Casting Call: ‘Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince’

'Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince'When J.K. Rowling went on Britain’s Jonathan Ross show and said she would like to see veteran actor Bob Hoskins cast in at least one of the Harry Potter movies, all we could think was, well, no duh. “I’d love to play a wizard,” he said. And we’d love it too, since we think he’d fit into the world perfectly.

Could director David Yates think so as well? Approached by MTV News at the L.A. premiere of “Order of the Phoenix,” Yates said he was wrapping up a deal for an actor to play Potions master Horace Slughorn. We couldn’t let the fact that he didn’t reveal who it actually was slow us down, so we looked at the major roles up for grabs in “Half-Blood Prince” and offer up our best suggestions. Agree or disagree, let us know your own thoughts in our comments below.

RUFUS SCRIMGEOUR:

Book Says: Minister of Magic. “[He] looked rather like an old lion. There were streaks of grey in his mane of tawny hair and his bushy eyebrows; he had keen yellowish eyes behind a pair of wire-rimmed spectacles and a certain rangy, loping grace even though he walked with a slight limp.”

We Say: Internet speculation seems to have focused on Liam Neeson, who would be a fine choice if he could channel some of that Ra’s al Ghul magic. But he’s a little too demur for our tastes. Scrimgeour has spent a lifetime fighting dark wizards, is arrogant and somewhat bitter. He’s forceful and strong. Maybe it’s as simple as the fact that he’s described as having a “loping grace even though he walked with a slight limp,” but, combine everything, and we can’t think of anyone who’d be a better fit than HUGH LAURIE.

Alternates: We’d love to find a place for Bill Nighy in the series, and this is probably as close to a perfect match as there is left.

MARVOLO GAUNT:

Book Says: Voldemort’s grandfather, heir to Salazar Slytherin. Short and with odd proportions. “Bright brown eyes, short scrubby hair, and wrinkled face.” Looks to Harry like an old, but powerful, monkey.

We Say: For some reason fans are clamoring here for Jeremy Irons, who’s far too regal and intimidating to play Marvolo, a decrepit, hateful wizard who’s more of a bully than a real threat. We need someone compact, someone scary in small spaces, someone who looks, not like the true heir to Slytherin, but like the last, sad vestige of a once proud family. We need BOB HOSKINS.

Alternates: Alfred Molina. John Rhys-Davis.

MEROPE GAUNT:

Book Says: Voldemort’s mother. 18-years-old with a “plain, pale, rather heavy face.” Defeated and beaten down. Cross-eyed.

We Say: There’s no delicate way to say this without coming off as crass…so I won’t. I’ll just say that EILEEN WALSH would be a perfect fit.

Alternates: Amy Winehouse.

MORFIN GAUNT:

Book Says: Voldemort’s uncle. “Several of his teeth were missing. His eyes were small and dark and stared in opposite directions.” Harry can’t tell what color his hair is because it’s so matted down with dirt. Sociopath, only speaks in parseltongue.

We Say: Not exactly a role actors will be beating down the doors at Warner Brothers to play, considering he only speaks in hisses. We don’t know if there’s a more pivotal character narratively, however, since it’s his curse on Tom Riddle which ultimately allows Merope to woo the dandy Muggle. Insane and dark? We’d love to see RHYS IFANS give it a whack.

Alternates: What about Cillian Murphy? We’d peg him to play the young Voldemort if he wasn’t too old, but playing the uncle of He-Who-Should-Not-Be-Named would actually be a pretty striking physical match. And anyone who saw his take on the Scarecrow knows he can do demented. Nick Frost would be a different approach, but one we could potentially get behind as well.

FENIR GREYBACK:

Book Says: Werewolf. Described as a “big, rangy man with matted gray hair and whiskers [and]…long yellowish nails.” Has pointed fangs even while human. Lupin calls him, “perhaps, the most savage werewolf alive today. He regards it as his mission in life to bite and to contaminate as many people as possible; he wants to create enough werewolves to overcome the wizards.”

We Say: A terrifying beast who preys on children. Savage. Uncompromising. DANIEL DAY LEWIS. And if you don’t immediately agree with us, just look at this picture and despair.

Alternates: None. Daniel Day Lewis. Seriously, get him. (But if we must, this is actually the role Jeremy Irons was made for here, not Marvolo.)

HORACE SLUGHORN:

Book Says: Short and “enormously fat” with a walrus like mustache and pale, gooseberry eyes. Bald. Has a taste for luxury, often wearing lavish, old fashioned clothes or velvet smoking jackets. After first meeting him, Harry imagines Slughorn as a giant spider, collecting his prize pupils like flies. Head of Slytherin.

We Say: He’s large and affable, and something of a caricature, but at no point is he comical. Slughorn is as close an intellectual match to Dumbledore as anyone we meet in the series. He’s prideful, resourceful, and commands instant respect. His ultimate breakdown is one of the emotional highpoints of “Half Blood Prince,” so any potential actor would need to be able to play both sides, the gregariousness along with the scared retreat. We like ANTHONY HOPKINS.

Alternates: Should Bob Hoskins be passed over for Marvolo (or just want a bigger role), we think he’d be a good match for Slughorn as well.

NARCISSA MALFOY:

Book Says: Mother of Draco, wife to Lucius. An Aryan dream: blond with blue eyes. Harry says she has “a look that suggested there was a nasty smell under her nose.”

We Say: Too bad Nicole Kidman is Australian, cause she’d be a perfect fit. With her out of the running, however, we like “Nip/Tuck’s” Joely Richardson for the role, who seems to combine the ideal combination of good looks and haughty disdain.

Alternates: If you can’t get Kidman, why not go for her best friend? Naomi Watts would be an interesting choice, especially considering Narcissa’s one big scene in “Half Blood Prince,” is sure to be when she makes an Unbreakable Vow with Snape, pleading for him to help her son. We can see Watts do desperate.

Do you agree with our choices? Have different ideas? ACCIO COMMENTS!

  1. how did you see a picture of her?
  2. mmh.. since everyone is asking about auditions, couldn't you send a standard mail to everyone with information (or just some contacts)?

[or maybe not, because you won't read this. or will you?]
  3. JK Rowling specifically requested that all teh actors be British. Sorry guys! I know I was bummed too. They already hld Lavender auditions in Britain, as well as one for the young Tom Riddle. Nicole Kidman or Naomi WAtts would be perfect for Narcissa. But, I think Kidman is a better actress. She can really pull "mean" off.
  4. MARVOLO GAUNT: Bob Hoskins, Peter Ackroyd, John Hurt

MEROPE GAUNT: Eileen Walsh, Samantha Giles, Sarah-Jane Potts

MORFIN GAUNT: Michael Caine, Joseph Fiennes, Phil McDermott, Sasha Cohen

FENIR GREYBACK: Brian Blessed, John Rhys-Davies

HORACE SLUGHORN: Patrick Stewart (though maybe too tall), Anthony Hopkins

NARCISSA MALFOY: Cate Blanchett, Joely Richardson, Caroline Bliss
  5. What about the casting of Lavender Brown and Bill Weasley? Who would be good choices for them?
  6. ah! shoot. well thanks for the info. is there a picture of her anywhere?
  7. First i think Eileen Walsh is a little too old to be playing Merope because Merope is only supposed to be 18 years old....kinda freaky...

Secoundly for Lavender Brown I think JoJo or Emma Roberts would be a perfect role.

And I do think Angelina Jolie would be a good role for Narcissa Malfoy but shes a little too young. Whatever. There are a lot of young mothers. =)
  8. I would absolutely LOVE to try out for Lavender Brown. I know the Harry Potter series inside out and I've had acting experience! If there is any way I could try out, it would be my dream come true!

Oh, and also, I would be willing to play anyone else [even just an extra]!
  9. I think Emma Roberts should be cast as Lavender. I'd also like to see Keira Knightly in the next movie.. she's a great actress.
  10. The Harry Potter series can simply be described in one word. Awesome. Everything from the books, to the actors/actresses, and of course the movies. If there was ever a chance to star in one, be it major and or just a small part, would be a great honor. Thus far the movies have not let me down on their choices of actors/actresses so I am confident that the remaining movies should be quite illuminating.

  11. i would love to be in harry potter ive been a fan since i was little. even though i`m only 12 i look older i`m 5foot4 it would be so exciting to get in front of a camera with the stars of harry potter they are just amazing
  12. Ian McNeice would be perfect for Slughorn. I just really don't think Anthony Hopkins would fit.

Haha, I wish I could be in the Harry Potter movies! I'd make a great Lavender.
    But, no connections, no chance.
  13. It's too bad that people don't read other's comments before commenting themselves, it would save a lot of wasted space and time.

J.K. Rowling made stipulations that everyone cast in the Harry Potter movies would be British.

Only British kids can be cast as extras. Only British actors can be cast in the movies, period.

If you aren't British, with a British residency, forget about being cast in any of the movies.

And I still say Bill Nighy for Greyback and Hermione Norris for Narcissa.
  14. Narcissa Malfoy should be more fair and light blond she also needs to be sharp and hard looking with an oldish more eligant beauty... even though she pleeds with Snape toi save her son we can't forget that she is not afraid of threatening Harry in Madame Malcons.
Merope should be worn down and a little darker and depressed Amy Winehouse is to bold a character Merope has to blend and be plain but it never says that she is particularly unfortunate looking.
  15. I would lllllooooovvvvveeeee to be in a Harry Potter movie. Any role would be fine. I turn 13 in October but I've been in a school play before and have been in extra in Batman Begins, Ocean's Twelve, and The Weather Man. I am the biggest Harry Potter fan. I read all six books by March of last year. They are amazing. The cast rocks as well. Daniel, Emma, and Rupert are doing a fantastic job! My dream is to become in actor in a harry potter movie.
  16. how did you get to be an extra in those movies?
  17. I really liked Tilda Swinton in The Chronicals of Narnia,With longer blonder hair I think she would make a great Narcissa.
  18. I won't mind playing a character in the Harry Potter movie.I'm smart but timid.Takes time to get used to people being around me.Big fan of Harry Potter.Like Ron Weasley,I eat some of the sweets.
  19. Definitly get Hugh Laurie and by the way out of all the movies the best (which surprised me alot) was in my opinion the 5th one. The acting was spot on and the fight with Voldemort and Dumbledore was awesome!!!! Keep up yall can't wait for the next movie(can't believe I just said that)
  20. I would love to pursue acting some day. Going to see the new movie tonight! Cannot wait. Got two die hard fans going with as well so it should be a good time.
  21. I'm 15 in August, and i'm from Augusta, Maine. I would love to play the part of Lavender Brown. I've always dreamt of being in a movie.
  22. For Merope Graunt, you could consider Emily Blunt. And I like the choice of Anthony Hopkins for Horace Slughorn, although if Jack Nicholson can pull off an English accent, more power to him. Also, it would be brilliant if Hugh Laurie played one of the parts, slthough I don't think he has the lion-like qualities of Rufus Scrimgeour. He should play Marvolo instead. I also agree with the mass of people who have said that Lavendar Brown should be an unknown. The public would be too shocked to see someone famous snuggling up beside Rupert.

  23. I think that Sean Conery whould make a great Rufus! Sushmita Sen could be Narcissa. Ron Perlman would be a great Fenir. Brad Dourif could be a great Marvolo. I can totally see Amy Winehouse as Merope. Horace needs to be more like his description. Anthony Hopkins isn't who I see for him. I was disappointed to see that Umbridge wasn't more frog like, but I still like the actress. Rhys Ifans is ok but to old for Morfin. He's a hard one. Otherwise I loved movie 5 and I love all the Harry Potters and I can't wait for book seven or for the rest of the movies!!
  24. i hate to sound mean or anything but chandi was right, although it brings tears to my eyes, j.k. rowling said she would prefer the cast to be all from the uk unless its fleur or krum or those russian and french extras. o well. i know i have no chance seeing as im 12, american, no acting connections, and everything else bad.
  25. OK, Cate Blanchet would be perfect for Narcissa... I mean, Angelina Jolie, COME ON! How could she fit with the rest of the carachters? Plus, they won't use you if your not from there. Honestly ladies, give it a rest! You're not gonna make out with Ron, lol! I can fake the accent as well as anybody, but it's not happenin' unless they are seriously desperate. So, good luck!
  26. Is it only British people they are casting for the next Harry Potter movie? and if not, how do we go about auditioning, even as extras.
  27. does anyone talk about Lavender Brown? I dont know who would be good I'm American but I fake a good accent I would kill for the part!!! E-mail me if you see audition place please!!!
  28. I WILL SAY IT AGIAN THEY SHOULD USE SEAN CONNERY AS RUFUS SCRIMGEOUR!

    Eric
  29. I'd LOVE to be Lavender Brown but i'm only 13. Hey,anything can happen!
  30. Also, Rupert is extremley hott!!
  31. I would love to have a role in a Harry Potter film! It would be the experience of a lifetime, escpecially for a girl from Louisiana... I know that everyone thinks all people from La have an accent but I don't. I really have a passion for acting and I've been in theatre for years. Just last year I was in Pride and Prejudice, using a British accent and it was so fun! That's too bad that Ms. Rowling only wants UK teenagers... but I bet if she found an American who really impressed her, she might want them cast!
  32. sounds good, every charater you descible is quiet amazing for the actors... every person in the world would want to be in a harry potter film so take your pick and go for it... that's all i have to say...
  33. I'd love to be Lavender Brown. I'm 16 an actress and print model. If the spot isn't filled yet I'd be happy to audition for it.
  34. I think harry is TOTALLY cute!If you see a part for a 10-12 year old tell me!
  35. i would totaly love to see anyone of the actors mentioned here to play the roles, i would absolutly love to be in it too! even if only an extra, being there would be such an awesome experiance
  36. I would love to be cast as anything in a Harry Potter movie! I would to be Lavender but i would still be fine with an extra. I know it will never happen though because i have no connections and im not British. If there are any auditions or anything though i would love to know about them!!
  37. I'm wondering if there are any parts for first through fourth years. obviously there are, but IMPORTANT ones. Hehe.
  38. i think the next movie is going to be great:]
i havent seen the fifth yet its been awful getting tickets! but i think you guys are doing a great job for ideas of casting. acting would be cool but im not from the UK soo oh welll. i do think though that joely richardson would be good!
  39. Me being the part of Lavender Brown would be perfect.I have a british accent so good that people at school call me England.Im actually 12 and turning 13 November 23 but when people look at me they say "Did you fail 2 grades because you look 15."
