Orlando Bloom Iffy On ‘Hobbit’ Role Unless Peter Jackson Returns

Orlando Bloom seems to be shying away from playing the great elf Legolas in “The Hobbit,” that is unless his original “Lord of the Rings” helmer is behind the camera. “Who’s directing it, Peter Jackson?” he mockingly answered when asked about the possibility.

Yes, we know that Legolas isn’t technically in “The Hobbit,” and to his eternal credit, Bloom knows this as well. But dedicated “Rings” fans know that Legolas is an elf from the realm of Mirkwood, a kingdom Bilbo Baggins and his dwarf companions get captured in towards the end of “The Hobbit,” imprisoned there by the Elvenking Thranduil.

Given, then, that Bilbo spends much time during “The Hobbit” at Mirkwood, and given, too, that Thranduil is Legolas’s father — it seems inconceivable that filmmakers wouldn’t choose to include the popular character in some capacity. “Maybe they’ll create a subplot for Legolas,” Bloom said, though later adding that “I think we covered [his story] with ‘Lord of the Rings.’”

Would Legolas in “The Hobbit” be a good idea, with or without Peter Jackson? Sound off below.

  1. As long as it wouldn't disrupt the canon of Tolkein's original work, I would LOVE to see Legolas appear in The Hobbit! Or better yet, why not let Orli play Thranduil? That might get his actor chops to watering...
  2. The Elves of Mirkwood are in the forest, at Legolas' house, and show up near the end at the
Battle of Five Armies, so of course he would have to show up somewhere!!! Drunken party elves when Bilbo escapes would be a great place. What about Sting for Thranduil ????
  3. Peter Jackson is the only logical choice for director of The Hobbit. He created a Middle-earth we all love and believe in. We went there in the Lord of the Rings film trilogy. Now we want to go back again.
  4. Of course Legolas should be featured in the Hobbit - but the movie MUST be made by PJ. And Terry O'Quinn should be cast as Thranduil. He doesn't even need fake ears to play the part, and has the right attitude.
  5. Yes, Legolas SHOULD be in as at least a cameo; Tolkien actually created Gimli (son of Gloin) and Legolas (son of Thranduil) as a link between "The Hobbit" and its "sequel" "The Lord of the Rings"; Gloin and Thranduil were Hobbit characters and he needed to have a continuation.

Legolas shouldn't get a subplot or anything, it's just that when a "random elf" says something it should be Legolas instead, i.e. when the dwarves get captured by a hunting party it could be led by Legolas.

    Whatever.

***I am adamant that NONE of the actors from the trilogy should work on "The Hobbit" without Peter Jackson.

This news that Orlando is unwilling to make a cameo in a non-Jackson Hobbit is great; it puts more pressure on New Line to work with Jackson and reconcile with him.

***Ian McKellen (Gandalf the Gray) and Andy Serkis (Gollum) the two other major characters who actually DO reappear in the story, have said they are unwilling to return without Jackson at the helm.

I doubt Hugo Weaving will come back as Elrond either.

Also, the other actors said they would be willing to make little cameos, i.e. Elijah Wood as his father Drogo Baggins and Sean Astin as Hamfast "Gaffer" Gamgee could appear at the end during the "auction" scene; but Wood and Astin have made clear that they're iffy on making cameos without Jackson.

***Good eye, MTV; of course you probably looked up the explanation of "how and why Legolas should be retconned into a Hobbit movie even though he wasn't directly in the book" from the wikipedia article on Legolas that we Ringers ourselves wrote (doesn't really matter :) )

Yes: one more challenge to New Line which might make them change their minds.
  6. Mr. Jackson has absolutely earned the right to direct. But if he can't or won't (depending on the situation with New Line and the law suit), I would love to see Guillermo del Toro get the job. Legolas should appear (even if only in a cameo). Sam Neill should play Thranduil. And Ben Kingsley should play Thorin!
  7. Hmmmm on the one hand, letting Orli play Thranduil would be an uprade to his character....but then his son Legolas should look the same because he's immortal.

***You see the problem is that even J.R.R. Tolkien himself openly admitted that "Legolas" is the member of the Fellowship that does the least; he's a minor character. Well not "minor", but Tolkien himself said "he's kind of the "token Elf"".

Remember how Leggy didn't really do TOO much in FOTR? THey didn't realize he'd be this breakout success, so they started giving him more to do in the later movies because he was popular. ****Aragorn's "great friend" in LOTR is Eomer of the Rohirrim, not Legolas. Eomer's screentime was hurt alot.

Bloom is a GREAT actor though, as the writers admit; they'd often give him impossibly bad scripts and he'd turn it into something great. I mean he puts so much thought into simple things like "this is what Legolas's reaction should be to getting a new Galathrim bow" and "the concept of a mortal death should be an alien concept to Legolas, so when Boromir dies I react with complete confusion" etc. etc. He put a lot of thought and heart into that role.

****So Legolas got turned into this action-centric character; the heart of his role was really when he stops being enemies with Gimli.

Legolas never had a girlfriend; no comment.

*****Oh this would be fun; in the extended edition of Return of the King Legolas wins this drinking contest with Gimli at Edoras.

***in "The Hobbit", Bilbo is able to free the Dwarves from the Elf prison because the head guard and another elf get into their own drinking contest, but with super-wine from Dorwinion which is "strong sheet" even for Elves (You're supposed to drink it out of a shotglass, but they only had doublepint flagons lying around...) and they pass out drunk. That might be fun for him to do.

***Just remember: Legolas is not a Wood Elf. He's a Gray Elf. A Gray Elf that basically "went native" and started acting like a Wood Elf running around in the forest; he's really one of the Sindar (Gray Elves).
  8. I love the idea of Orlando as Thranduil. Makeup and age could give him a more mature look than his son Legolas. In the meantime, Bloom might also do a cameo in the background of Legolas for simple continuity without disturbing Tolkein's vision. This would speak to the essence of Elf immortality.
  9. I CALL FOR A BOYCOTT OF THE HOBBIT UNLESS PETER JACKSON DIRECTS- NEW LINE ARE A BUNCH OF TOSSERS WHO SHOULD PULL THEIR HEADS OUT OF THEIR ARSES AND PAY HIM WHAT HE'S OWED. ANY OTHER DIRECTOR WOULD JUST ~??@ UP WHAT PJ STARTED.
  10. i don't think Orli should play Thranduil, but i think he should still be in The Hobbit, along with Hugo Weaving as Elrond, Ian Mckellen, Andy Serkis, you could prolly even have Cate Blanchet come back, since there are parts in The Hobbit when Gandalf disappears and this is actually when he and Galadriel and Celeborn etc. are driving Suaron out of Dol Guldor for the time being. that would be a cool scene. anyways, the big point is that Peter Jackson is the only one who can and should direct The Hobbit. New Line is being ridiculous!!!
  11. Orlando should appear as Legolas in a Jackson-directed Hobbit. Remember, the original plan as we heard it last fall was to produce TWO films: The Hobbit and a link between that and LotR. That would provide Jackson and company with opportunities to bring back lots of the LotR cast.
    And that's what we want!
  12. Not only possible...necessary. Part of the deal...gotta have the Mirkwood "strain" as Viggo would say.
  13. Boycotting Hobitt....a lot of talk going around about boycotting a Jacksonless Hobitt, but you have to realize that plan wouldn't work. NL believes the Hobitt will rake it in no matter who helms it....we INSTEAD should boycott New Line itself and do it NOW! We should loudly boycott New Line films in the theater and on DVD...I for one won't see another NL film...not one until PJ has been announced as director of the Hobitt.
  14. Orlando and the rest of the LotR cast should definitely be in 'The Hobbit' but I certainly won't be watching it if it's not a PJ production. He's the only director who can actually portray the spirit of Middle Earth.
  15. Certainly would be interesting how they would get him in there. But we know the elves are such a party hearty group in The Hobbit! Will we finally see Legolas drunk? Only time will tell us what is going on and who is in the movie. Waiting is not going to be easy!PJ we need you!
  16. "And Terry O'Quinn should be cast as Thranduil"
make me gag that guy is old and so not an elf; maybe as Bard the dragon slayer but not an elf. not to rag on Hugo because he got elronds carachter right but he was a bit old to look the part.maybe Joaquin phoenix as thranduil. but it is great that the cast of LOTR are sticking up for Peter
  17. David Bowie as Thranduil. Name me someone else who doesn't look more naturally elfin than ZiggyS. About the right age too.
    That is all.
  18. Legolas in "The Hobbit" would be a great idea. Peter Jackson is the only one to direct this movie. I wouldn't bother going to watch the movie if directed by someone else.
  19. I will go out of my way to boycott the Hobbit movie if Peter Jackson doesn't direct it.

New Line I think will loose money on it as nobody I know is interested unless PJ directs.
  20. Bloom most definitely must be in The Hobbit--but. under the great Peter Jackson's direction. Love the idea of Bloom as BOTH Thranduil and Legolas. This should provide the screenplay writer(s) with an opportunity to flesh out Legolas' back story.
  21. All this talk of banning PJ is rubbish.

Why couldn't another director do just as good a job? I seem to remember everyone berating PJ prior to the movie being made indicating he was only good for splatter movies.

I for one doing give a monkeys who directs it provided the film remains true to it's roots and is casted well!

Plenty of good directors out there and some not so well known that can do the job just as well if not better than PJ.
  22. I'd like to see Peter Jackson direct The Hobbit, of course. But there are several other directors who'd do an excellent job of adapting it, too. No matter who directs, I'm planning to see it -- if only to complain about how bad it was!

As for Legolas appearing in The Hobbit, a cameo would be appropriate, but that's about it. The story isn't about him.
  23. Peter needs to direct it. I know others could do a great job, but realize this. Everything would lok different. No WETA, different costumes, diff backround photography. Would a new director borrow the stills, images, costumes, etc from LOTR? Juust keep in mind so many things will look different, and Middle Earth as we know it, was created by PJ. Hobbits may be taller, shorter hair, etc. So many little things will be missed and seen as an entirely different plant, depending on who does the special effects and art work.
  24. I mean comeon.... What would hobbiton lok like, or the dwarves, there is only about 60 years difference between the Hobbit and LOTR, its not like they are two different worlds. the need to look the same! pardon my typo's
  25. I think Peter Jackson should definatly direct it. He made the 3 installments of Lord of the Rings, it would only make sense. As for Legolas being in The Hobbit, I's say he should be in it. Perhaps not a big part though, to keep in accuracy. I think there should be a glimpse of Arwen too. Her father's in it, so why not?
  26. Peter jackson for the Hobbit .................
I wanna see the hobbit movie so bad but . I will NEVER bother watching the Hobbit if directed by someone else.
  27. I'm on board with the folks suggesting Orli play Thranduil. But of course I won't be seeing any Hobbit movie without PJ!! I am already boycotting New Line Movies & DVDs until they come to their senses!!
  28. Legolas in "The Hobbit"? Perhaps a cameo, no more; that would be a perfectly Peter Jackson sort of thing to do. And I agree with the previous comment about David Bowie playing Thranduil. He just might be perfect!

But as to "The Hobbit" film's future: not without PJ! New Line doesn't get another penny of my money, either, until and unless they cease this foolish politic-ing and make up with Peter so he can give us "The Hobbit" the fans deserve, expect and demand.

    Over 60000 fans agree.
    http://www.petitiononline.com/hobfilm/petition.html
  29. For what its worth...I WILL NOT even acknowledge The Hobbit movie if Peter Jackson does not direct the movie...PERIOD!!!
  30. A Legolas cameo id a brilliant notion; but only a cameo please no major rewrites allowed.

As for a PJ ONLY Hobbit, well, I am in favour. However, no one seems to remember that without New Line we would never have had the LOTR trilogy. Instead we would have had a shoddy one film Miramar production with no PJ and probably no Weta and certainly no real appreciation of JRR. So maybe PJ needs to also get over all the political/legal mumbo-jumbo and make nice. Hey, I'm all for someone getting what is owed to them, but enough is enough. Between New Line and PJ et al, we fans have spent BILLIONS of dollars.

I think both New Line and PJ owe the fans an apology and a Hobbit movie. That said, there are other great directors, other fabulous writers and Weta's Richard Taylor has already gone on record as saying Weta is willing to be involved with or without PJ. New Zealand, of course IS Middle Earth and is the ONLY place a Hobbit move should be made.

As far as I'm concerned the real MUST have actors are Andy Serkis; he IS Gollum and Ian McKellan, without them any movie of the Hobbit would be hard to take.
  31. If the Hobbit happens, which I hope it does I hope New Line see sense and allow the movie to be made by Peter Jackson. It's what the majority of fans want and it also allows continuity fo the style of the LOTR trilogy of movies. Did anyone conside geting someone else other than George Lucas to direct Star Wars? If there had ever been any talkof that years ago people would have been in uproar. Get the differences sorted and get PJ in!!!!!
  32. While PJ did write the script for the amazing screen version of the LOTR trilogy, along with Fran Walsh & Philipa Boyens, as we all know JRR Tolkien wrote the books.

George Lucas WROTE the Star Wars stories as well as directing (and controlling all the rights to the characters etc). Now do we see a difference? Apples & oranges my dear.

I agree that PJ would be best, but at this point I'm rapidly approaching the point where the whole project is leaving a sour taste. I think I rather not see the Hobbit made at all (with or without a nice Orli cameo) than see it degenerate into such a negative experience.

Don't know about you, but I think I'll spend the rest of this lovely Canadian holiday weekend in some nice Hobbity experience like planting a garden. Or maybe I'll watch the trilogy AGAIN!
  33. I think all the actors and actresses should do what ORLADO BLOOM did. Then they have to get PETER JACKASON.
  34. Uhm.

    No.

    God, I hope not.
Then that would be entirely obvious that they're just trying to cash in on Orlando's Fangirl Following.

Maybe, if anything, a very tiny Cameo apperance?
Nothing major, please. Nothing that'll change the plot too much, as I know Jackson likes to do.

Don't get me wrong, I love Orlando, but I love Tolkien more.

I'm totally all about David Bowie for Thanduil, though. Haha~

Also, No one should Tackle the Hobbit except for Jackson.
  35. At the rate that the production of "The Hobbit" movie is moving, Orlando will be about the right age to play Thranduil. Even if the movie occurs in the relatively near future, I am a strong proponent of Orlando playing his father (there is such a thing as makeup) and Stellan Skaarsgard as Thorin.
HOWEVER, if P. J. doesn't do the movie, I will certainly skip it.
  36. Of course Legolas can and should be in The Hobbit. He's the king's son, for goodness sake. Wouldn't he be around when Thranduil deals with a large party of captured dwarves? Not to mention commanding troups in the battle of five armies. They would have to come up with a pretty good reason for him NOT to be there.

Sean Astin playing the Gaffer(in a cameo) would be fun, although by the time the film gets made he might be too young. Hamfast was just a kid when Bilbo returned from his journey. No Drogo cameo, please!

I think Orli is too young yet to play Thranduil. That part will require an actor with some real presence. (No offence, I love O.B.)

I'm all for PJ directing, the story is more his speed, and he won't have to deminish the characters as much to bring them down to his level. But getting the film made, and made right, is the main thing. Of course, Ian Mckellen MUST play Gandalf. And if he won't do it with any other director, then let's just get on with it. Enough politics, already.

However, just a thought, but if George Lucas hadn't been so involved in the last three "Star Wars" films, perhaps they wouldn't have been such self-indulgent embarasments.
  37. Correction, I ment Sean Astin might be to old to play the gaffer. sorry!
  38. No, I don't think Legolas should be in the movie. I am a huge Orlando Bloom fan, but when Tolkien wrote the Hobbit he obviously didn't think it was necessary to put Legolas in the book so why should Peter Jackson? I think we should make The Hobbit exactly like the book and unfortunatly in the book there is no Legolas.
  39. No, I think the movie must stay true to the book. Legolas was not in the book. Without Peter Jackson, the Hobbit may become a thrown together hodge podge film to capitolize on the trilogy fame and fortune. I really hope that whoever writes the screen play does it as well as PJ and Fran could.
  40. Peter Jackson seems to understand Tolkien's vision of Middle Earth. I wouldn't trust the fandom in the hands of any other director.

That being said, I'd still rather stick a fork in my eyes than see Orlando in some uncanon Legolas!subplot.
  41. OH!

Whoever said Bowie should play Thranduil pretty much wins at life.
  42. Agree that 1)PJ only should do the movie. Continuity should be maintained wrt Middle-Earth (WETA,NZ,costumes,Ian Mckellen,Andy Serkis,Howard Shore's music)2)Legolas in a cameo only. It's clear Gimli & he remembered the 'Mirkwood' days at the Council of Elrond! 3)I vote James Marsters for Thranduil. Can't beat his cheekbones. He can do the English accent, looks good as a blond...and has the required blue eyes!!
  43. I hope they stay true to the book and if Orlando is in the movie (no complaints from me if he his) he could play another related elf character.

I am worried that they would try to make this a reunion show and bring in the entire old cast(rumor: that Arwen could be written in), litter the movie with subplots and reduce this fantastic tale to a marketing vehicle for all those involved.
  44. I really think that if PJ were to do the film, and Im nearly sure he will when all this is finally said and done, the whole concept of two films should be pursued. First one being the true adaption of the Hobbit and the Second being the linking factor to LOTR, ala White Council plot at Dol Guldur etc. You really HAVE to have Serkis for Gollum and McKellan for Gandalf. But honestly I wouldn't mind seeing Bowie for Thranduil, nor would I really mind Legolas making a cameo in both Mirkwood and the Battle of Five Armies; he was after all a character created after the Hobbit was written. Im sure big guy Tolkien wouldn't mind much, he did that plenty himself in others of his stories. And He talked a lot about redoing the Hobbit after LOTR anyway. It wouldn't honestly be practical to have any of the four fellowship hobbits to return, maybe Gimli, though a very small role like Legolas. The Arwen cameo I could deal with too, if small, and Ian Holms and Hugo Weaving are also important for the Hobbit / White Council movies; mainly Weaving for Elrond. But hey, none of this wishful thinking does much if these guys can't come to some agreement. However it goes Shaye needs to either do something or nothing, and quick or not at all.
  45. Anyone except PJ would be a disaster. PJs vision created the LOTR movie experiece. And i cannot remember when I enjoyed movies like that before.

The Hobbit must be from the same Universe as LOTR and that is the vison of PJ and his team. Anything else will suck. Just imagine the Hobbit with another Gandalf and different looking hobbiton, bree, rivendell, ouch can't hardly withstand the thought of it.
  46. I think Orlando Bloom should be in it, It wouldn't be the same without him.
  47. I don't think any one else apart from peter jackson should direct the hobbit film, it would not be the same and Orlando Bloom should be in the film it wouldn't be the same without the blonde wig! HE IS HOT!!!!!!!
  48. Peter Jackson Esq,
Has to do the Hobbit and to include his cast of magical actors to create middle earth in N Z as he did in the LOFR.If Tolkien was here in body he would have approved the end result of the trilogy.Whoever PJ casts will win my vote anyway as his taste in selecting actors for certain roles has been proven beyound doubt his masterfullness in choice.Arise Sir Peter !!! Ciao For Now xxx.
  49. There is no way that anyone other than Peter Jackson should be considered to do "the Hobbit." While there are other directors who may be very talented, their version would not line up with what Peter has already brilliantly established.
  50. And if instead of playing of Legolas, Orlando plays of king Thransduil?
