see that crossed eye. Thank you if you think that would be wicked (someone said that earlier). I'm on Myspace as bubbleflowers. I love having visitors!
by the way, it's really sad that they only cast Brits, but I sure they will find someone really great for those parts. My boyfriend is in London, he lives there. Yeah, yeah I know, internet romance. But it's been 5 months, and I'm absolutely crazy about him. Maybe I'll visit soon... like for the greenbelt festival. THAT would be WICKED!!!
  47. Tony Blair cameo as the muggle prime minister. That would just be funny. Although I expect the scene will not be included since its not that important.
  48. i Canot wait for the movie and the book. i think that the person who plays narcissa should be nicole richie because she is blonde and thin and she has that (bad smell under nose ) look down. no one can replace emma daniel and rupert. never. i personally cant believe that harry looks so much like daniel. emma is soooooooo cool. morfin gaunt ( vol-you know who's uncle) should be played by jhonny depp. is there two orlando blooms? one in pirates of the caribean and one in thats so raven. has anybody noticed that?
  49. dude your using my word (wicked) not worries, lol yah i know i really wish that americans could be too,, i would ROCK the movie soo good,, lol
  50. i just want to be in it!...
    and i know i can do GR8!!..
    lol
    i WANT A ROLE!!...lol
