Orlando Bloom Iffy On ‘Hobbit’ Role Unless Peter Jackson Returns

Orlando Bloom seems to be shying away from playing the great elf Legolas in “The Hobbit,” that is unless his original “Lord of the Rings” helmer is behind the camera. “Who’s directing it, Peter Jackson?” he mockingly answered when asked about the possibility.

Yes, we know that Legolas isn’t technically in “The Hobbit,” and to his eternal credit, Bloom knows this as well. But dedicated “Rings” fans know that Legolas is an elf from the realm of Mirkwood, a kingdom Bilbo Baggins and his dwarf companions get captured in towards the end of “The Hobbit,” imprisoned there by the Elvenking Thranduil.

Given, then, that Bilbo spends much time during “The Hobbit” at Mirkwood, and given, too, that Thranduil is Legolas’s father — it seems inconceivable that filmmakers wouldn’t choose to include the popular character in some capacity. “Maybe they’ll create a subplot for Legolas,” Bloom said, though later adding that “I think we covered [his story] with ‘Lord of the Rings.’”

Would Legolas in “The Hobbit” be a good idea, with or without Peter Jackson? Sound off below.

Jackson should do the film, but Legolas isn’t in the book… I like the suggestion of Bloom playing Thranduil, however. It would flex acting muscles he may not have, though, to play a different but similar character. Hotness doesn’t equal acting ability!

  2. Todd Says:

Maybe a cameo of Legolas in a non speaking role just kind of there while the dwarfs are imprisoned by the elves. and a small cameo for Liv Tyler because she is Elrond’s daughter and could be in his house when the dwarfs arrive but like Legolas a non speaking role just a cameo and no Aragorn or any of the other unneccasary characters the only ones needed are Ian McKellan as Gandalf, Hugo Weaving as Elrond, Andy Sirkus as Gollum, and Possibly Ian Holme as Bilbo if he would do it. ( he did say the make up to make him look younger was uncomfortable and hurt. If the others not in the story want role put them in role of people in lake town or something to create roles for characters not in the book for sake of a family reunion of sorts would be awfull. or put the characters from LOTR in this movie they are talking about that would take place between the Hobbit and FOTR to bridge to span of time. This is just MY opinion but the one thing I think is fact is that Peter Jackson has to direct it or it won’t be worth the film its printed on.

  3. Chaelin Says:

Has anyone out there read “the Hobbit?”. Tho there is no part for our beloved Legolas artest lisens is aloud….. BUt are we forgetting Gandolf and his importance? Along with Ian Holms as THE HOBBIT. He is Bilbo. Read people and stay faithful.

  4. Trish Says:

It just would’nt be the same without PJ directing. We are all waiting so anxiously, prreciousss. Orlando Bloom? Yes, he was alive during the Hobbit and even though he wasnt in the book it would be fantastic if he were in the film. After all, isnt that what he did successfully with LOTR? The small added in bits (as long as they are potrayed as Tolkien has them in his world) are welcome as our imaginations often trail off more on the whole story anyway. We simply can’t get enough of Middle Earth. Bowie as Thranduil? Yeah, that’s good as well.

  5. Eruannon Says:

I think that jason isaacs should be thranduil. i mean, look at him in “chamber of secrets”! he’s perfect! very haughty, the right face… PERFECT!

  6. Dani Stanley Says:

YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES PUT LEGOLAS IN THE HOBBIT AND PJ BETTER DIRECT IT HE IS THE BEST DIRECTOR EVER!!! OJBB RULEZ!!!!!!

  7. legolaslover Says:

    I absolutly love my Legolas!!!!!!!
And i would love to see him act again, but the truth of the matter is that Legolas’s part in the Lord of the Rings is over.
He did his part by coming out in the triology [which was well done]
And now it is time to move on.
I think they’re pushing it too much.
And if not filmed by the same director.
Then i beleive it might be a disaster.

  8. Mrs_Orlando_Bloom Says:

I would love to see Orlando make at least a cameo in “The Hobbit” and if he doesn’t, then I will not be very pleased at all. There will be a lot of questions asked if Orli doesn’t appear in the films and I will be one of those asking them.

  9. Jan Says:

Good call to Eruannon’s replay, have Jason Isaacs play Legalos’ father and a cameo for Legalos aka Orlando Bloom would be significant like Burt Lancaster (please don’t say who’s that?) in Kevin Costner’s “Field of Dreams” movie. There must be some type of tie in from references in the book or a creative interpretation. I vote for “if it ain’t broke why fix it” method and have Mr. Peter Jackson direct once again, he’s a winner!

  10. tina Says:

i don’t care what people say orlando is hot no matter what.

  11. old man Says:

Whether he’s in it or not doesn’t really matter. Who in God’s green earth are they going to get to fill, what, 12 dwarf roles, and Beorn? Bard the Bowman? Who will voice Smaug? I’d say by now, Ian Holm is too old to play Bilbo, Elijah Wood is too Frodo, and who else is there? If you can forget he played Sam, Sean Astin would make a good Bilbo, if.. So what was the question again? Oh yeah, like that matters.

  12. Movie Says:

    Orlando Bloom is good actor

  13. Ricky Says:

I think that as long as PJ is the producer, that he will have a hand guiding whomever directs. And surely all of the scenery will mesh. It was all saved from LOTR for the Hobbit movie. It would just be more economical for Newline to use sfx workers who are already familier with the world they are going to create. And of course, whatever characters are in both movies, I hope the LOTR actors come back. I even hope for a cameo of Merry and Pippin.

  14. Lady Taz Says:

    OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    That would rock!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(For the record, NO WAY could Orlando play Thransduil- why shouldn’t he play OUR FAVORITE ELF Legolas Greenleaf?????????)

PS:I’m just hoping they stick true to the book!!!!

PSS: It would also be cool if Liv could come back as Arwen- our other favorite elf!!!!!!!!!!

Also: Ian Mckellen needs to play Gandalf- no question about it!!!

Plus Plus: In the bridge movie, it’d be awesome to show Aragorn, cause he was born a while back!!!

  15. katie Says:

    hi poo poo had

  16. Varda Says:

Legolas, Aragorn, and Gimli were not in the Hobbit book because they had not yet been imagined. If JRRT had known of them, they most likely would have been included at least as foreshadowing, such as Bilbo’s meeting 10-year old Aragorn at Rivendell. Legolas was of age to be one of the captains of Thranduil, and would have likely been present at the forest feasts.

  17. Haley Says:

I definatly think that Peter Jackson should defiantly be behind the camera and Orlando should definatly be in the movie as Legolas

  18. Jade Says:

Okay,I agree that Peter Jackson should be directing it. There can be no better director. But if they put a spot for Legolas, and Orli does not play it,I will be really upset, and probably will not watch it. It would ruin the whole thing! So, if he isn’t going to act in it, don’t make a spot for him, because someone else will play it, and it will ruin the WHOLE thing.

  19. Cyclone gurl Says:

I think itll better wit him in it dint know its up to yall

  20. teL Says:

Legolas was not in the book primarily because the story does not require him to be present. tolkien couldn’t possibly go out of the way as to say..”and there stood legolas, son of thranduil etc” if it doesn’t have a relevant contribution to the plot.

but a movie is different. its a visual merchandise. legolas could be really standing there behind thranduil while the latter talks about the ‘more important things’.

a cameo is appropriate. besides, its legolas’ home. its impossible for him not to be involved in his father’s affairs, too…unless thranduil sent him to some errand or something..XD

  21. Kelsey Says:

I really want Legolas to be in the Hobbit, and I want Orlando to play him again. It just makes sense, Bilbo, goes in to Legoles’s Kingdom of Mirkwood. Just because Legolas was not in the book dosent mean he can’t in the Movie. I Love Legolas!!!!!!!!

  22. Will I Am Says:

I just noticed that if PJ isn’t directing the movie, none of the original charecters in The Lord of the Rings trilogy will be in it.SO PLEASE DIRECT THE HOBBIT,JACKSON OR ILL SUE YOU FOR HURTING PEOPLE’S FEELINGS.Sorry I was expressing my inner feelings.Plus I wasnt gonna sue you.I dont think Orlando should play the part of Thranduil. He should continue the part of Legolas.Maybe the remaining orcs that ran away in the end didn’t die but made another orc breeding ground somewhere in a abandon Dwarven Mine or something and chose a strong orc as their new leader.like when Lurtz was born from the pod in isengard and he killed the working orc,Saruman saw and he chose him to leader the Uruk-Hai.Anyway,I say Peter Jackson MUST be the director or I,well, I speak for evryone who wants him to be,we the people will NEVER I say NEVER watch The Lord of the Rings “The Hobbit” if Peter Jackson aint gon’ direct this movie Kay.

  23. Link Says:

Well you have to understand one quick thing. P.J must do it! He created the Middle Earth we all know and cherish! As for Legolas being in it, YES! But not disturbing the concept of the story! But as Thranduil I would agree! I mean Orlando turned into a MEGA STAR and “Target” for ALL females of THE WORLD!(Even though I fell in love with him in POTC! ^-^) But WHO DOESN’T LOVE THE BLOND WIG!! As for the rest of the Fellowship I’m not sure. Aragon is cool BUT the story is 60 years before which in LOTR he says he is 87 in so he would be 27 in The Hobbit. Unless they get a younger actor to play him. But Legolas should be in it! IT IS MIRKWOOD AFTER ALL! His hometown!
