Zak Penn Talks Hulk’s Color And ‘Avengers’ Movie Plans

Don’t make “The Incredible Hulk” screenwriter Zak Penn angry…you wouldn’t like him when he’s angry. How can you avoid it? Don’t ask him if his latest incarnation of the classic Marvel superhero will be grey.

“That’s just a mistake, it’s not going to be grey. Of course he’s going to be green,” Penn admonished, responding to rumors circulating about a color change for the iconic mutant. In fact, Penn himself is green with envy over the way the Incredible Hulk was portrayed in the Lou Ferrigno television show, and told MTV that he wants the character to move in the direction of these classic roots. “I always felt about Ferrigno and the makeup was a much more naturalistic version of the Hulk. And that’s what we’re trying to go back to. His skin will appear more real,” Penn divulged. “In the first movie he was so green. He’s not going to be bright green.”

It’s a move towards realism that Penn hopes will permeate the reboot. “It’s not going to have the split screen and all that stuff because it’s more like a real thriller, man on the run, fugitive style movie,” Penn revealed of the flick’s plot. “That’s what I want to see.”

In a few years, the only thing greener than Hulk might be the money the character pulls in. Hulk will most likely also appear in an “Avengers” movie Penn is scripting, the screenwriter confessed.

“‘Avengers’ is definitely going to happen; the idea was always to do a crossover with multiple superheros,” he revealed of the superhero tag team group, Marvel’s answer to DC’s Justice League. “I’m waiting to let ‘Iron Man’ and ‘Hulk’ come out because those are two characters that could appear in it. I used to think that movie would be impossible to make but now I feel like it’s not.”

Is Zak Penn the right guy to pull off “Hulk” and “Avengers?” Tell us in our comments.

I FOR ONE DIDNT CARE A HOOT ABOUT THE COLOR OR THE SIZE I ENJOYED THE SPLIT SCREEN SHOTS WHAT IDIDNT LIKE ABOUT THE HULK WAS THAT PARTS OF THE CGI DIDNT LOOK REAL. BUT MORE THAN THAT HES INCREDIBLE RIGHT? TANK SHELLS BOUNCE OFF HIM BUT THIS WASNT SHOWN HES SUPPOSED TO BE THE STRONGEST THERE IS ON PARE WITH SUPERMAN HE SUPPOSED TO OVERCOME GIANT OPPOSITION IN AN INCREDIBLE WAY SO SHOW HIM DOING THIS, ALSO WILL HE SPEAK?. LETS HERE HIM SAY HULK SMASH, IS IT JUST ABOMINATION WILL ROSS BE GIVEN SPECIAL WEAPONARY TO USE ON THE HULK? WILL HE INDIRECTLY RESCUE PEOPLE? LETS SEE HIM IN ALL IS GLORY AS HE IS 7-8 FT TALL VEINS POPPING RADIATING MONSTER HE IS .

  2. Jason Says:

He’s not. X-Men 3 was one of the worst comic book movies ever made. I don’t understand why they need to be so different from the characters in the actual comics. Look at Sin City. Exactly like the comics. It sucks when these script writers think they need to change so much about the characters. They work in the comics, why can’t they work on screen?

  3. d_haven Says:

Oh..a lot of heated emotions here I see. Personally, I didnt enjoy x3 much, but there were some very good elements to it and I sure as hell plopped down my 8 bucks to go see it..as I see most if not all of you did. Horrible or not, I look forward to seeing the Avengers on the big screen and horrible or not, its not going to change the last 50+ years of Avengers comics. I wish Mr Penn the best of luck with it. I would not want to write a big team movie like that..its sure to be very difficult.

  4. Rich Pitoniak Says:

Zak Penn Simon Kinberg Brett Ratner and Tom Rothman can go to hell they made x-3 into a joke, what happend to the Wolverine/Rogue relationship from 1 and 2 it was dropped in x-3 like it was nothing, what happend to the Wolverine/Rogue/Bobby love triangle that David Hayter stated was in x-2 http://www.comicscontinuum.com/stories/0311/25/xmen.htm it is like Penn and Kinberg just did what they wanted and ignored 1 and 2, i heard from my friend Gina that Paquin Jansen Page Marsden and even Bryan Singer hated x-men 3, now Penn wants to go gor realism with the Hulk then were the ~$*~ was that realism in x-3 cause that film had none Penn is gonna @%?*? this up, even in the interview he said all he really cares about is the money part of it, i hate this Penn guy he sucks ass.

  5. Rex Says:

Zack Penn is a hack with absolutely now talent, which is okay with me because I hate Marvel Superheroes. Penn has written several terrible movies and will destory any movie he writes.

  6. toju Says:

zak ?@*$#% up in ff4 xmen3 and some other films i cant remember though elektra was nice i was shocked when iheard he was writing hulk2 i thought the writer of spiderman1,2,3 will get it or something i really hope he does agood job of my favourite superhero character HULK.As for size make him 7feet and more un-cartoonic AND I JUST WANT TO HEAR HIM SAY HULKSMASH

  7. brandon edwards Says:

I just have to say all of the people that left a comment have very good points on every film they talked about. I personally didn’t like the hulk story line but i was very entertain with seeing the hulk on the screen, as for the second film i wont say anything bad about it untill i see it and decide then. I know people that said the first spider-man movie was going to be stupid before they even saw it, and look what happened that movie was totally awsome. As for the x-men films i thought they were very entertaining, i really want to see the wolverine spin-off movie. Yes there are always things in movies that they could have done better, like in ff4 i really enjoyed it, i just wanted to see the human torch fly a little more then what he did. I am going to see the new ff4 movie because the silver surfer looks bad ass. But i really looked forward to Ironman and the dark knight. But the one movie i am concerned about them making is the avengers movie, so many characters in one movie i mean are they going to have Captain America in it? It seems that marvel has been dicking around with even making a Captain America movie, but i have to give it to Zak Penn to even try to write a story with so many characters, that has to be a very hard task but i wish him the best of luck

  8. iñigo perez Says:

I have nothing against Mr. Penn. I just think the new “old” direction they´re taking with The Hulk is wrong. Looks like they´re trying to appeal to a whole generation that watched tv 30 years ago. I have fondness for the old tv show, but i wouldn´t expect to see a revival. Just get rid of the silly elements, like the gamma dogs or Absorbing Man being Hulk´s dad. Stay true to the comic, to the good parts. Good luck anyway.

  9. Bob Says:

I still say now that Marvel is in FULL control of both Iron Man and Hulk, I think both films will be outstanding.

As for X3, I think it’s a wonderful film. Penn did a good job under tough conditions. The only people that don’t like that film are ~*%% retentive fanboys who can’t differentiate the comic universe from the movie universe and jealous fans from other franchises. Ever since X3 crapped all over Superman Returns in both quality and box office, fans have been bitter. Who cares?

X3 was good, Incredible Hulk will be great.

  10. Cassius Says:

i think that Ang Lee was correct in going the C.G.I. way…because any body who read the comic KNOWS that the Hulk was not 6ft tall he was a “HULKING” creature…i can tell you for a fact that if he is under 10ft tall i will walk out of the movies..because while i liked the tv series i think they f#@& up in terms of the size of the Hulk…..P.S: the tv series’s theme song at the end was the s#!^(any body know wher ei can get it?).

  11. norm Says:

The Hulk is not going to be a body builder. But he’s not going to be a 15 ft King Kong either. He’s going to be a CGI & Animatronics at about 9ft. This was reported by the Director Louis Leterrier. 9ft IMO is to tall. The Hulk shouldn’t be bigger than 7ft. People forget the Hulk is about five guys wide. Its his RAGE not his size!!!!!!!!!!

  12. HMARRS Says:

Oh my goodness I am so sick of this!!!!!
Look the only reason that any comic movie has even the slightest bit of success is becuase of the true elements of the comic.X-men was okay but the only reason it had effect is because of the elements that remained true to the comic.(I wish there had been more)
When you make a movie like this you need your fans
to sell it to a non-fan.For instance I went to see X-men with a person that never read the comic.I gave them a synopsis of the story and I had the person telling that’s not what you said
and then I am in the theater saying…Um that’s wrong and I know I told you this but that’s wrong too.And we both left the theater disapointed and unsatisfied.Example Spiderman Sucessful vs.
Hulk Stunk. They try to play both sides of the fence one side says I have to please the fan vs.I have to please the people who have never heard of the comic and therefore we have to make it realistic as well as comic genre.JUST MAKE A REALISTIC COMIC MOVIE OR A COMIC MOVIE THAT IS REALISTIC.NOT BOTH.iT BECOMES SELF MUTALATION.All they have to do is do a movie as it is in the comic book. The fan has already done the work of preparing the non-comic fan. What about the Punisher possibly the most realistic of all the heroes and they went backwards and made A MOVIE THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN REALISTIC and made it hokey and comic booky. When it should of been somthing like Madd Max.It should have been easy and simple to make. You can tell that they are so afraid of taking chances that they make somthing that will please everyone and in the process please no one.
I am a small time wrighter and I could wright a better script. All of the material is there. It works it has been working for 40-50 years it will work now. Also WHY CAN’T THE HULK TALK!!!!!!!!!!It
is so essential to his persona and character.Even Frankinstein Spoke(who he is looseley based off of as well as Dr.Jekell)Which is why the anst works so well.he is not the Werewolf.GUYS GET IT RIGHT LOOK SHORT AND SIMPLE ..
A LITTLE GEEK OF A MAN CLEAN CUT WITH (GLASSES AND A LAB COAT)GETS CAUGHT IN AN EXPLOSION
Becomes this brute of a beast.Which we see in his speech and size. That destroys everything. His clothes are torn hair is messy
beefed up to the hilt.Contrary to the small non-violent cleancut man he was that’s why it works.that’s why it worked in the t.v. show. Not the size or color that part of the t.v. show was true to the comic that’s why it worked. That’s why it always works the complete contradiction.Who would think this little nerd has the power to destroy half of the world and all though he hates it we wish we had it so we love it.

  13. Lou Johnson Says:

I agree with what Zak is saying about bringing the hulk back to his roots of the actual television show. I mean, I remember being younger and my brothers and I would watch the incredible hulk and we would always wait for his eyes to turn “GREEN” then we knew someone was about to get their head ripped off. But because of the way the plot was set up we knew that whoever he was about to go after basically got what they deserved. He was more like a nomad vigilante a poor person’s champion in the show. And he pulled you into that. That’s why a lot of people online are psyched that Ed Norton is playing him because we all believe he can truly bring that element of the hulk’s heroism back full circle. I for one hope Zak installs the “green eyes” before the hulk changes. I think that would be awesome for my generation of thirtysomething’s who grew up watching the t.v. show.

  14. Tommy Says:

no he is not the right man for the job just look at what he did to xmen the last stand one of the greatest comic book superheroes get rid of this guy he sucks and electra sucked too he needs to go make regular movies and leave the superhero movies to the pros like sam raimi who unfortunatley messed up spiderman part 3 but 2 out of threee is pretty good and guierrmo del toro blade 2 and thats about it .

  15. Beau Says:

Ok, Ang Lee’s version of “The Hulk” is exact from the comics and new cartoons and I enjoyed it. But why have Zak Penn do a “REALISTIC” look for this sequel?

For one reason, he should keep Ang Lee’s comic look to the sequel!

Oh, and Liv Tyler as Betty Ross? Please get real! Re-cast her!!!

  16. TheJoker Says:

Zak Penn talks up a good game, it’s just too bad he can’t seem to ever write even a halfway good script. Instead he pretty much sells his soul and does whatever Arad wants, even when it’s as ill advised and out of character as somethink like Elektra was. So no, he is most definitely *not* the right man for the job. But because he’s such a good little yes man you can bet he’ll get many more marvel movies in future.

  17. DR35150 Says:

If Zak Penn is using the tv show as a basis it will suck. In hindsight the show bored me to tears when it first came out. But it was all we had. We dont need a remake of the show.It was a blasted soap opera. Of course we dont need a 18 foot Hulk like the previous film either with the stupid split screens or Hulk dogs or a stupid villian like Bruce’s father??
So Zak take a hint from X-Men and Spider-Man and see what we want in a superhero film!

  18. David Says:

While I like the casting decision to have Edward Norton play Bruce Banner in the next Hulk film, I am very disapointed that Marvel did not try to keep the continuity of the actors. They could have switched directors and the focus and theme of the second film without losing the continuity.

Now, the Hulk himself is going to look different. That just sucks.

I don’t know what all of the bad reviews of the first film were about — I loved Ang Lee’s vision for the Hulk and would have like to have seen his vision for a 2nd and even 3rd film (trilogy). After the 3rd film, then Marvel could “reinvent” the Hulk with a new director and actors.

One of the criticism about the first film was that it lacked action — that is rediculous! It had tons of action and very good action too.

Liv Tyler as Betty Ross is a poor casting decision — she just does not seem like she can pull off playing an extremely intelligent scientist. She’s a beautiful face — that’s it.

As for the Hulk himself, I certainly hope that they don’t drastically change his appearance. He looked great in the first film. If anything, the technological advances in CGI should only improve his appearance in subsequent films. If they want to add more real physical FX then they could certainly seamlessly blend that in.

I still have an optimistic oultook for the next Hulk film.

    ~ David

  19. David Says:

The Hulk is supposed to be 18 feet tall just like in the comics. Live with it. Making him “more realistic” looking like the TV series is just plain stupid. Come on, he is a giant green monster. How realistic is that concept to begin with? That’s what I always loved about the Hulk — he was just so incredibly Hulkish. He was like nothing else in the Marvel universe. His rage fueled his power, and it was f***king awesome. So, don’t make him become more like the “puny humans”!

  20. Terry Says:

More realistic? How is making him less green more realistic? He is a giant, green gamma ray mutant jekyll and hyde and the thing to bring himn into reality is making him a different shade of green? Well what else do you expect from the genius behind the scripts for Elektra, X-Men 3 and producer of Osmosis Jones. He’s done some good work here but writing the scripts for the VIDEO GAMES for X-Men and Fantastic Four already puts you on shaky ground for comic book adaptations, let alone all the dumb stuff he says in the media.

  21. Mark Fleming Says:

It is a mistake to use the television show as a basis for the next Hulk movie. That series sucked after the first year, and moviegoers don’t need to be cheated by rehashing a tv show. Do I need to list all the lame movies that have been produced recently based on old TV programs?

Having Banner on the run is appropriate, just don’t imitate the tv show. The military should be looking for him, not some dumbass reporter. And there should be a reason to find him, not revenge, but a military reason.

And yes, the Hulk should be big and green and mean. When Hulk smash, his destruction should be devastating, people should die.

And if the movie isn’t two hours long, you won’t be getting my money. I hate movies that will fill a two hour slot with commercials on tv. Don’t cheat us with tv quality movies!!

  22. Jay Says:

While everyone is entitled to their opinion I think you are all splitting hairs on these films. I prayed for years that these movies be made but am glad they waited until the technology evolved to do them the right way.
    1. On the X-Men costumes.. sure Halle Berry would have been smoking in Storm’s original costume but Wolverine and Colossus would have looked ridiculous. The leather was fine people.. get over it.
    2. X-Men 3 kicked butt.. nuff said
    3. Anyone who bitches about Ghost Rider is just hating. That film blew Spidey 3 out of the water. The effects were stunning and Nic Cage’s portrayal had more depth than any other Marvel alter ego to date - and, yes, that includes Wolverine kiddies. Eva Mendes was totally EZ on the eyes as well.
    4. Casting - Halle Berry, Jessica Alba, Eva Mendes, Jennifer Garner… what more could you ask for in leading ladies. Ok, ok.. maybe an attractive MJ Watson. And I will never get over Eric Foreman portraying Venom.. who’s bright idea was that?
    5. Finally… exactly what would any of you have done differently? I hear a lot of complaining but no solutions. These films are made to make $$ and that means they MUST appeal to the general public as well as the fans. I have yet to see any real serious compromise of the original Marvel spirit in any of them.
Can’t wait to see the Silver Surfer on the big screen… I have been screaming for them to make the FF trilogy for years! Enjoy people… that is why they make movies in the first place

  23. Blackwell Says:

Ok, please, everybody who said they enjoy the old hulk tv show, please tell me when was the last time you saw it???if you remember it as a vague souvenir when you we’re 10, then it’s the wrong answer. the show suck back then…still suck now…I mean, the guy had trouble moving a car…i know you’ll say…well the special effect back then wasn’t as good as today..but, if you can’t do a good movie or tv show from a comic book heroes, then don’t. if you change too much of it in your version, then call it another name or better yet, create your own hero and do a movie…but don’t use an existing hero and change everything on it…if so, you just don’t understand existing heroes…what they are all about!!!
I remember an old comic book of spiderman where a couple of guys wanted spiderman to be in there movie, and spiderman said: no way man, i know you guys you will change everything on my costume, even put my web shooter in my nose…!it was funny….but, today, Zak (and other guys) is doing the same thing! changing everything because he liked the a show in the 70’s!he don’t like the comic book, he liked a show he saw 20 years ago…and i remember it when i was
    a kid…i was 10 or 11 and i wasn’t a big critic…but didn’t like it..to me he wasn’t hulk at all!!!
    and like i said before….good luck anyway…but please, don’t f**k my heroes you guys….

  24. CHenry Says:

Ok…time for everyone to breathe a bit, re-read what Penn said, and actually THINK before ranting out in a rage. He said he wanted his movie to move in the direction of those “classic roots,” as in the Hulk/Banner on the run with a little more character development on the Banner side. Nobody ever said he was going to be on the run from a reporter…you people are reading that into what Penn said. Most people against the “TV basis” idea are invoking the Ang Lee movie as the ideal direction the movie should go. Did you people actually watch that movie? You did? Then why is it you missed the part of the movie (as in most of the movie) where the Hulk was ON THE RUN from the government? Ok…yes the TV show was at various times on the cheesy side…that’s a product of 70s television. Get over that. Penn never said he was going to try to make a movie out of the TV show. Anyone who watched the show, and was OVER the age of 10 at the time, knows that the show was good because it had a very good, tormented character development of Banner. It seems to me that everyone that’s complaining are doing so because Penn didn’t say “hey, I’m taking your favorite storyline and making it into a movie.” As for the different shade of green, o my gawd…you people really do feel the need to complain about something don’t you. You’re comparing it to the Xmen movies. Guess what? Storm’s hair was different in each one. Wolverine’s costume changed. Cyclops’ costume and visors changed. Jean changed. Rogue changed. Change happens. And how many times has the Hulk changed in the comics? Anyone care to count? Anyone?

  25. JB.K. Says:

I only scanned through some of the comments, but here we go… I’ve liked all of the comic book movies so far…that is Spiderman onwards… So, I did in fact like Electra and such. None of the movies that have come out have been much of anything like the comics they’re based off of…except for Ghost Rider. Personally…I think that Nicholas Cage sucks…I think his acting sucks…and yet…him in Ghost Rider was AWESOME! Ghost Rider was the best comic book movie ever! As for this last Hulk…it was good for what it was, but it could use changes. I’d say the best interpretation of the Hulk comic was not the ’70s T.V. version, or this last movie, but instead the cartoon that came out on UPN in the late ’90s. The ’70s version got the “haunted man on a run” aspect of the comic. Ang Lee understood the psychological side of it…but he over did that though. The Hulk is Bruce’s suppressed anger…yes…but it’s also his deep seated hate of his fellow man. Subconsciously he hates his fellow for being inferior to him intellectually, but in the Hulk, it’s expressed instead through hate for everyone being weaker than him. The Hulk is an angry 2 year old…annoyed by all these insects constantly stalking him, never leaving him alone for second. As Bruce, he does try to suppress the Hulk…but not the Olympic length of time that he did in the movie. If they could get the writers from The Incredible Hulk animated series from the ’90s…that would be an awesome movie. As for his coloring…I’m not sure how to fix that…but he was a bit doughy…though Lou Ferrigno was corny. Need somewhere between the two…and yet completely different. I guess that is all I have to say…

  26. Rob P Says:

I liked the original Hulk. I thougth the Story was well done, they did a EXCELLENT Job of showing the rage and the power of Hulk. Granted he was 2 big, He’s suppose to be human size but wide. 6 ‘6-7′0. Other then that the original movie was right. He’s SUPPOSE to be bright Green. Of course it isn’t going to look Realistic but lets be real. Hes capable of breaking mountains with his fist, how realistic is that.

  27. Rick Cardona Says:

How about a Hulk that is the One never done, the comic book Hulk. One that talks, one that doesn’t grow to 15 feet tall ever time he gets angrier, and one that doesn’t like he’s wearing a really bad wig. One that can throw a tank a mile and repell bullets and jump a mile. I pray he doesn’t just remake the TV show.

  28. john Says:

1st of all in the comics the hulk is depicted by all of the illustrators that worked on the franchise to stand at least 12ft tall, myself and it seems obvious many fans have or had no problem wit lee’s visual interpetation of the hulk’s size or color he’s suppost 2b ~?#$#~ green, what’s wit dis realistic shade of green ~~#~, its not suppost 2b realistic its afuckin comic book and init the hulk was extremely big mad and green, if there was a prob it was wit lee’s action part of the story their could have been lots more visuals and action not that their was anything wrong wit the action inda 1st i think every1 just expected alot more c.g.i visually stunning carnage, destruction like hulk just totally raging out in a big city type setting please marvel! listen 2da fans and comic geeks like my self our opinion’s count

  29. Richard Samms Says:

I’m sure Zak will do a GREAT job of incorporating the Hulk and The Avengers into one great movie. At last the technologly is available to create a movie with a multiple of super characters, as we’ve already seen in The X-Men & The Fantastic Four. The challenge is to use the CGI technology correctly to best show off the powers of Iron Man, Thor (with hammer not axe and acting like a real GOD and not a beer loving Scandinavian) The Vision (massive potential to do well with this character), The Scarlet Witch, Wasp, Giant Man, Captain America, The Beast, Wonderman and The Black Panther etc.

Ultron could be the main villian of this movie or Galactus ( if he is under used as I feel he will be in The Rise Of The Silver) Surfer or even Doctor Doom.

Its a huge task and it will be exciting to see the final visual outcome with a captivating story line.

  30. UnReal Says:

I find that u have 2 sides regarding the Hulk movie. The people familiar with the tv show and the people who grew up on the comic. For all intents and purposes he was pretty much physically portrayed correctly in the movie but the people who watched the show didnt know that. And then for the comic book fans the story sucked because there was a total lack of what we as the readers are familiar with. I maen where the hell was Rick Jones for starters. Anyway Im lookin forward to Hulk 2, Ed Norton is def a good fit and I’d like to see how they’re going to portray the Hulk. Rather than CGI maybe they could do the Hulk how Mr Hyde was portrayed in League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen. I think visually that would satisfy both crowds.

  31. Chris Currie Says:

    I’m a Gray Hulk fan.

Whenever the “Incredible Hulk” film comes out on DVD, one of the extras should be a feature that allows you to make the Hulk’s color gray instead of green; that way, Gray Hulk fans can enjoy their favorite version of the Hulk.

  32. hopeless Says:

Is Penn the right person to pull this off?… His track record tells me no. X3 was moronic, it only made money because it provided mindless action. Mindless action does not equal a good script. It doesn’t take talent to write down “Boom” on a page.

  33. Jarom Says:

I hope he can pull this off. One thing I have noticed is that no matter how much the fans protest against hollywood changing there charactors they still change them anyway. people go to the movies even if they are not fans so it still looks like everyone loves the movie. I was pissed when I saw what they did to Juggernaut in X3. Writer need to remember that the fans hate it when you totally change a charactor. Juggernaut was not a mutant so he should have not been affected by the other mutants power like he was. The easiest fix would have been to let him fall go thru the wall and out the back of the building. The kid had a room with at least one exterior wall because he had a window. Juggernaut falls out the window and they get away. That way they show that Juggernaut is not a mutant, X-men fans are happy, those that don’t know and are curious as to why he is not a mutant do research, those that don’t care, don’t care. Everyone is good. By making him a mutant they made him a different charactor wit someone elses name. Same with Hulk, stay true to the charactor Zak! those of us that care will love you. Those that don’t know Hulk can either learn more about him or just leave it as is. Don’t $%~?? this up. Ang Lee ruined the movie but he got Hulk mostly right, other thatn making him 15 feet tall! He got his speed right, he got his anger right, he got his color close to right. Don’t loose that. Remember that Hulk is one of if not the most powerful charactor in Marvel universe. Zak becareful not to comfuse use that KNOW and follow Hulk for those that just want to watch a movie. They will still pay for tickets but they don’t know or care what you write. If you are going to Change the Hulk at least show him enough respect to change the name of the movie to Big Green Super Strong Guy, cause it won’t BE the INCREDIBLE HULK!

  34. HMARRS Says:

Stick to the comic!!!!!History has proven time and time again it works!!!
    Batman Begins-Worked
    Batman and Robin-Not Worked
    Superman-Worked
    Superman Returns-Not Worked
    Sin City-Worked
    Daredevil-Semi-Worked because of Changes
Costumes and Characters(Kingpin,Bullseye) and such let’s not forget comics are visual.
    Punisher-Semi-worked(It was a little Hokey)
    Popeye-Never did Broadway enough said.
    Ghostrider-Worked
    Spiderman-Worked
    X-men-Worked
Fantastic Four-Worked(Although I don’t know why the Thing couldn’t have been CGI with Micheal Caulkins Voice)
And beieve it or not as succesful as some of these movies have been there was room for more sucess if it were not for minor inconsistancies).
Zak don’t do it don’t try to please the non-fans they won’t notice the differance to something they don’t know about and your die hard T.V.
fans… they have already accepted the change in the first movie.Don’t appear inconsistent they won’t respect you.If you are going in the direction of the story cool. But please don’t take it anywhere else.Count on your fans they will sell the movie for you.Provided it is done right if not they will destroy you and the movie. How by telling everyone how wrong it was.Example opening weekend for the Hulk it was number one by the second week it dropped to number ten I think.
Remeber you don’t go to a restarant telling your freinds how good the steak is in that place and get served a Beef patty sandwich because then you both leave disapointed.no matter how good it was it was not what you came for.So read Hulk #1 and work your way up.
    Good Luck!!!!

  35. Actionguy Says:

Okay, so they didn’t have the budgets to do “The Incredible Hulk” comics for TV in the 70’s, they did however, give us great character developement for a man tormented by something horrible that he had limited control over. Penn is taking that type of Bruce Banner and taking “The Incredible Hulk” back to it’s comic book roots!
This is what I’ve always wanted to see in a Hulk film, and what fascinated me about the character in the first place: The science fiction elements of the stories like the 60’s Stan Lee/Jack “King” Kirby Hulk and Fantastic Four comics!
    Let’s just wait and see!

Going back to the ‘old’ Hulk? C’mon, first of all, the comic book was around way before Lou was painted green. Secondly, and like spider-man, the movie is primarily for the young, not the older crowd that misses some painted-beefcake. The point of making a movie about a comic-book character is to introduce the character to a new generation. In the comic book, the Hulk could jump three miles, was retardedly huge and lifted friggin’ mountains. That’ll look splendid (and gay) when done by a Hulk that’s the size of someone you can see at any gym. This dude needs to un-plug his head from his ass and introduce the the green man back they way he should be brought.

  37. Scott Says:

…and for everyone saying that the hulk is ‘human size’, what the f$%k comics did you read?

  38. kestonw Says:

I don’t know much about Zak Penn…all i know i didn’t like his movies much!especially X3…(the juggernaut and the last magneto battle scenes were very dissapointing for a “movie-goer”…so u can imagine how a fan like myself felt!)but let’s give him a chance to prove that he doesn’t kill everything he touches!there is one major factor that could ensure overall success of the movie(meaning a blockbuster, and fan and movie junky favorite)…Marvel studios!i believe they took control because of the dissapointing entry of Hulk into the movie world!Hulk supposed to be a franchise movie like Spiderman…but after the first flop nobody saw that happening.Hulk after all is the second or third most recognizable Marvel charcter after Spiderman.a good movie about one of Marvel’s most powerfull heroes is deserved(no “PG” rated crap…a “PG” rated Hulk is not the angry, violent and destructive hulk we know and love.that’ll be a green Bruce Banner ready to sip tea.)i’m sick of comic movies being toned down to faciltate children to make a little more money.don’t ruin a potential franchise for short-term profit.stick to the story…make a movie to the comic storyline and you’ll make all the money u need.i guarantee it!all i have to say is…Marvel, you’re the “Boss” now…don’t let directors, producers and hollywood riff raff change the storyline u made and we’ve grown to love!

  39. Jason Says:

Okay, so Zak’s writing the “Incredible Hulk” revamp. There’s no changing that now. Hopefully he can give us an authentic adaptation of the comic book character…but it sounds like he’s more interested in the T.V. version…completely different than the comics. Hulk is massive. He’s not human size. He can hurl tanks through the air like baseballs, he can jump in lengths of miles. He’s probably one of the most powerful characters in Marvel’s arsenal. So how in the hell do you make him “real?” He’s a friggin comic book character. Please don’t make the first movie Marvel’s actually producing suck like “X-Men: The Last Stand.” Unless it was completely altered, you (Zak) told every true X-Men fan to F themselves with that movie. It was an insult. Changing what side characters were on (Multiple Man), genders (Marrow), powers (Callisto) backgrounds (Juggernaut) and characters all together. It’s just not necessary. Please don’t destroy another one of Marvel’s biggest and best characters out there. Hulk deserves much better, and it would really suck if this movie turned out to be worse than Ang Lee’s version (which I don’t think was really that bad in the first place).

  40. Alex F Says:

Well, at least the Hulk won’t be grey. And as for a “human sized” Hulk, that had best be his “starting point”. Yeah, Hulk does get huge (like 9-12 feet tall, but that’s it) but any bigger just will look rediculous (and yes, i don’t know how to spell that word). But an emo-Hulk will just make fans of the comic go “Eww…”. Now, as for Avengers, let’s see some old school Avengers: no Spider-man, no X-Men like in the 2004 to present series(es)!

  41. Mike Says:

I think he can pull it off. You have to have writers and production teams passionate about bringing these characters to life not just for the sake of profit. The believability of a man turning into a tortured beast made the hulk show work in the 70’s and that same inner conflict can make the new movie work today. Cant wait to see the result.

  42. kestonw Says:

i agree with some of your points…but Jessica Alba great acting(i’m assuming you’re talking about FF4)?simply put….no!!!she’s kinda like the Anna Kournikova of hollywood…she’s an actress, but most people don’t go to see her acting!they go to see her smoking hott body(and i must repeat…SMOKING HOTT!!)!she’s in the top ten(even five) as far as beautiful actresses go….but not acting!i’m not hating on the sexy lady…she just hasn’t had that role to establish herself as a great one(actress) just yet!now for my point.
I agree with the loner Bruce Banner(aka Bruce “The Bum” Banner) on the run from the law(doesn’t really have a place of constant residence, becuz he’s on the run!)…kinda like “Rambo”(movie goers always have sympathy on characters like that).keeping to himself and always on the move…but when provoked…you’ll see his “hidden talents”:)i love the muscle density tip!!!the angrier Hulk gets the more defined his muscles become!that growing when he gets angry (as in the previous Hulk)is flawed to me.Hulk is known to have no limits to his anger…so in that case,i’m speculating that there’s no limit to his growth either:|…”Bullsh*t”!the last Hulk to me molstly looked like a guy who put on size to body-build but never started training!c’mon the Hulk supposed to be ripped, and muscle bound!i’m just saying!as for the movie itself…i think it would be best to portray the good and bad of have the Hulk on this earth…bad being destructive and uncontrollable (like a wild animal) when loose(it won’t hurt to see a little drool from the big guy from time to time…just to show how savage he is).i also wish (for added emotion to the movie) they show Hulk causing tragedy to innocent bystanders(cause that’s what hulk does) whether intentional or not!this shows moviegoers who are unfamiliar with the hulk, that he’s not your typical hero and is sometimes a threat to the people who think highly of him(we fans know he Banner doesn’t mean to hurt ppl…he just can’t control the Hulk).good being altough he’s threat to society,he(Hulk) is the only one who can stand up to Abominition(who unlike the Hulk actually has evil intentions and intends to hurt people to get what he wants).
This movie…if continued from the first Hulk may have been poor!!!Just remember Zak (Penn)…This is a clean slate…a fresh start!!!it isn’t “Hulk2″….it’s “The Incredible Hulk”.you can countinue having with fan-boys of the Hulk down your throat…or u can actually do some research, don’t change the character too much from the comics(becuz as Moseley stated, and i agree with to a point…not all changes are bad!),and be remembered as the director of a Blockbuster franchise…such as how we hold Brian Singer and Sam Raimi!
    {one piece of advice…”please the fans”…some fans buy the same comics five times over for no reason…so why won’t they watch a movie five times over if it’s good?think about it!!!}

  43. HMARRS Says:

Stick to the comic Zak it’s the source.Use the the sorce Zak use the sorce!!!!!

  44. Dan Says:

What?!? He’s talking about bringing the Ferrigno looking Hulk back. How can you justify that? I don’t want realism. I want the Hulk to look like the Hulk. READ THE BLEEPIN’ COMIC! THAT’S ALL YOU HAVE TO DO! APPEAL TO THE PEOPLE WHO READ THE COMICS and the rest of the world movie audience will follow. If the Hulk looks Ferrigno-like I will start a boycott site.

  45. denny Says:

What’s with all you goofballs whining about how you don’t want them to change the character? First, a live action movie is not a comic book. What works for a comic doesn’t necessarily work for a movie. Second, NONE of the movies have jerked around with the characters near as much as the comics have themselves!

Take the hulk for instance. When the comic first started, Bruce Banner turned into the Hulk every night, like a werewolf. He was gray and he spoke in complete sentences. Then Banner would turn himself into the Hulk on purpose by bathing in gamma rays; he was green and still spoke in complete sentences. Then he was the Hulk all the time, and somewhere along the way lost most of his speech ability (”Hulk smash!”). Then he was Banner most of the time and became the Hulk only when he got angry (usually once or twice per comic). Then he was the Hulk all the time again, unless he got too close to gamma rays which would temporarily turn him into Banner.

All of these character changes were in the FIRST SIX YEARS of the comic book.

In later years the writers seemingly never got tired of jumping that poor old shark. They brought in She-Hulk. They brought back the Gray Hulk. They made up all kinds of little backstories and personal histories that directly conflicted with things that had been published before. In short, they’ve changed the character about as often as Bruce Banner has had to change his purple pants.

All I want to see is a good movie. If he’s big and green and smashes things and looks arguably alive (the first one didn’t!) I’ll be happy. If Ed Norton can pull off the tormented intellectual as opposed to Eric Bana’s whiny lunkhead, I’ll be ecstatic. It would be nice if they got some of the stuff from the comic books right (it was a gamma bomb, not a stinkin genetics experiment!). But you know what? I thought Bixby and Ferrigno did just fine.

  46. DoomMonkey Says:

Stick to the source. Always the source. Adapt it, tweak it, but don’t try to tell me that a comic-book character isn’t real enough. He’s a comic-book character. The people who will spend all their money on tickets for this movie are the people who have lived and dreamed it for years. They are the nerds that buy your Porsche’ Mr. Penn. And you are a fool for thinking yourself better than them.
I love, LOVE, practical effects. CGI is always going to have that quality that pricks the back of your mind with a big anti-illusory needle. But, CG is the necassary route for certain characters… like the Hulk. Ferrigno was fun, but that was then. I need my hulk to be an eight-foot 1200 lb. ball of muscle. Or more. There.

  47. anonymous Says:

i loved the Hulk movie but X3 was $$%* i don’t Zack is the right choice and that this movie will be $$%*

  48. stephen from hawaii Says:
