After blasting into outer space for his thriller "Sunshine," director Danny Boyle will next venture into the ghettos of India for the curious true-life tale of a game show contestant. Speaking exclusively to MTV News' Kurt Loder, the "Trainspotting" helmer opened up about this little-known project, entitled "Slum Dog Millionaire."
"It's based on a true story about this kid who goes on the Hindi version of 'Who Wants to be A Millionaire,' which is a very tough show to win, and he wins it," Boyle said of the film's plot. "And [because he's illiterate] they think he's cheated. But actually the film shows how he happens to know the answers to the questions that [they] happen to ask."
But there are better things in life than winning game shows and big bucks, Boyle argued. "The real reason he is on the show is that he has lost contact with the girl he loves," Boyle revealed about his main character's motivations. "All he knows is that she watches this show religiously, so he decides to go on the show and try and get [her] back."
Written by "Full Monty" scribe Simon Beaufoy, Boyle is currently shooting "Slum Dog Millionaire" in Mumbai, India.
